It was freezing, the middle of the night, the river isn't a still body of water, and I have read nothing that suggests either woman knew how to swim. All it would take would be walking out of their depth.

MOO
And they could also have taken something first.

I could see this situation if they had recently moved to Scotland, but the women had been there for ten years and were settled with jobs and a group of friends.
i definitely might be completely off, it’s pure speculation. but people do get (severely) depressed while having wonderful friends and a job too

With mental health nothing is off the table really.

I was not inferring that they could not become depressed ,only that it might not be because of moving to a new country.

Thank you.
On the scale of ways to end one's life I would put that at the very bottom.
Why was one carrying a purse?
Any indication they could have had money with them even though there's been no activity on their accounts?
People do just want to disappear and do so.
So strange and sad.

There's no shame in moving. So if the brother says he didn't know, I believe him.

someone correct me if i’m wrong, but i think in the cold water death from hypothermia could happen quite quickly. i think some people also do a combination of alcohol/medication and going into the water.

Thank you and here's more info.

I am now 100% convinced they lived on Charlotte Street. That is where the CCTV image is captured. Also the picture the brother provided on the BBC web site of them in the snow, I recognised straight away. It is the other side of the archway I have shown from Google maps. See pics below.

So, the route shown earlier in the thread is incorrect. They have walked further than outlined.

Even if they could swim, cold water shock and hypothermia would lead to drowning quite quickly. Also, the police haven't mentioned finding any clothing on the bank, so if they did go into the water they would have been wearing heavy coats and boots. That would have weighed them down as well.

So, the route they took is probably the most direct from their flat. Would take approx 30 minutes and I assume they would be walking at a good pace given the very low temperatures (and as others have noted the CCTV looks like they are walking ‘purposefully’, although it is hard to summarise from one still picture).

I had always thought that path from the media article was off, given the issued CCTV image location.

Yup, I remember it widely discussed here with NB case

Brother probably only knows whatever they told him. Then it becomes a matter of how much and how honest they were with him.

Phone, sleeping pills?

Could they have left the area in someone's boat?
They were caught on camera heading towards the boat club so anything about cameras at the club?
They crossed a bridge yet didn't jump into the river which I gather was partially frozen.

How do authorities know they had a phone with them?

They crossed a bridge yet didn't jump into the river which I gather was partially frozen.

Given the authorities were certain they didn't leave the area, they must have picked up CCTV from either the boat clubs or premises nearby confirming they didn't come out from that path.

The camera which we assume caught them on the bridge and turning right is high up, looking along the bridge and so would assume that captures the water and so would have caught any passing boats.

The theory that they would choose to go across a bridge to enter the water instead of from the other side, or from jumping off the bridge itself, is a matter of privacy. The other bank of the river and the bridge are A roads, likely with traffic all through the night. If they were intent on suicide they wouldn't want to risk being seen and have people possibly intervene.
So going down a dark path to a secluded part of the riverside would be a logical spot...

imo:
There's no good way to take one's life but going this route seems so torturous to me.
If they did have access to pills and enough of them then why not?
This case seems just so bizarre.

Thank you and it's obvious that I've done no homework on this case.

“We don’t really understand why they seem to have left their home address and walked to this area in a fairly direct line before the CCTV footage of them is exhausted.

“One of our theories has to be that they’ve entered the water for reasons unknown, and that’s why so much of our search activity is focused on the river, the river bank, and the harbour itself, but we’re not ruling out the fact that they may have left this area by means that we haven’t identified yet.”
