DC - Twelve killed, 8 injured in shooting at Washington Navy Yard, 16 Sept 2013

Alexis, 34, of New York, was a Navy aviation electrician's mate, third class, who spent time in Texas and Illinois. It was not immediately clear if he was still enlisted.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the first call came in just after 8:15 a.m., and that officers were on the scene within seven minutes.

Is it just me or does that seem like a long time.

My son is a civilian security contractor on a large naval base. His job is to shoot and kill anyone trying to do what this guy did today. Today was his day off but the base called him in to work because they were on high alert--all hands on deck.

I am surprised that this guy was able to take down the armed security and get into the building. My son has a partner with him at all times. I would think if one was shot the other could get the shooter. But I guess it happens too fast.

Alexis' former roommate Oui Sathamtewakul told News 8's Jim Douglas that he last worked at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth. He left the Navy between two and three years ago, Sathamtewakul said.

The roommate said Alexis was a contractor and suspected that was why he was in Washington D.C. Sathamtewakul said he was "shocked" at the allegations; Alexis was a practicing Buddhist and never showed any signs of aggression toward him. Sathamtewakul said he knew Alexis had a concealed handgun license and that he owned a gun.

Alexis grew up in Brooklyn with his mother, Sarah, and father, Anthony Alexis, his aunt Helen Weeks told the Washington Post.
She said: "We haven’t seen him for years. I know he was in the military. He served abroad. I think he was doing some kind of computer work."

Washington DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that police were still hunting for another possible suspect.

She described the man as black, between 40 and 50, and dressed in olive military uniform. He was holding a "long gun".

if the gunman used the id from someone that was recently dismissed from his job, I wonder why the other man did not have to surrender his id at the time of dismissal?

shouldn't it be SOP to surrender all id cards, especially if used to gain access to Naval Yard?

[Updated at 4:40 p.m. ET] The FBI has released the following pictures of Alexis.
The bureau is asking people with any information about him to call it at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
The FBI is looking for information about his recent movements and his associates,
said Valerie Parlave, assistant director in charge of the Washington FBI Field Office, at a news conference in Washington.

So glad this guy was a Buddhist and not another religion. One less thing to blame this on. :seeya:

It is frowned upon for employee's to lose their badge (picture ID) or wear it out in public.
I am waiting to hear how he was able to get the badge/ID.

and local news reporting he was a quiet man; buddist, also a report from a disgruntled ex room mate who claims he put sugar in his gas tank. Not much online presence that I see. NSA must have yanked it.

If I can locate the link again. The stolen id was owned by a Rollie Chance (?).
I wondered where the perp got the opportunity to take it ?
You have a good point...
And I also thought it would seem there may have been a breakdown in security. :moo:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-24...ooted-Navy-years-ago-previous-gun-charge.html

Police are investigating whether the ID of a former Navy petty officer called Rollie Chance was used by Alexis to gain entrance to the the Navy Yard compound.

Found it.
What a tragic day.

You are not allowed to leave your post to take a bathroom break. You have to wait to be backed up by another guard before you can go. They are very strict.
