Crown: one "very disturbing event in 2009 represented a serious escalation in his behaviour...." cont'd

Crown has noted prosectors have taken great care in selecting what evidence to discuss/show but that some must be shown (cont'd)
Our view in other courtroom is limited but Williams appears to have his face lowered, resting his arms on his knees, not moving.

Jill Mahoney - This is a statement just issued by General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff, on Col. Williams's guilty plea:

"The tragic events surrounding Colonel Russell Williams stunned all Canadians and none more so than the members of the Canadian Forces. Today's guilty plea is the first step in a healing process that will no doubt take many years.

"Upon formal conviction we will be in a position to officially begin the administrative process that will lead to Colonel Williams' release from the Canadian Forces. This will be completed as quickly as possible.

"While we are confident that justice is prevailing, we recognize that this will not diminish the pain and anguish suffered by the families, friends, and communities so directly affected by these tragic events.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to those affected, and I reaffirm my commitment to promoting the well-being of the men and women and families of the Canadian Forces."

TorontoStar:
Dan Robson reports:
Some people passing the courthouse stopped in curiousity.

Two teenge girls left without going into the courtroom annex, after learning that it was the hearing for Col. Russell Williams.

Some who who did go in quickly left.

"Christ, I need a drink," said a young man leaving the annex after 20 minutes. "Where is the closest bar?"

Inside, he had watched photos flashed onto a screen that had been taken by Williams as he meticulously documented himself breaking into the bedrooms rooms of young girls and masturbating while wearing their underwear.

"Merci beaucoup (name of victim)," Williams captioned one of the photos.
In one photo there were toys on the bed, with underwear displayed on the bed cover.

"This is pathetic," said a grey-haired woman as she walking out with another woman.

Dan Robson reports:
At lunch Jessica Lloyd's brother, Andy, stood outside the courtroom. He said he didn't want to speak to the media until the end of the day.
Reporters and photographers repectfully stood by, snapping photos as he smoked four cigarettes in 15 minutes, then walked back into the courthouse

I don't know how he is going to endure listening once they start talking about his sister.

While Andy Lloyd has been calm in his interviews thus far, I would be very, very suprised if there were not some sort of outburst from either of the murder victim's families. How could you listen to that horror about your loved one? :(

Afternoon plans:

This afternoon's schedule is uncertain, given the pace of going through the massive amount of Williams' "trophy collection," as Assistant Crown Attorney Robert Morrison calls the huge cache of photos of mementos.
He gathered so many garments, that on at least two occasions he visited a field outside Ottawa to burn them and start again.
We might not get through the long list of B-and-Es before court time expires for today.
We were expecting to hear from the first Crown witness, OPP Sergeant Jim Smith, of the force's behavioural science section, who interviewed Williams in February when he became a suspect in the disappearance of Jessica Lloyd.
It must have been a dramatic session, during which Williams went from being a proud military man to admitting he was a freakish, deviant serial predator.
We already have been told that police, and in fact the burglary victims, were oblivious to most of his break-ins.
His admissions sent investigators to dozens of homes to interview unknowing victims.
Learning of what happened in their homes -- the masturbation, the fouling of undergarments, the invasion of privacy -- must have been an immense shock.
We're about to get underway.

BBM: Anyone here that was/is following the case of 8 year old Victoria Stafford's abduction and murder might recall that this is the same Detective who recovered her remains when he was out searching one day, using a geographical profile given by one of the accused.

The man is a genius, to me. He discovers Victoria and then gets a confession out of one of Canada's most heinous criminals.

TorontoStar: Jim Rankin reports:

The crown this morning confirmed in court that both murder victims, Comeau and Lloyd, were videotaped by Williams.
Comeau's actual murder is on tape.
What isn't clear is how the court will handle this.
In the case of schoolgirl killer Paul Bernardo, who was convicted in 1995, Justice Patrick LeSage ruled videotaped evidence of teen victims being attacked and tortured would be heard by the public, but not seen. They were later destroyed, and transcripts of the tapes kept in the file.

Greg McArthur - He was both sloppy and careful at the same time: during one break-in, he wore a rubber glove when he took a series of photos of himself holding a young girl's family photo album. On the next break-in a couple days later, he left a muddy boot track.

Greg McArthur - Whenever one of his break-ins resulted in the Ottawa police releasing a warning, or a news clipping from local media, he would keep a copy of it on his computer. Makes me wonder: what does he think of all the news coverage now? Was he fond of the news coverage only when he thought he was fooling everyone?
