Whatever happened to removing Russell Williams' military rank from the title of this thread? Salem had asked for 8 votes to determine that outcome and got 17 (at last count) in favour. That was six days ago. Salem: please? TIA

From another case I'm following one of the mods mentioned that a lot of them are busy with RL (Real Life), so closing threads, starting new threads, etc. have been slower, which may be the case with changing the thread title. HTH

Russell Williams’s neighbours

They fished and played cards together. In time, they would become his first victims.

by Michael Friscolanti on Friday, October 29, 2010 11:00am

As Russell Williams was settling in for the first night at his new home—a tiny, solitary cell in the depths of Kingston Penitentiary—his old home on Cosy Cove Lane was dark and empty, as it has been for months. Next door, a family still searching for answers finished their Thursday dinner. “We played cards at this table with him,” says Ron, sitting beside his wife, Monique. “We drank beer at this table with him. And if somebody asked me today: ‘Did I ever see anything?’ The answer would be ‘No, absolutely nothing.’ ”

It was Sept. 9, 2007, and while the family next door was visiting a dying relative eight hours away, Williams strolled through their open front door and headed straight for the bedroom of Ron and Monique’s 12-year-old daughter.

Williams knew the girl well. She had taught him to play cribbage, poking fun at his early mistakes. She baked cupcakes for him and his wife, Mary-Elizabeth Harriman, and delivered them to their door. In Grade 7, she even chose Williams as the topic for a school project. “I had to ask him 15 questions, and one of them was: ‘If you could do anything else with your life, what would it be?’ ” recalls the girl, now a teenager, sitting at the table with her parents. “He said, ‘I don’t think I would want to do anything else.’ ”

“He lied,” her father says.

This is too pathetic not too post.

Looking back, the neighbours can’t help but remember some of the stress Williams was under in 2007, right before the break-ins started. Curio, his beloved cat of 18 years, was sick and had to be euthanized. Williams and Harriman were so upset that they asked the vet to administer the needle inside their Ottawa home so she could die in a familiar setting. “He had tears in his eyes telling us about the death of that cat,” Ron recalls.

Williams was also suffering from a sudden bout of chronic arthritis. He was popping prescription pills, but the constant pain was so fierce at times that he worried he might have to retire from the military. “We would play cards here, and he could not sit for more than half an hour,” Ron says. “He would get up and stand behind the chair, holding the chair.” (Williams did the same thing during his videotaped confession to police, leaning against a wall for long periods of time.)

There are SO MANY details in that Macleans article, make sure you read it.

The duality of RW is absurd.

“We could not see, in any way, this man turning from the person we knew to the monster he became,” Ron adds. “He never showed that side to us, or anyone else. There is a special place in hell for people who commit such despicable and heinous crimes.”

Today’s letters: Two reasons for no death penalty

Paul Russell October 29, 2010 – 7:00 am

Among the many comments for and against imposing the death penalty on Russell Williams for one important fact has been overlooked: The death penalty makes obtaining convictions more difficult.

As a courtroom illustrator for BCTV news, I had the dubious opportunity to observe Clifford Olson in the prisoner’s box more than 25 years ago. It is mostly forgotten now, but it was Olson himself who provided the evidence that would have convicted him, if he hadn’t changed his plea at trial. Just as Russell Williams led police to the body of Jessica Lloyd, it was Olson who led police to the bodies of his young victims.

Outside the courtroom I asked the chief investigating officer on Olson’s case if he thought Olson would have confessed if he’d known he would die for it. The officer reluctantly admitted that he most likely would not.

While the DP as a deterrent has never been firmly established, at least it was always available as a bargaining tool, if necessary.

Couple of questions SomeGirl ...

Was going back over some old posts and note that on Feb 16 you confirmed pinkeyes statement that RW attended Cpl Comeau's funeral. You added the detail that he spoke at her funeral. We now know that both those "facts" are untrue.

Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community - View Single Post - Canada - Jessica Lloyd, 27, Belleville, Ontario 01/28/2010 thread #2

In November 2009, Cpl Marie-France Comeau was found murdered. Then in December, Dana Tkachenko went missing. In January Deborah Rashotte and Lachlan Cranswick disappeared and Jessica Lloyd was found murdered. Given that you joined WS 9 months earlier in May 2009, I am curious as to why you did not participate in discussions about any of the missing or murdered victims until Feb 10 2009, after Russ Williams was arrested.

Could you please explain the foregoing. Thanks !!

Hi Sillybilly

I didn't go to MFC's funeral - I didn't know her at all. At that time, I understood (though co-workers) that he DID attend her funeral. Then I had read not long ago, that he did not. I was surprised actually. That's what hearsay will get ya.. ;)

As for joining 9 months ago - I was invited by AntiqueGirl, who I met on a Facebook group for Tori Stafford. I was reading about her, didn't post for a loooong time (I actually had forgotten about this site) until AntiqueGirl got a hold of me again on Facebook not too long ago, because she knows I'm in the military, posted to Trenton. We had kept in touch since the missing Tori Stafford days.

I have no idea who Dana Tkachenko, Lachlan Cranswick even are (and I still don't. Guess I should catch up?). I only know about Deborah Rashotte because of where I live and the papers and seeing flyers/hearing the radio. I've only ever participated in a few topics here (RW, etc) because I just don't know anything about the others - and the fact that it's near and dear to my heart.

For the curious, I have submitted all of my info (and work phone number) to Tricia to "verify" that I am who I am, and that I work exactly where I say I do. She's yet to call me, or email me though. Short of posting a picture of myself in uniform (with my former WCWO) it's all I can do. Sorry, but I won't give you all my SIN number ;)

Anything else you'd like to know? Ask away :)

Fair enough, and Thanks for the response !! I told you, we can be Doubting Thomases ;) We aren't into outing members, just needing to know they are credible. And no pics necessary ... never a good idea for crime forum members.

No worries. I have nothing to hide :)

I am who I say I am - I don't know why anyone would fake their identity on a forum? For what purpose? I don't get it, quite honestly. I don't go on any of the other forums (or threads) because I simply don't know anything about them other than stuff I read in the paper.

I'm only offering information from what I personally know or have seen..(other than the funeral apparently..lol)

Personally, I'm still in shock over the whole RW thing. I know it's been almost a year, but it still seems so surreal when I think about it. I just don't know when he found the time to do all of this stuff! On many occasions, I would go back into the office at night to finish up the pay (or whatever) in my sweats and flipflops, and he'd still be there in his flight suit working, asking me why was I "burning the midnight oil". His Beemer was always there, parked in the W Comd's spot. He'd still be there when I left, and he'd be there in the morning before many others arrived. Being a W Comd is a very, VERY time consuming job, without much time to yourself.

It's all just so crazy :(

Trust me (LOL) ... it happens in crime forums !! I know from personal experience when I got seriously and dangerously duped a few years back on another forum.

Isn't that kinda lame? :waitasec: I have enough drama in my life without worrying about trying to have one on the internet...

Sorry, OT:

Credible terrorist threat thwarted. President Obama has confirmed that "Initial analysis of two U.S.-bound packages examined abroad indicate they contain explosive material".

Two packages discovered, but still warning of possible other packages/attacks

Yes, it's lame .. but sadly it's true. Criminals are just as interested in crime as we are, and the internet is just another tool they can use.

he was probably downloading his pictures to his computer...I thought MEH owned the BMW and he drove the Pathfinder... you were lucky he didn't "eyeball" you being as you were working late close to him... sounds like this guy did not require a lot of sleep but we know this as fact now considering his midnight adventures.... I agree being CO of a base involves a lot of work but he did have his flunkies...Lots of time off doing PR etc. and no one to answer to....

I saw both. He seemed to have a BMW fairly often too, because I remember thinking it was a really nice car. The W Comds spot is right in front of the HQ front doorsteps, so you can't miss it. He rarely drove a staff car. Or, if he did, it wasn't parked in his spot.

Ewww about the pics. I hadn't thought of that :(

He wouldn't eyeball me...I'm too old and chubby..LOL
