Hey Everyone.
The topic is the shooting and the shooting only. Please stay on topic.
Did I read correctly that the dinner is "resuming"?

No, it did not resume. It will be rescheduled within 30 days according to President Trump. He stated that from his presser on PBS.

In that photo Vern just posted there is a box-like unit just to the left of the guy, is that a portable defibrillator?

If it is (and I suspect it is), it was IMO purely precautionary as if they had to use it on the shooter he wouldn't then be left face down ... he'd be on his back.

Lots of people in that room could have been the target of the shooter. Really have to wonder how he was able to gain entry with weapons. It's really quite incredible.
Very unusual. I thought Trump had totally revamped the Secret Service and improved it. What kind of gun did the shooter have?

Sounds like a real failure in defense. Guy assembles gun in room just before metal detectors. Why weren't metal detectors at the actual door? If there were carts in that area he could have used a cart and entered how those employees did.

Yep. After the attempt in 2024, it is really mind-boggling that the Secret Service would allow this big of a failure to happen again. He wasn't a far ways away. He was steps from making it into the lobby. Steps from attendees. Assembled his weapon right outside the venue. What was going on here?

I can't wrap my mind around the logistics of this. I've been to many events in that ballroom. DCers call it the Hinckley Hilton because of the Reagan assassination attempt outside of it. The WHCD happens yearly, and so you would expect Secret Service has extensive and familiar plans for this exact event.

I've never attended the WHCD, but have been in that ballroom many times for other events, and have been at other events with a POTUS or VPOTUS where the Secret Service perimeter (by which any human, car, etc getting beyond the perimeter must be invited, vetted, and Secret Service bodily checked) was always much greater than the distance from the entrance of the ballroom to the stage. Just logistically my mind can't wrap around someone walking into the hotel, supposedly assembling a gun on the lobby floor, walking downstairs, and then close enough to the ballroom doors and Secret Service to shoot so that gunshots could be heard inside.

I'm well aware that since the early 2000s Secret Service has had many organizational, leadership, and funding challenges that make their protection...not as thorough as it should be. But still...I just can't piece together how this occurred at this event and location. (Note: I am not at all implying anything conspiratorial. More likely human systems failures. I'm just unable to make it make sense.)

Wolf Blitzer said he was right by the mens room, the bullets were so close he thought he was being shot at. Still, the gist is that he actually shot from outside the metal detectors?

Yep... I'm sorry but it is just outrageous that he could make it into the building at all while armed with a deadly weapon?!

Metropolitan Police rep at the press conference at the hotel said they believe the shooter was a guest at the hotel.

The woman from the WH Correspondents Association said the guy was prepared to do a lot of damage. It’s not yet known who he was targeting. He was stopped by the DC Metro Police.

  • The suspected gunman was identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, who authorities believe acted alone in the attack.
  • Officials say Allen was armed with multiple weapons and opened fire outside the Washington Hilton before being stopped by Secret Service agents.
  • Investigators are continuing to examine evidence, including a long gun and shell casings, as charges against Allen are expected to be filed soon.

Which naturally begs the question, how long he'd been planning this.

I suspect a thorough search of his property & digital life will answer those questions.

Human systems failures could include morale. Hard to measure and compensate for.
