azgrandma you have mentioned something i have seen over and over again in this forum, the bike outside. no one knows whos bike it is first off. i can tell you that dylan is 5 feet tall. if that were a larger framed bike he would not have fit on it to comfortably ride it. we also do not know if the bike was in working order. so many times i have seen bikes laying around with missing pieces or with flat tires. maybe it did not work. if it was at MRs house chances are it was MRs bike and it would have been too large for dylan

I'm 5'10 and my 12yo is 4'11 but he comfortably rides my mountain bike.

Assuming Dylan was there on Monday morning-if his plan was to get to Bayfield by hitch hiking, after MR left for his errands, then Dylan probably wouldn't take the bike.

I do not call my kids when they are home alone unless I have a specific question. They are smart cookies. I taught them well, I trust them well. I wouldn't leave them if I didn't think they couldn't handle it just fine.

vasportsmom, that may be so in your case but not in every case. this is one subject i am an expert on. i used to run a bike drive for needy children in NY for years and i am a professional mechanic. there are certain bikes and certain frame sizes that will not fit a person who is 5 feet. i am 5'10 as well and there are some larger framed road bikes/mt bikes i can barely climb on to. given the multitude of sizes and styles (and types of bikes) it is likely there are many bikes someone who is 5 feet will not be able to ride or comfortably ride
bikes are my life and how i make a living, i can talk about them forever but it would probably bore you.

if a bike was there that he could use why would he not cycle to Bayfield instead of getting a lift by a complete stranger ?

But wouldn't a bike make more sense than walking? In that area it doesn't look as if it is a heavily traveled road. I know it's been reported that he had hitch hiked in the past, but I would imagine a kid walking along and getting a ride from someone he knew and calling that hitch hiking.

Trust me living in London I have no idea how rural some areas can be or how far away places can be as I have everything on my doorstep . It's shocking when I read on wiki that the population is less than 1600 people .

I can kind of believe that Dylan fell asleep around 8pm and did not wake up again before morning'; that is not impossible. But I can't believe he would not try to use his phone in the morning once he did wake up, especially since he had missed his ride for the arrangements he had made with his friends the night before.

The only way I can see him not using the phone is if he was literally taken away from the couch in his sleep, practically. But we are told he ate cereal, etc. That is where I get stuck-would he really eat breakfast, get dressed, put the TV on, etc. and not be texting his friends to let him know the plan? Would he set off on foot, still not reaching out to anyone?

I just can't visualize the morning rituals his father says he performed being done without also poking away at his phone to check texts, make contact, etc. (Unless of course, the "phone was broken", lol).

Hello all.

Something I read in one of the first articles that reported Dylan's disappearance that has been at the back of my mind.... July 11, 1984, Christopher James Harvey, age 14, disappeared from his family's summer trailer home on the edge of the San Juan National Forest, approximately 17 miles northwest of Pagosa Springs. He went to walk his dog - the dog came back but he never did.

I finally got around to checking out where this occured - 17 miles northwest (as the crow flies) of Pagosa Springs lands you right around the Vallecito Reservoir.

It's a huge time difference, 28 years, but just thought I'd put it out there as it's been nagging at me.

That's something I can't get past either, he gets off the plane, starts texting his friends (or calling) to make plans, in the morning wakes up, eats breakfast, watches tv but NEVER tries to contact his friends, the same friends he was so anxious to see Sunday night. Odd.

Aww, I'd be a basket case. There are days I'd happily buy the ring and marry my 17yo off but when it comes down to it I will probably try to lock him away and never let him leave home. God help the girl that tries to take my baby. I'm likely to snap and kill her.

I wonder how often he's had to resort to using a land line. If his phone wasn't working that morning, it may not have even occurred to him that he could "talk" to someone on one of those ancient things. MOO

I am not even sure I now buy he would of refused to get up at 6:30am

He is a young active 13 year old and he had over 9 hours sleep which is a lot and over the recommended 6/7 hours we need !

Add in the fact he was super excited to see his friends the night before and could not go , so that excitement would build and not diminish over night . It's his first day of his holiday and he has plans with his friends , why would he not get up ????

Here is one scenario that maybe could explain not using the phone; someone he knows or his Dad knows arrives while he is having his cereal, tells him he will drive him into Bayfield if he hurries. Dylan grabs his stuff, says he needs to let his friends and father know, the person tells him he can text or call them from the car, just to hurry up. And then once in the vehicle, the phone is taken away from him and he is abducted instead.

The bike I saw beside MRs house looked to be a bmx style not a mountain bike IMO
