AMC reports coming home to find her bedside table and underwear drawers had been emptied, and a chilling message left on her computer screen: "Go ahead, call the police. I want to show the judge you're (sic) really big dildos." AMC calls the Belleville police.

It is quite stunning to see it laid out like that.

How could it be possible for someone to suddenly start this pattern of behavior in 2007 if that person had not committed previous offences? From everything I have read about serial offenders, that is not typical. It is my understanding that the pace of such offences increases over time. One simply does not commit offences at the pace alleged above without previous experience in such matters.

This makes me wonder how long this has gone on, in order to build up to this level of activity.

I can see now why that poor woman in the documentary was so shaken. The same day as a break-in at MFC's? Both of them French-speaking? Too much of a coincidence.

The brother of Williams’ former stepfather, Stan Sovka, and his wife Madeline were stunned to learn of the charges.

“That’s not the guy we know,” Madeline Sovka said from Calgary.

“We knew a very nice man, a nice boy growing up, no problem, very gentle.”



Madeline sounds like a French name to me, did R.W. get along with his "Aunt Madeline'?

Also,were the other units called in for investigation of the break and enter or something more...?

Insp. Al Tario is in charge of major case and inspections. He will head a small team of officers selected from the various units. Different units are involved because there could be more than just homicides and sexual assaults.

OTTAWA — Accused killer Russell Williams is back in Ottawa for the first time since his arrest in the murders of two women.

Williams, who has remained segregated from the general inmate population at the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee since shortly after his Feb. 7 arrest, is in Ottawa this week for a barrage of mental health evaluations, according to sources.

"He's been very quiet the whole time," said the source.

The former CFB Trenton base commander is being held in segregation at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre throughout his stay in the city where he once lived with his wife Mary-Elizabeth Harriman, 52. Williams is scheduled to return to Napanee ahead of his court appearance next week.

Williams is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Cpl. Marie- France Comeau, 38, of Brighton, and Jessica Lloyd, 27, of Belleville.

He is also charged with two counts each of forcible confinement and break and enter, and sexual assault stemming from two attacks on Tweed women last September. In addition, he faces 82 charges related to break-ins in the Ottawa and Quinte areas.


Williams' lawyer, Michael Edelson, could not be reached for comment Thursday. A member of his legal team said Edelson would be out of the country until Thanksgiving weekend.

Set to appear in court Oct. 7 after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing, Williams and his wife are also fighting $2.45-million civil suit by a Hastings County woman under the name Jane Doe, who alleges Williams attacked her Sept. 17, 2009.

RW is considered sane until and unless he is proven otherwise (unlike the presumption of innocence). I think a mental disorder defence would be a tough row to hoe for RW, given his position and capacity to function at such a high level.

A major legal precedent in mental disorder defence cases is that of Regina v. Chaulk:

On September 3, 1985, 15 year-old Robert Chaulk and 16 year-old Francis Morrissette burglarized a home in Winnipeg, and then stabbed and bludgeoned its sole occupant to death. A week later they turned themselves in, making full confessions.

The only defence raised was insanity within the meaning of section 16 of the Criminal Code of Canada. Expert evidence was given at trial that Chaulk and Morrissette suffered from a paranoid psychosis which made them believe that they had the power to rule the world and that the killing was a necessary means to that end. They believed that they were above the ordinary law and thought they had a right to kill the victim because he was "a loser".

They were both convicted of murder by a jury in the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench, which was upheld on appeal.

The major questions to the Supreme Court of Canada were:

1.whether s. 16(4) of the Criminal Code, which provides that "Every one shall, until the contrary is proved, be presumed to be and to have been sane", infringes the presumption of innocence guaranteed in s. 11(d) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and if so, it is justifiable under s. 1 of the Charter;
2.whether the meaning of the word "wrong" in s. 16(2) of the Code should be restricted to "legally wrong";
3.whether s. 16(3) of the Code provides an alternative defence if the conditions of s. 16(2) were not met; and
4.whether the trial judge erred in permitting the Crown to split its case by presenting its evidence with respect to the sanity of the accused in rebuttal.

Must clarify that the bolded reference is the headline from this story:

It was printed back in February, a few days after RW's arrest. Further down in the same article, it states:

"At this point there is no suggestion of any criminal connection between Bernardo and Williams ..."

To the best of my knowledge, this "relationship" has not been mentioned again. Not one person has come forward to the press since February to confirm that the two men had even met, much less were "pals".

I consider this premature, misleading headline to be sleazy journalism at its finest. If it is ever proven that PB and RW were friends, I'll gladly eat some crow.

The insanity defense is based on evaluations by forensic professionals that the defendant was incapable of distinguishing between right and wrong at the time of the offense

There is a different angle to the insanity plea, which of course has a different name nowadays of "not criminally responsible": that is, post-traumatic stress caused by combat. Surely expensive lawyers will explore this angle. However, it seems highly unlikely IMO that such a claim would be accepted, given the many, many public statements by those who knew him that they had absolutely no idea that anything was wrong. Not one person so far has said that they had a clue. It seem further unlikely given that RW did not ever take part in combat, as far as we know.

SS: That is exactly what I was going to do, merge the lists, to get a visual of his crimes chronologically. The pattern IS indeed intense. He lived and worked to commit his offences.

Did he seize all break, enters, and attempts to commit indictable offences AFTER Marie's murder? Or are we only seeing a list that LE has selected to charge him with at this time?

Not only were they able to gain access to the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, but to inmates, and they were only stopped when they found their way to the nursing station inside.

They then wandered around and worked their way up to the nursing station when staff finally spotted them.

"Two people made it into a part of the facility with no security check -- an area amid terrorists and first-degree murderers that they would never in a hundred years be allowed into without a security check," said another source with intimate knowledge of the incident.

"OTTAWA — Accused killer Russell Williams is back in Ottawa for the first time since his arrest in the murders of two women.

Williams, who has remained segregated from the general inmate population at the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee since shortly after his Feb. 7 arrest, is in Ottawa this week for a barrage of mental health evaluations, according to sources.

"He's been very quiet the whole time," said the source.

The former CFB Trenton base commander is being held in segregation at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre throughout his stay in the city where he once lived with his wife Mary-Elizabeth Harriman, 52. Williams is scheduled to return to Napanee ahead of his court appearance next week.

Williams is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Cpl. Marie- France Comeau, 38, of Brighton, and Jessica Lloyd, 27, of Belleville.

He is also charged with two counts each of forcible confinement and break and enter, and sexual assault stemming from two attacks on Tweed women last September. In addition, he faces 82 charges related to break-ins in the Ottawa and Quinte areas.

Williams' lawyer, Michael Edelson, could not be reached for comment Thursday. A member of his legal team said Edelson would be out of the country until Thanksgiving weekend.

Set to appear in court Oct. 7 after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing, Williams and his wife are also fighting $2.45-million civil suit by a Hastings County woman under the name Jane Doe, who alleges Williams attacked her Sept. 17, 2009."

Too bad the Belleville Intelligencer site has crashed, because I really wanted to see their version in today's online edition from six hours ago. How much spin has been put on the security breach? I imagine security will be a very special operation from now on.

I take it all prisoners have been accounted for? With RW due in court, security will no doubt be a challenge now.

Wonder why I can't find anything about the security breach in the Ottawa Citizen, and the Sun has buried it?

RW is considered sane until and unless he is proven otherwise (unlike the presumption of innocence). I think a mental disorder defence would be a tough row to hoe for RW, given his position and capacity to function at such a high level.
