I agree, I think LE has an obligation to let the public know. Not like a press conference or anything, but I think they would have to update their websites, and missing persons posters/media etc.

I'm don't think they have the responsibility to keep family secrets (not tell family members she is found if she doesn't want to be). I think they would advise the missing person that they will communicate to the family for them (tell the family she is found but does not want to be contacted by family). I'm just guessing here, not sure that actual protocols, I wonder what they are...

I would assume this as well. The family members still have Shannon's information on their facebook pages, if she was safe and sound somewhere and they had comfirmation of it they would probably take down her missing info.

They have always updated the City Media site with a release - They just say that the person has been located.

They may not give specifics. Here is an example:

I hope that in that case that you mention, LE did a super thorough job of investigating, because I have read that it is not rare at all for homicides to be mistaken for suicides.

I briefly followed the Hillary Sharma thread here on WS awhile back. She was another young, vivacious woman and aspiring photographer from Ohio who went missing.

The circumstances of her disappearance definitely left open two scenarios - could've been suicide or foul play. Her car was discovered at a park and they searched the park and found her belongings (IIRC her purse hanging from a tree and I her camera). Friends of hers said her she would never do this to her beloved camera and someone must've done this. Supposedly her car wasn't there when park rangers searched one day, but then was there a day after or something like that, so highly suspicious and looked almost to be foul play.

They eventually found her body in the river and she had hung herself from a park tree and the branch broke so she was in the river. So, so sad. So young and seemed so full of life. I tried to find any MSM info after and it went quiet for a long time. Only until way later did MSM finally publish that it wasn't foul play. I truly hope this isn't the situation in Shannon's story :(

If Shannon did not come forward to police but to a trusted friend or family member and that
person has not informed police then the police wouldn't know.

The woman is missing. Her family and police have made a request that the public come forward with any information they may have about this missing person. It makes no sense to me that she is not missing, and it's a big secret such that her family, police, and the community are kept in the dark. Until her family and police are satisfied that she is alive and well, she is missing. Given the length of time that she has been missing, and the fact that there do not appear to be any leads (at least nothing posted in the news), it's quite likely that she is deceased.

In other missing cases I have followed recently, I have found that when there is nothing for LE to follow, there is silence. Then even if still nothing, about one month later, there might be a followup news story to try to get people motivated to call in again... then it seems as time goes on, that period of one month may extend longer and longer. I am feeling like SB is already somewhat of a cold case, especially since even the family do not appear to be keeping her missing status in the forefront of the public's eye.

I went looking for it, but I can't find it, but recently I was reading about a missing young man who had some kind of mental/health issue, I can't remember if he was slightly developmentally challenged, or what the issue was with him exactly. He had gone off and not been heard from for too long, and his family was worried sick. He was found fairly quickly, I forget if the young man called police himself, or if someone else did, but he was alive and fine and just did not want contact with his family for whatever reason.

I recall writing (but I forget where??) about how the family felt that although they were ecstatic that he was okay, they were also heartbroken that he didn't wish them to know his whereabouts. LE were maintaining his right as an adult, to privacy, and unfortunately their hands were tied as far as letting the family know where he was. That is really how simple it is, to just report that you or someone is safe, but the person just doesn't want to have contact with family or anyone from their past. There is no reason to keep the family suffering, or to allow anyone expending any energy in looking for the person, or commitments expecting SB to perform certain agreed upon things, to continue to do so. Even if SB had contacted a close friend, I'm sure that somehow the person would be able to get through to SB that she needed to let LE know she was safe, and that would be the end of the case.

I am just not feeling many alternatives in this case, as to her life status.

In Calgary I did see ONE time a 16 year old that went missing and they never actually updated her as 'found', but put out a release that a 16 year old who had been missing is now safe, but for personal reasons they were not giving out her identity. I always wondered how they expected everyone to know who it was so they were not looking for her anymore. I cannot seem to find it, but I know there was a thread on WS too. I will look and link if I can find it.

It's starting to warm up a little outside.

Let's hope this missing person investgation is about to heat up too!

Investigators have received information indicating she may be in either Vancouver or Toronto, Ontario.

I just find above statement very strange. If they think the information is valid, then surely they know which city she likely to be in. There are 3,400 miles separating Vancouver from Toronto, so which is it?

She didn't drive her own car to Vancouver or Toronto, so how did she get there? If she flew, there would be a record. Did someone drive her? Who is paying her expenses? Why hasn't she contacted her family? If she is alive and having some kind of breakdown, she would likely need a health card to get treatment.

She doesn't sound like the type of person who would stay hidden. If she was in Vancouver or Toronto, surely she would be out and about, and she would probably be caught on video in some kind of establishment.

I would agree. I think the theory of her running away to one of these cities can be safely ruled out.

If the police received any information that *may* indicate that she could have been in another city, they would be remiss if they didn't explore that avenue.

I pointed out another case upthread where police released a similar statement for Lisa Mitchell stating she may be in other cities. She was subsequently found in her home, deceased:

Personally, I would have liked to have seen more information, such as "there have been unverified sightings" which likely means members of the public have called in saying they have seen someone "that looks like her" but there is no actual proof.

I looked up the Lisa Mitchell case on the link you provided (thanks), and it looks as if it was over 2 years before they even issued a search warrant!

I'm trying to remain an un-biased observer but this is gross. 2 years in the house? BA-RF.
In relation to SB, the media reports have communicated that JB has been nothing but cooperative with LE. I would assume that would mean letting them have access to their home?

So little information has been provided...who really knows. I'm sure Shannon's family must be frustrated with the process.

I wonder if the Toronto contact is this CS who was a filmmaker once in Edmonton, now in Toronto and did the C:MCNuts film..? No posts on FB since 21st of Nov., but doesn't post often to FB either

Curious who C Mcnut might be, are you referencing a rap artist who, dressed like a squirrel, raps poems by Wordsworth?

She could be caught on all sorts of video. Most people in those cities won't even be aware she's "missing". Health care providers might also be bound by privacy laws.
