About the victim surcharge: it is $100 per count, so that means RW will owe $8,800 to a fund for victims of crime.

This is a pathetic amount.

10:46 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: "Marie france did not have to die. Jessica did not have to die. There is no surprise to anyone here or anywhere about what penalty must be imposed for this crime. Sec. 235 mandates convictions for first-degree murder is life imprisonment," he says. He mentions in this couuntry we don't have capital punishment and says there are good reasons for that. "There exist very few mitigating circumstances in this case. One is the plea of guilty - which saved the community from lengthy emotional trial ... Although not insane, it appears Mr. Williams was and is a very sick individual, but a very dangerous man nonetheless," he says. He says words such as pedophilic, stark, horror, emotionless, serial killer, are in the forefront when thinking of words to describe him. The judge orders him to stand.

10:48 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt: Count 1: Life imprisonment for the murder of Marie-France Comeau. Count 2: Life imprisonment for the murder of Jessica Lloyd. On counts 1-73, counts 75-78m , 81-86 - the property offences - sentenced to one year on each count

I am wondering whether Det. Symth interviewed either of the accused in the Tori Stafford case - does anyone happen to know?

I'm also wondering whether at some point, the Crown might elect to show the interrogation and ultimate confession tapes they have from the female perp in that matter?

I realize these are two entirely different cases, but my understanding is that Det. Symth is the officer who located the body of little Tori Stafford -- this officer sure has had a rough go -- Finding the child's lifeless body (in heaven knows what condition!), and hearing the confession of RW --

Thank you Officer Symth -- your work, though we wish it were not necessary, is entirely and wholeheartedly appreciated!!

10:49 smithjoanna: "I guess there are tabloids and there are serious and professional news gatherers...that will always be the case," says judge.

10:50 smithjoanna: Judge made that remark after saying he saw victims and families being chased through parking lots.

10:50 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: On counts 73-73, count 79-80, the sex assault and confinement, he says "you are sentenced to 10 years on each account. With your waiver, your commital warrant will instruct the police to deliver you directly to the kingston penitentiary today." Williams will also have a lifetime weapons prohibition and be registered for life as a sex offender. There will be a DNA data-banking order and a $100 vicitm surcharge for each, totalling $8,800. He says unless there's a very important reason on why not, all items requested by crown will be forfeited. "Thank you, you may sit down," the judge says to Williams.

Russell Williams is about to address the court.

"I stand before you indescribably ashamed... I know that the crimes I have committed have damaged many people..."

He says he very deeply regrets what he has done, but that few will accept that.

"I have committed despicable crimes...betraying my family, my friends and colleagues and the Canadian forces... I shall spend the rest of my life regretting that I have ended two vibrant, innocent and cherished lives."
He sits down.

10:52 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: The judge says that though he is eligible for parole in 25 years, "there's no guarantee you'll be eligible at this time." The judge now addresses the courtroom. " "I see little purpose in chasing victims and their families to parking lots when they try to enter the court house," he says to the media. He also tells the Crown they did "good work." Williams has stood up. An officer handcuffs him.

10:53 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: Williams is led out of court.

10:54 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: It is the last time in a long time he will spend time outside jail walls. Chris Nicholas, the lead investigator, is hugging family members of murder victim Jessica Lloyd.

10:54 CBC: Amber Hildebrandt reports: Other family members are talking with the Crown.

Judge Scott tells the court the brutal, senseless crimes mean the colonel will be forever notorious. "He may best be described as Canada's bright shining lie...His crimes have adversely affected this country and this community...

Judge Scott voices his sympathy for all those affected.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all these victims... Marie-France did not have to die, Jessica did not have to die... May you all (bereaved) find the peace you deserve."

The judge says there are few mitigating circumstances save the fact that the guilty pleas spared the families the grief of a trial.

He says he believes the colonel's apology to be sincere, but that he remains "an emotionless serial killer".

Col. Williams has been sentenced to two concurrent life sentences. In addition he receives 10-year terms on the two sex attacks and one year apiece for the 82 break-ins, all to be served concurrently.

He is to be sent to Kingston Penitentiary to begin serving his term.

Col. Williams stands straight in the prisoner's box as the sentences are read out.

Col. Williams's two life sentences for first degree murder mean he must serve a minimum of 25 years behind bars before he has any chance of parole.

The judge praises the police investigation and asks that the media not harass the many victims.

Col. Williams is speaking to his lawyers, police hovering close by. Now he is leaving the court in handcuffs and shackles.

The judge grants the prosecutor's pre-sentencing requests.

Court has recessed.

IMO, RW is a pathological liar along with his other criminal characteristics. He doesn't mean a word of that speech probably finely crafted by his high-dollar lawyer.

Remember how he lied to Det. Smyth - cool as a cucumber- until he saw that the evidence was solid against him.

"The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it...."
