Right now on IS Jodi Ariass trial there is a man testify from Verizon about the information on a cell report for a particular number. He is explaining time, dates, and cell towers. Interesting. jmo

There is a difference between pinging and tracking gps coordinates and there is also a difference between a phone with GPS and one without. From what I can gather...

Pinging is when it bounces off towers and triangulation is used to narrow down a general location. Pings are available on phones with and without GPS but it only shows the last general area for a phone.

GPS gives an exact location of the phone. Obviously it is only available on phones with this ability and those with the GPS option turned on. (I know on my iphone I can turn it on or off) I suspect the companies storing geographical information for a year is referring to phones with GPS. I'm not 100% sure.

I am pretty sure that when you turn off the GPS this only affects the GPS being used for apps that add your location. FB would be an example of that. But, the GPS keeps working especially for 911 calls, locating the phone, etc. jmo

I think the only important cell info is the fact that Dylans went silent around 8 pm
I would love to know where MR said they were at 8 pm.

Let me know if you learn anything! The one article is from 2007 so it's possible that things have changed over the years with how and what cell phone companies keep. We are in the age of data storage! I guess what I'm wanting to know is; is ping information stored for a year or just GPS location stored for a year. I realize the article from 2007 says ping information only shows last ping location. But this article is from 2007 and things may have changed.

According to LE Dylan's phone was shut off at 8pm Sunday so they are unable to track it after that. Does that mean it was disabled; as in the battery removed/or needing to be replaced or the phone was destroyed? Or does it simply mean the phone was shut off for whatever reason?

I would love to know about MR's phone. And we can assume that LE has this information. Still no arrest, so there can't be anything too incriminating...or could there be?

Why did his phone go silent?
Why take a fishing pole?
Why take everything he came there with?

Makes no sense to me!

Bessie had some wonderful current info. and I believe it talked about storage as well, but I wouldn't know where to look for the links. It was a few threads ago IIRC.

I dont think his phone will show anything other than airport home.
Only because I think something happend on that ride home so wherever the area is where one of the two phones stop and no ping is detected is probably where they need to start looking.

I dont think MR's phone will show much unless he went far off the beaten path
but if his phone stopped also red flag for me!

I found where Nurse had bumped the info from Bessie. Hope this link works for you.

I agree it's odd but it's possible that;

He shut off the phone due to no reception at Dads?
He thought he and the friends might go fishing?
He was going to stay a few days with the friends?

We just don't know enough. That's why I'm trying to figure out if the phone simply could have been turned off (as LE stated) or was it not functioning for whatever reason.

That's early for someone his age who used his phone often, IMO.

I've asked several times, but wanted to check again. Has anyone found a link for LE saying (even if not a direct quote - just anything from MSM or a press release) that Dylan's phone was shut off at 8pm? Or anything from LE saying anything about Dylan's phone in conjunction with 8pm? Thanks

A Kid will never shut off their phone!
Even if its dead they keep turning the darn thing on and off JUST in CASE!! LOL

I think his friends would have said hey we were going to go fishing im not buying the fishing stuff

and I do not think he would be staying a few days at friends houses and take all his things!

But thats JMO

Ill say!!
This is why parents often times take the phone away because they are on it ALL NIGHT long!

Kids very rarely call each other all they do is text!

No activity on the Cell phone is the one factor that makes me believe that something happend to him at 8 pm something happend to him when his phone went silent.

If Dylan fell asleep early Sunday night, after being up until 4am that morning and traveling that afternoon, would his phone still have activity on it?

  • #317
Here is another thought on tracking sources. It wouldn't tell where Dylan had been, but it would tell where Mark had been, if Mark's truck had XM radio. It works off satellite. If it has it, LE would be able to track where the vehicle went in that time frame. Perhaps LE already has this info and got it when they took the vehicles.

As far as I saw, it said there was no activity, as in no texts or calls. Doesn't mean it was shut off or had a dead battery at that point. It was later when LE released the statement that it had been shut off for a couple of days. It didn't say it was shut off right away.

If somebody knew about GPS the maybe that could explain the phone being broken ?

Maybe they did not know the phone was not capable of GPS and thought they had to kill the phone to stop the tracking of it ??

I'm going to kiss you :-) and add one more too. Although not a direct quote, it's one of the few things reported as coming from LE about the phone.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Department says the boy’s cell phone has been turned off for several days, and they can’t track it down.

This is national public radio in CO on Nov 26th -

http://radiocoloradocollege.org/2012/11/searchers-still-seek-clues-to-missing-colorado-springs-boy/

I guess this just says his phone has been SHUT OFF for several days and they can't track it. The others say NO ACTIVITY since 8pm Sunday. Good point!

So no I guess there is nothing that says his phone was SHUT OFF ON SUNDAY AT 8PM.

Thanks for pointing that out!
