Decorah, IA - Bald Eagle Cam: Watch the babies! #2

anyone watching the Hancock nest? It looks like attacks going on - very agitated...

For any of you watching White Rock Eagles - one of the parents is valiantly protecting the babies from another bird. I wish the other parent would show up and help. This is heartbreaking. Just peeked, and he showed up and the bird is gone. I hope the babies are alright. Mom or Dad was jumping all over the nest and spreading wings to cover the babies. Oye, I may have to give this up....

Wow, I just saw something utterly amazing. The mama eagle from the Hancock nest is all in an uproar. Well, I looked on the wide angle camera and sure enough there's another bird sitting up above her and the babies. She was raising absolute heck. Daddy came to the rescue though, I could see him coming from the distance and he swooped and had the other bird not flown away, he would have taken his head off. It was absolutely unbelievable and darn it my fingers weren't quick enough to get a screenshot of it.

OMG - I can't believe we all posted that at the same time. Dad came and damn near took that bird's head off, unbelievable.

Before the other bird was sitting on the branch, all I could see was his feet dipping down toward the nest many,many times. Darn, I missed Dad's swoop in because I was posting here, but I did hear the commotion. I looked away for a second and missed it.

I'm surprised we were all watching them at the same time. I haven't checked on them in 2 days.

It was mom trying to protect them but daddy was coming in fast. The bird took off in a swoop and had it been 1/2 second later, daddy would have served him for dinner. Amazing. I had to turn it off after that, I was panicking as well. I did get two pretty good screenshots. You can see the bird in the first photo on my PB picture as he was flying away. I was a split second short of getting the shot with dad.

If he didn't actually see him, he sensed or heard him because he took off just a nanosecond before daddy got there. That was a sound from the mother that I hadn't heard before. I would imagine had that bird come a bit closer to her she would have gotten a hold of him too. Wow, that was just unbelievable to witness. I can't watch anymore tonight but I can guarantee dad won't be too far away from the nest.

I just read the blog at White Rock. The attack lasted 30 minutes and the other bird was a juvenile eagle. They typically scavenge for food and was probably trying to take their food from the nest. Unfortunately, the babies would also look like food.

It would be something to find out that the juvenile eagle was possibly one of their older babies.

That explains then why his head was black. He was a pretty big fellow that's for sure.

Wow, I was offline for most of yesterday afternoon and evening and I obviously missed a lot!! Thanks to everyone who is keeping us posted on all of the happenings of our eagles and the others. I'm so glad we haven't had that kind of drama in Decorah!

It appears Papa had brought a fish for his babies but I couldn't see it in the video above, however in the video below, you can see Papa pick up the fish he brought and fly away. ;( ;(

Thanks Patty, I can't watch the video because it will make me cry. Poor fellow. I hope he finds himself a new mate and they make beautiful babies together next year.

Our Decorah babies are getting so big. They were all just up and spreading their wings a minute ago. I also caught my first poop shoot on a screenshot when E3 let one rip a couple of minutes ago. I get so tickled when I see them do that, all that preparation they do to let it fly. It's hilarious.

I cannot believe how big they are. They do not look that big in the nest.

I feel so sorry for Dad. I hope he is going to be okay. Don't you just wonder what goes through their minds? I say I am not going to look at that no more cause it is so sad, but I keep going to try to find info on Dad.
