Thank you Snoopster!!!!! Thank you! A while back when I tried to read the threads so I would know what the case was about, it seemed I started in the middle of a discussion about dances and balls and I just could never figure out what the heck was going on. As a mod in this forum, I like to have some idea what the cases are about.

Your synopsis was very good and now I think I even understand why there was discussion of all those fabulous sounding parties/dances.

:) Thanks!

Salem

There is also the question of recent sex scandals in the Canadian military, one involving another senior officer on active duty in Afghanistan. Another involves a signal operator accused of several counts of sexual assault in and near CFB Petawawa. This individual was arrested shortly before he was due to depart for Afghanistan. Military flights to Afghanistan depart from CFB Trenton, where RW was in command.

I should not omit the mysterious case of Joe Grozelle, who died under very mysterious circumstances at RMC Kingston when RW was a student there. The military has been less than forthcoming about that case. This leads us to the mysterious death in closed quarters in Afghanistan of a female military intelligence officer, whose husband was a soccer coach at RMC Kingston when Joe Grozelle died. JG's girlfriend was a star soccer player. And did I mention that the military seems to have backtracked from information initially posted on the DND website stating that RW was a student at RMC Kingston during the time period in question?

There are people who have disappeared around the same time as JL, in the same general area, and later showed up dead. There is the death of a scientist who worked at that nuclear facility where RW's family lived while he was a child. CFB Petawawa is nearby, and the town is upriver from Ottawa. Troops were prepare to ship out to Afghanistan at the time.

And perhaps what some consider the most sensational question of all: did RW know serial killer Paul Bernardo, whose heinous crimes (involving his ex-wife) still raise hackles in Canada. Snoopster mentioned this. That case is highly evocative, two decades on.

The questions surrrounding RW overlap in many threads here at WS. Etc.

Salem, I think Summersolstice's additional colour shows how difficult it can be for someone just jumping into the middle of the discussion. There are so many potential off-shoots to this case! But then, that's why this case will likely keep percolating on the WS forums.

The missing (now confirmed dead) nuclear scientist that SS referred to in the above post is Lachlan Cranswick, for whom there is a major thread going on WS over in the "Missing" forums. If you think this thread is complicated...don't even think of jumping into the middle of that one!

(Thanks for the added detail, Summer!)

Aw, shucks, I just scraped the surface, and even forgot to mention this going on during RW's days at UCC, the once-exclusive private school for Canada's upper crust:

Thank you both very much! I have seen Cranswick's thread and you are right - I have no idea what is going on there either

Sometimes it is hard to keep up on threads when there is so much discussion when I haven't been in on the discussion at the very beginning.

Again - thank you both!!

Excellent summary Snoopster and Summer!

This following article (rumour) is not about RW, but he is mentioned there:

Now that you've opened that door, let's go back to the early days of the JL investigation:

isn't tomorrow the day he returns to court?

Well today is the start of the "pretrial hearing". Wonder what's going to happen.

Today is the day he returns for what has been called the "pretrial hearing". I'm not holding my breath. I am sure they can find some reason to put it off. I hope it goes forward, since finding a loop hole would likely make him feel like he's still in control. Purely my opinion:).

Williams waives right to prelim -- FINAL

Col. Russell Williams elected to waive a preliminary court and go to the Superior Court. He will be in assignment court on Oct 7.

Williams, 47, appeared in a Belleville courthouse Thursday via video for what was supposed to be a pre-trial hearing. Instead Williams will be making his October appearance at the Belleville superior court.

Colonel committed to trial on murder charges

On Thursday the former commander of CFB Trenton waived his right to a preliminary hearing, which is held to determine whether there's enough evidence to move forward to trial.

His next appearance is set for Oct. 7 in Ontario Superior Court.
Williams appeared Thursday via video from the detention centre where he's being held. He squinted at the camera and all he said was, "I can, thank you," when the judge asked if Williams could hear him.
The Crown made some minor amendments to six charges, including changing one count from attempted break and enter to break and enter.

Comeau was found dead in her home in Brighton, Ont., last November. She was a flight attendant at CFB Trenton and served aboard the same military VIP flights Williams piloted for much of the 1990s, ferrying the Governor General, the prime minister and other dignitaries on domestic and overseas trips.

Court documents show Williams is alleged to have burglarized Comeau's home some 10 days before she was found dead on Nov. 25. The information does not specify what was allegedly stolen.

It's alleged Williams burglarized the Tweed home of the first alleged sexual assault victim twice after the Sept. 17 assault. The court documents also show police believe he robbed the home of his second alleged assault victim twice before the Sept. 30 attack in the woman's home.

I'm not surprised that he waived his right to a prelim, I'm sure there is enough evidence to proceed to trial, even without the fact that it is rumoured he confessed to the crimes (not sure if it was ever verified that he did confess).

not a peep anywhere...what's up with that? did the papers forget so soon?

oh oh spoke too soon.. here is the latest news..going to trial in Oct. hope he doesn't get brownie points for this.

Not to worry Macright, he won't get brownie points for waiving his right to a prelim. There really is no point in the prelim, especially if he confessed as reported. He won't be going to trial in October, it will just be another court appearance. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if we don't see a trial at all in the case and he just pleads guilty to the charges, which could be another reason why he waived his right to a prelim.
