Does anyone know if the door to the house was locked when MR left and when he returned that morning?

I asked this a few days ago because of a theory I had, but noone seems to know. I don't think it's been addressed in the media.

We have pondered that many times and as far as I know it's never been
said either way. It would tell a LOT , wouldn't it ?

However no matter what MR said some, even me, might not believe him, right?
So if he said it was locked or not, would we know any more ?

From what I have read here Dylan was not in an unfamiliar place. And there was a land line, wasn't there? I'm thinking I have read there was one. I think I would have done the same thing that MR did. Namely, send text messages on the cell phone. No response would mean the kid's still sleeping. Dylan knew the area and had friends in the area. I would assume, as MR did, that Dylan was out and about doing what he always did when he lived there. I came home many, many times when my sons were teenagers and they weren't home. I never once automatically thought they were kidnapped. I went about my business, assuming, as MR did, that they were having a good time with their friends. I don't think the first thing that would come into my head when my son wasn't home when I arrived is that he had been kidnapped. Just saying....

Me neither. My son would be out in the neighborhood visiting friends and I wouldn't worry about him. I would never once have thought he'd been kidnapped or disappeared for months on end. And I certainly wouldn't be able to have total recall of everything we did and the order we did it in leading up to his disappearance. Why? Because I wouldn't have expect the outcome there is in this case.

Another thought that occurred to me is that MR said he went to Tristan's house to see if Dylan was there. Has anyone heard/read if LE has verified where Tristan's parents were that day? I assume that LE has done so, but has anyone heard this mentioned in any interview or article? If Dylan was texting Tristan the night before (in addition to R), then Tristan's parent could have come to get Dylan. Just speculating, of course. I would assume that the parent(s) were at work. Where was Tristan? Just curious....

Yes, I have been wondering this exact thing. The other friends came forward and have been featured in the media and we see that they attend all the events. T's family has not been heard from, as far as I know. I just think they could put a little context on how Dylan behaved when he was up at his dad's, as opposed to being in town. I assume the parents are sheltering T from this though, and I wouldn't blame them for not approaching the media.

I have wondered if the media ever tried contacting them or others in Vallecito - I never see any neighbors or anyone from up there being interviewed.

Does anyone know if the door to the house was locked when MR left and when he returned that morning?
Another question that I have also. Would MR have expected that Dylan would lock the door when he leaves?

Snipped:
Like you, I noticed in many of Dylan's pictures he is not smiling and in fact looks miserable in some or is standing apart from everyone else in the picture.

This makes me so sad :(

I think it would be a terrible idea to say my child would NEVER do this. I think the likelihood of any behavior has to be put on a scale of probability - what was he likely to do in a certain situation, and assume that even if miniscule, all behaviors have some probability.

Not necessarily. They may be trying to run down anyone ELSE who was in the area that might have seen something odd that night or later.

Example (this did not really happen): I travel to Las Vegas in the winter and go through Red Rock Canyon. I take pictures, other people take pictures, maybe my car is in one of their pictures. As it happens, I go hiking and while hiking I run into another hiker who has no jacket. Looks weird, but I continue on, finish my trip and head home. Turns out somebody went missing in Red Rock Canyon, but I am long gone and know nothing about any missing person because I am no longer in the area. However, a local person has my car in a picture and gives it to the police so the police can track me down and find out if I saw anything odd. See how that COULD work?

But if Dylan was with MR, (on the road that night) then aren't they looking for someone who might have footage of their vehicle? Why would they be looking at other people's vehicles if Dylan was safe and sound with MR? I guess I don't understand your point.

my guess would be to identify any vehicles going into or out of the area as to the time period in question.

My husband has a degree in psychology and often says if a teenager doesn't test positive for schizophrenia then something is wrong with him/her. It's just a stage they go through and usually outgrow. Point being, it is normal for a teenager to be unpredictable!

I called it "The Evasion of the Body Snatchers." My kids went in their room one night and the next morning, someone completely different came out of there. No longer was the person who looked like my kid sound like him/her. Everything I taught them went out the window. All of a sudden they liked different music, dressed differently, and thought my house rules were negotiable. It's bizarre to realize you are living with a stranger in your house.

I recently found out from my son who is a grown man with 3 children, that when he was a kid, he'd go down to the railroad tracks and "ride" a train to his friends house. This is the kid who did "everything right", never cause any trouble, was obedient (so I thought) got good grades, went to an AP school, we polite, all the adults in his life adored him, just an all around good kid.

It never occurred to me to "warn" him to stay off the railroad tracks because to me they went nowhere he wanted to be. They were dangerous and I didn't think he would do anything like that.

(I might add here that Dylan DID hitchhike and his mother DID have to have that discussion with him.)

No, I don't think that question has ever been answered. I know it's been brought up a few times though. It is an important question and needs an answer. IMO

If parents say my child would "never" do such and such, is that the same as a parent saying they would "never" do anything to harm their child?

I don't believe Dylan would have run away because at some point he would have contacted someone and he hasn't.

There is (imo) a big difference between an 11 year old and a 13 year old. My girls were recently those ages, and you wouldn't think two years is a big difference, but it's HUGE. Just the same as there is a big difference between a 13 year old and a 15 year old. This is a time when big changes occur in the brain. I don't believe someone could control a 13 year old in the same way as one could control an 11 year old. (jmo)

Ben Ownby, who was abducted and kept along with Shawn Hornbeck, was 13 years old.

I've been thinking about the missing fishing pole. Mark said that he noticed it was missing. Does that mean that Dylan had to take it with him when he disappeared?

Maybe the fishing pole was lost or stolen before Nov 19th and Mark didn't notice it was gone until he went to look for it. It could have been accidentally left behind when it was last used or it could have been left in the back of Mark's truck and stolen. MOO.

Here's a description from Beth Karas of how the abductor was able to keep Shawn Hornbeck -

Q: What was captivity like for Shawn Hornbeck? Is it true he tried to contact his family?

A: Shawn described his first month as particularly torturous. He was tied to a futon and had duct tape over his mouth so he couldn’t yell or scream while Devlin was at work. But the abuse didn’t stop there, Shawn was also sexually abused. After a month, Devlin had complete control over Shawn and slowly permitted more liberty to him. In time, Shawn had a cell phone, access to the internet, he made a friend, and even ventured out of the home. It is true that Shawn tried to contact his family via the internet. He posted a message to them asking how long they planned to search for their son. He called himself “Shawn Devlin,” hoping his family would take the hint. His father saw the message but didn’t put it together.

Yes, he did. My point being that neither MR nor R were concerned when Dylan did not respond to their text messages. Was this normal behavior for Dylan? Why was no one concerned that he was not responding to their text messages? I suppose they thought he was just sleeping in. Who knows?

R is a child MR is dylans father why should R be concerned when D's dad didnt let him go the night before He probably figured Dylan had to bail yet again and wasnt coming. Why would R be concerned?

I completely agree that there is a big difference between an 11 and 13 year old, maturity and cognitive functioning vastly changed in most cases. But I think the "stockholm syndrome" can happen to a victim at any age. Look at all the women that love and stay with their male counterparts that mentally and physically abuse them - they feel stuck financially plus they have been brainwashed to believe they don't deserve any better.

What if we played a game today?
What if we assumed every thing said by MR is 100% true ?
Where does that lead us ?
( i know he says this or that and some things changed over time , but the gist
of it is let's assume he's truthful to the best of his ability )

I like this game for sleuthing's sake but to me, it means horrible things might have happened to Dylan. Like abduction by a sexual predator.

Still don't think much of the runaway theory. It has been entirely too long.

Just to prove my point that I do indeed see some red flags concerning MR, I think this quote of his sounds more like something someone would say at a funeral:

“I want everyone to know how much I love that boy and how much I cared about him, and how much I thank the community for all the effort that they put in,” he said. “He was such a wonderful boy. He meant everything.”

Everything is in past-tense. This I DO find strange!

Yes, and this is MR talking just a couple of days after the disappearance.

I'm still looking for a article where LE says they ruled out this was Dylan.

I searched and searched. I could not find anything stating LE ruled out what the postal work reported seeing. LE even asked to talk to the two boys that were allegedly seen. Nothing has been reported to claim who these two boys were. It is possible the postal workers claim is not credible, but we have nothing from LE. The postal worker recognized Dylan, but no mention of recognizing the other boy. In my opinion, it is important to remember that perps come in all shapes and sizes.

Snip- A postal worker who knows Dylan reported possibly seeing him walking along County Road 501 in Vallecito Monday afternoon with another boy about the same age. Both had backpacks.

Investigators have not been able to determine who the two boys were that the postal worker saw. Both boys were said to be wearing hoodies and dark backpacks. The sheriff’s office is asking anyone who may fit that description and who was in that area around 2 p.m. last Monday, to contact La Plata Sheriff’s Investigator Tonya Golbricht at 970-382-7019. Whoever it may have been is not in trouble. Investigators just want to determine if it was Dylan the postal worker saw or if it was two other boys.

My best theory would be that Dylan snapped out of his hazy sleep stage when MR shut the door that morning. He grabbed his backpack and shoes and rushed out the door to catch MR, but he was already gone. Dylan may have locked the door behind him on purpose or accidentally. If his phone battery died overnight in his bag, he could've been locked out with no means to communicate with anyone. The TV could've been still on from the night before and the cereal bowl from a late-night snack. The ipod could've been left behind because Dylan didn't think to grab it. The texting the night before ended because Dylan had already made his plans. MR saying that Dylan was on the couch texting or playing a game or video or something leads me to believe that it was the Ipod and not the phone that Dylan was using. I don't know if this is actually what happened or if I even buy it, but I think it would fit what we've been told so far.
