He said that Washington is a city in decay, and if you can’t beat a political opponent, you persecute them.
Can't they do both?

It does sound humorous - until you realize what he's doing with this phrasing - "I'm being arrested for you!" "I'm being indicted for you!" He is likening himself to Jesus - who (as it's been said) died on the cross for our sins. Make no mistake, he knows exactly what he's doing. What a great guy! He doesn't even know me and he's being arrested for me.
It is authoritarianism at its worst! I was watching the live report on ABC today and was very surprised when a reporter said in a recent poll, 70% of Republicans still believe the election was "stolen." smhIt does sound humorous - until you realize what he's doing with this phrasing - "I'm being arrested for you!" Trump’s new judge is a tough Jan. 6 sentencer — and has a history with him
Meet Tanya Chutkan, the Obama appointee who was randomly chosen to preside over Trump's newest case.www.politico.com
imo, it sounds like several of the federal judges in D.C. have a low opinion of Trump about Jan. 6th. From the politico link:Nhehz

It was said during ABC's live coverage this afternoon, but I don't remember if they identified the pollster. Sorry. They also put on the screen that Trump vs. Biden both are polling at 43%.That’s worded like a CNN poll. Is it?
In Canada, CBC TV reporting is that Trump is leading by 30 points by relying on public sympathy for his persecution. He can be elected even if he is in prison. Upon election, he can pardon his criminal charges. Is that true?Forced to wait by the judge, Trump is out of his comfort zone

Donald Trump is not a man used to waiting.
But at a court hearing in the nation's capital, the former US president found himself fidgeting in his seat while he waited 20 minutes for the judge to arrive.b
In the meantime, he also stole furtive glances at Special Counsel Jack Smith, the prosecutor who has now indicted him in two separate federal cases.
In recent days, Mr Trump has raged on social media against what he calls a continuing "witch hunt" led by a "deranged" and "wild" Mr Smith.
But in the courtroom, he had to stay silent.

Oh dear, is Mr. Trump going to pout because he was not addressed as Mr. President. GMAFBI always thought Mr. Lastname was the proper address, but to fact-check, I consulted Emily Post.

Addressing a Former President of the United States
When addressing a former President of the United States in a formal setting, the correct form is “Mr. LastName.” (“President LastName” or “Mr. President” are terms reserved for the current head of state.) This is true for other ex-officials, as well.emilypost.com
