Is it a privacy law or is it out of respect to the family at this time?

I do think eventually we will know more if anyone cares to get the reports. This case will not have a publication ban since there will be no trial now. I know that when the Crown decided not to charge Pickton with more murders and stayed the charges, it gave the green light to release information, like his interviews.

The family was never asked what they want, IMO, because the family would want to know the cause of LD's death. Families do want and need this information. It would be very sad if they have to hire a lawyer to get this most basic information. I hope the authorities can extend basic rights and compassion to LD's family, as they seem to have done with the Fowlers. Two standards emerging here? Why?

I guess, but given that his friends/family said that he had an interest in Russia and Communism (to an extent that some found baffling), and that he also had a big interest in history and politics, it seems like it was probably based on more information than that. Plus it does still seem like a totally random thing to know about in general. JMO.
It's reasonable to think that some reports are exaggerated, not necessarily purposely to mislead, but because of interpretation, imprecise language etc...

In my experience, LE and first-responders are not always exactly honest with you about a violent death. I had an uncle killed in a really bad head-on collision. They lied and told us he died instantly. I think they were trying to be kind. I also wonder if the cousin hasn't been told anything because the widow was since she would be the rightful next of kin and she doesn't want to disclose what was said. If so, I can't blame her. That is her right.

I don't know if that's true, that they don't know how he was murdered. In an interview, his cousin said:

“We haven’t heard anything from the police… The way that he died — violently and murdered in cold blood — makes it very difficult to process any thoughts at this moment,” Friesen said.

He did say this though too...

He said there is some relief but there are still many unanswered questions. As for a motive, police have not shared any details with the family about why Dyck was killed.

Family of B.C. murder victim remembers Leonard Dyck as ‘gentle soul,’ family man

We all know it was treated as second-degree murder; violence implicit.

Privacy law in this case would be to protect LD's family and to only release the cause of death to them.

It is NOT to protect BS and KM and their families.

There is no double standard. Every family will get the cause of death of their loved ones. The only difference may be is that CD and LF's families have shared more with the public, by choice.

Yes i agree. People are misinterpreting that quote. You have to read it with the correct punctuation. They know how he died. They don’t know anything else. The way he died is making it difficult for them to process it all.

"that is the Canadian way". Maybe being the Canadian way is a good thing, so we don't end up hearing and reading a bunch of fake news.

If RCMP do not provide details and information it will only encourage more fake news, conspiracy theories and rumours.

sandbar:

"The question is: did Picton's victims families have any say in whether that info was released? I don't know..."

But look at who the victims were, KWIM?

I can say they did not... but you will have to take my word for it

OK, thanks for that explanation. I'm wondering why family members would choose to refuse to release the COD in a case like this. I mean, for me at least, it makes me wonder why? What was he doing at the time of his death? Are there embarrassing details they don't want getting out? (Just sharing where MY mind goes when I hear that....I have no reason to think that in this case).
My mind went to not what he was doing but what was done to him. He may have had some really gruesome injuries and they prefer he not be remembered that way because that is what the public would remember since they didn't know him.

Because the RCMP are incompetent.
Why do you think they are incompetent?
If RCMP do not provide details and information it will only encourage more fake news, conspiracy theories and rumours.
Yes, but it's what you choose to believe. Better to wait than rush to judgement.

Would it be the police who provide this info though? Isn't this up to a coroner? The RCMP were involved in Ben Kilmer's disappearance here on Vancouver Island but the coroner released the cause of death: 'Public interest' prompts B.C. coroner to release details in death of Ben Kilmer.

Also, I am not aware of a "publication ban", which is a very specific thing, invoked for very specific reasons. This is not that.

Some of what we don't know is policing best practices of preserving the integrity of the investigation. Some of it is people putting out information without checking the dates of info they are using to support their positions.

The investigation continues, things change, dates and times are important...

Right, I don't think this will be covered under a publication ban now that they are dead. There is no possibility of a trial.

Agreed! The case garnered international attention--and included nationals of 2 other countries--and there are already all manner of conspiracy theories popping up here about the 2 being framed. I think at some point after they conclude the investigation, RCMP will release more information if only to shut down that speculation. I don't think they will ever release a doc dump as commonly happens in American murders, but I do think they will at least provide some general info on the substantial evidence, whether it is DNA, fingerprints, etc.

I’m not sure how many here are familiar with the Millard/Smich crimes here in Canada, but they are another duo that I have thought about frequently in the context of this case. Smich, like Bryer, was the initially obvious problem child. Millard came from wealth and privilege and superficially had a much more normal profile. But in the end Millard was the covert engine of all of it. The prime mover of all the evil they did. I’ve wondered if Kam just flew under the radar with a better mask.
oh yeah, interesting comparison. There are a few similarities for sure.

I think we're going to hear frustratingly little further information about anything that matters. It seems that is the Canadian way. What was the boys' cause of death? What specifically linked the murders to each other? What specifically linked the suspects to the murders? What do we believe motivated them? Was it all pre-meditated, spontaneous, or just "bad luck/panic"? (I don't believe the latter, AT ALL, btw) Will we ever hear more about Kam from his family?

It would be nice if RCMP would give us some answers, but based on them not revealing the cause of LD's death, I'm not hopeful at all.
It will all come out in the end but LE has a responsibility to BS, KM and their families too. They can't make allegations against the two without having rock solid evidence. They need to complete their investigation.

I was poking around BS's Steam account last night. Had looked before but never checked out his screenshots. I never did screenshots for any of my Steam games, so I can't figure out if they show the oldest first or the most recent, but the first one is a screenshot of a game involving players on a boat headed for forested land (in winter).

It could be coincidence,

Steam Community :: Bryer

Now...I call you a TRUE WebSleuth! Nicely done!

Those victims still had families, KWIM?

I respect the victims and their families. I am not sure that they were respected in that case, though, thus the M-inquiry that went on for years.
