I believe an open ended tenancy would mean there is no fixed end date, for instance a lot of landlords would want 4 weeks notice of when the tenant was due to leave, and this would be in their tenancy agreement.

It sounds like the sisters had contacted the landlady a few days before, telling her they intended to leave the property shortly. Maybe the landlady hadn't heard from them for a few days, and went round to speak to them in person to see what was happening.
There are normally certain procedures to go through when ending a tenancy such as an inventory check and inspection of the flat. I would have thought the landlord would have expected to be asked for a reference if the two women had found somewhere else to live . I wonder if they led her to believe they were returning to Hungary.

Perhaps the landlord had said they were increasing the rent in the new year and the women could not afford the higher cost so said they would be leaving, though as people have said there is usually a notice period on both sides of a rent agreement.
The women, from everything that has been reported,do not appear to be the type of tenant to be evicted .

None of the reports I have read have indicated whether most of their possessions had been removed from the flat and just a few things left.

Yes this is quite possible. I don't think the reports saying they had "indicated to the landlady" they would be leaving are particularly helpful. Rather an odd way of phrasing things. I do have concerns what they may have meant. Rather than moving, possibly they had already made a decision about their lives and knew they would no longer be needing accommodation? Hope I'm wrong on that one.
Could be, and possibly the landlady had picked up on something the sisters had mentioned that didn't sit right with her?

I was wondering this too.
Aberdeen is an unusual place for 2 Hungarian females to come and live and work in a coffee shop/hotel.
They're not studying at a language college or training for something in the oil/shipping industries.

I Wonder where they were before Aberdeen?

We have had thousands of recent Polish immigrants in the UK in the last decade or so, Bulgarians and Romanians too although not as many. But Hungarians, is a more unusual one.

I wonder what their immigration status was, now that the UK is no longer part of the EU? I don't think you could get a permanent visa just for working in a Coffee Shop. You'd need to have more of a professional job, such as a nurse etc.

I think they may have made friends with the wrong person/people and have become caught up in something unsavoury.

MOO.
If they came here in 2018, they received a settled status after 5 years of living and working here

Sometimes there is no reason to move at all. I came here out of boredom LOL

There would usually also be returned deposits to be dealt with as well. The reporting on this has not been brilliant in this respect. My initial reaction was that they meant open ended in a way that nothing had been decided or settled and it was something that was in progress without any fixed timeframe and with no pressure from the landlady.

I agree I thought very odd over a week the two are missing and no sign of any family members. Maybe the family dynamics is not as harmonious as it was portrayed. After all we still don’t know why they were in Scotland if it wasn’t education, career or relationship linked (the usual reasons)
JMO
i remember the family saying everything had seemed fine with eliza and henrietta in the early reports. i have a feeling by now they might have more information that made them realise suicide is likely, and they might prefer to process all of this in private. which i think would be very understandable.

Blimey, The Independent have live updates - are they expecting some news today?:

The picture of the path on that thread shows something that might be a streetlight. We've all been assuming that the path was unlit, but were we right to do so? Perhaps one of our Aberdonian correspondants could confirm.

I have found it just a little odd that not one of their family has come to Aberdeen. They may be quite poor of course, but I would have thought that family and friends between them could have funded one.

Some people are really really poor, though. And not only would they need flights but accomodation, food, and transportation. Family may also be unable to travel due to jobs, medical conditions, or other obligations they can't leave right now.

But weren't they chatting on Zoom?

Having internet access doesn't mean they can afford flights abroad and accommodation. Unless I completely misread your post.

Possibly something like medication left in the flat could indicate that they were missing. Something like insulin for a diabetic which they need to carry with them at all times. If the landlady was aware of this she would know immediately that something was wrong if they had left without the medication but it wouldn't necessarily indicate the intentions for leaving.
That's a good theory Touch.

What has the police investigation found?

The landlord of the missing sisters had expressed concern for their welfare after many of their "personal possessions" were discovered inside the property. Officers say the sisters had one mobile phone with them but other devices were found at their home.

A massive land, sea and air search has failed to find any trace of the sisters or any personal belongings. Superintendent David Howieson of Police Scotland said there is "no evidence of criminality so far".

Officers believe they entered the water after going onto a footpath and didn't re-emerge from the path. The force also revealed there have been no suspicious financial transactions since their disappearance.

Hummmn, I wonder if the landlady was expecting to find the property vacated and was surprised to find their possessions still there?

Edit: or perhaps the property appeared partly vacated and left in such a state that it appeared things had been abandoned part way through.

I don't think that scenario quite explains the screaming though, if that is to be believed.
Screaming could indicate an accident (but why were they out at that time?) or I thought it could be more of a squeal/scream you might make entering freezing water. As much as you anticipate the cold, feeling it is another thing altogether.

So it appears that the landlady went to the flat to inspect it and found that they had not removed their stuff. Would that alone prompt police action? The landlady might assume that they had not packed up yet.

Just edited my previous post. I'm wondering it if was partly vacated and looked as if they had stopped part way through as though they had gone out (possibly urgently) in the middle of packing up.

Yea, the landlady may have thought that they got disturbed or something.

I wonder if during the packing up they felt depressed about their circumstances and decided to just walk away leaving it all?

The average Hungarian might still be poorer than the average Brit, but you would need to be a particularly proverty stricken Hungarian not to be able to make it to Aberdeen. Skyscanner tells me that you can fly from Budapest to Edinburgh for £69 return and you can stay at the various Premier Inns around Aberdeen for £42 per night.
