Russell Williams enters a ‘grim’ existence in Kingston Penitentiary

Defence lawyer Tony Bryant, who represented Bernardo, expects Williams will be on the same range as his old client, where the prison cells are 2.5 by 3 metres.

Bernardo’s tiny cell — his home for the past 15 years — is not much larger than a typical household washroom, equipped with a cot, desk and toilet.

Prisoners can talk to the inmate in the adjoining cell, but can’t see them at the prison, which opened in 1835.

Prisoners in the segregation unit get an hour outside their cell for exercise. For the other 23 hours a day, they are locked in their cells. They can watch television — if they buy a television. They can read and have writing materials. But there’s no access to computers or the Internet.

Prisoners cannot receive telephone calls but can make them to people on an authorized call list, if they pay for the calls.

Offenders can hug and touch approved visitors, even have conjugal visits with spouses.

During his time at the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee, Ont. since his February arrest, Williams could only speak to visitors from behind glass.

Comeau, Lloyd the real story

As horrific as was this case, Canadians should take note of the courage with which the murder victims conducted themselves even as Mr. Williams extinguished their lives.

It should be hoped that at some point Canadians will be treated to a full story of the lives of both Marie-France Comeau and Jessica Lloyd. It is, after all, their stories that are important and should be centre of attention, not the sordid deeds of the perpetrator.

It's worth remarking on the incredible courage of their families as well -- particularly Ms. Lloyd's brother and mother, who daily stood before the world's media to make sure she wouldn't become merely a bit player in Mr. Williams's trial.

Also on the hero side of the ledger should be Det. Sgt. Jim Smyth, the Ontario police officer who patiently and professionally cornered Mr. Williams, and in doing so helped an already traumatized community and victimized families from having to suffer an extended and uncertain trial.

As well, the Crown should be lauded for its decision to ensure that enough details of his crimes were put on the record that, without the need for a dangerous offender hearing, Mr. Williams never will be set free again.

If ever there was a moment for a national discussion on a return to capital punishment, this is it. We have before us a serial torturer and killer, and a nauseating superfluity of evidence attesting to his crimes, not to mention his own detailed confessions.

Williams’ crimes were born of neither passion nor insanity. On the contrary, his crimes are distinguished by the dispassion and sanity he brought to bear in committing them. Williams led a double life with chilling efficiency and organization. He was so competent at compartmentalizing his professional life and domestic life from his life of perversion that his own wife and closest associates were totally bamboozled. That takes a high order of intelligence and ruthless planning to carry on. Everything he did was premeditated.

Williams has no right to live. He should die.

You know, I am SO on the fence with the death penalty - not the fact that they may be innocent (which obviously in this case, he is not), but I think death is an easy way out.

We euthanize our beloved pets because it puts them out of their misery. Why should this evil monster be afforded the same fate?

In his case, this is just too easy. Let him sit there in that small, smelly broom closet and think about all of the freedom and respect that he DID have. Let him ponder all that he has lost. Death is just too good for him, too swift, and too easy.

Thanks for this article, Wondergirl. I agree with Barbara Kay. I believe in ending the life of those who, like RW, are guilty without a doubt - not as vengeance and not publicly for the entertainment of the masses but simply as a matter of justice in the service of absolute fairness - meted out by the state, dispassionately and humanely.

I think a gag order should be imposed on everyone involved and a publication ban put on all details of the execution. No public notification prior to the event, only a brief media release once the deed is done. I think it’s important to preserve our collective humanity by ensuring that neither the media, nor we as the public, are permitted to turn it into just the latest horror peep show.

JMO and I appreciate that others will feel differently. That's what is great about a forum like this - it allows us to consider other opinions and makes us think!

While I understand and relate to feelings of anger and a desire for him to rot away in his own personal hell for the rest of his natural life, I struggle with the idea that indulging my desire for vengeance may move me on the continuum between good and evil just that wee bit closer to the position held by RW and his ilk, who enjoy the suffering of others. I think better just to end his life and let it be over and final. Having said that, I admit that for me it is just an intellectual exercise because I do not know him, do not feel any sense of personal betrayal and I was not victimized by him, nor do I know any of his victims. I count myself fortunate that I have not had to withstand that test up to this point in my life and acknowledge that I cannot know how I would feel if I had known him and trusted him, as I believe you have, SomeGirlOnTheNet.

In the midst of the controversy surrounding former Canadian Forces Colonel Russell Williams, a dispute has sprung up between two major news outlets covering the case.

The Globe’s print coverage was limited to a cropped photo of Williams’ face on the cover, and a grouping of women’s undergarments presented as evidence in his case on an inside page.

In contrast, the Toronto Star published the revealing photos on its front page and featured them prominently on its website.

I don't feel that the Canadian Forces owe us any explaination! RW was a mastermind at hiding his double life. Absolutly NO ONE suspected anything to suggest such a 2nd life was occuring. What do you expect the Canadian Forces to do? What could they have done to detect this? No one can prevent this from happening, it has happened in the past and Im sure it will continue to happen in our future. Pyscho's are everywhere and come in every shape or form.

The Canadian Forces is not at fault just because one twisted soul was in a uniform! We could blame this on society, why did no one catch him, why were neighbours not watching out for each other, why did people not lock their doors/windows, why why why, the list could go on and on, but we get nowhere putting blame on others.
