Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #6

If there is no peristalsis and she is fed via G-tube I would think part of whatever she is given would come up and out of her mouth. Correct me if I am wrong but the gastroesophageal and gastroduodenal sphincters are made up of muscle and without a nervous system they would be flaccid. On the flip side the sphincters could be contracted and may not allow passage of liquids. I would advocate for the ETT, but not a G- or J-tube. So sad.

Long time lucker here. I registered in order to post on this topic.

I believe that Jahi was a very sick girl before the surgery. I'm sure that she was told that there were risks associated with the surgery. I am equally sure that the nurses in the PICU did not tell Jahi and her guests to suction her.

If those things are true and Jahi's family had anything to do with her death, it makes perfect sense to me that in order to emotionally distance themselves from their actions, that they would vilify the hospital/nurses/doctors and be in denial about her death.

I don't think its that unusual for someone to accidentially cause harm (maybe rear ending a car) and to then try to come up with reasons why it was really the other dirvers fault(he stopped too fast). With most of us that process of denial resolves itself fairly quickly. Either with reason, or objective witnesses or judgment.

In this case, Jahi's family may not be able to accept the enormity of their actions and need to stay in denial. The grandmother in particular bothers me. As a LVN she should know how hard nurses and doctors work. The uncle is something else. The picture on his instagram with his arm around Dolan grinning is bizarre.

The mother is truly grieving. Nothing will convince her Jahi is gone. That type of grief speaks to me of deep feelings of guilt. Guilt that her daughter needed the surgery. Guilt that she agreed to it. Guilt that it wasn't done on a different day so there would be a different outcome. If she did anything that really could have affected the outcome (not tell drs about bleeding, making her talk, feeding her, suctioning) then that guilt would be overwhelming. I would fell suicidal if I had done anything that had caused my child's death. Blaming the hospital may the the only way she can cope.

ItsJustaName, Welcome to Websleuths!

I think you are on to something.

Jahi will have made her mark on the world. She has gotten many to debate a topic that is usually avoided.

So true Isabelle. I've learned so much about brain death and a zillion other medical things right here at WS >>>> on this very thread.
I am sorry I had to learn because of Jahi.
But I thank you all for the important life/death lesson.

No one believed they could even find a doctor to do it...no one thought she would ever be moved...

This mother has managed to find support at every turn.

No one found an actively practicing physician or licensed healthcare facility who did this IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAWS AND ETHICAL CONDUCT STANDARDS OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA.

There is a big difference there.

I work with some pretty dark stuff, and I didn't think there could ever be a news story that made me step back and say no more. I think I've just been proven wrong. This is just too much for me. Surgery on a child who has been deceased for nearly a month...it's just so sad and so wrong, IMO. I can't understand why anyone would want this, but clearly this family is unwilling to see the truth before them and I am just glad Jahi is far beyond this suffering.

I don't necessary believe it, how many truths have come from that side? idk jmo

Jahi McMath Will Get Feeding and Breathing Tubes at New Medical Care Facility

by Dave Andrusko | Oakland, CA | LifeNews.com | 1/6/14 2:00 PM

Having reached an accommodation with Children’s Hospital Oakland, the family of Jahi McMath on Sunday moved the teenager, diagnosed as brain dead, to an as yet unnamed New York facility where the 13 year old has been accepted as a patient. There were numerous reports last week that New Beginnings Center in Medford, New York had agreed to take Jahi in and care for her around the clock.

The family’s attorney, Christopher Dolan, said Jahi will be hooked up to a feeding tube and a tracheotomy tube by this morning...

jmo but if they start feeding thru a gtube, Jahi's body is going to go down hill very, very quickly.

At this point the family (and lawyer) have sort of painted themselves into a corner. Even if they do come to realize she is dead, they have to much at stake to back down. After all the vilitrol towards the hospital for not putting in the tubes, of course they have to at least say they tried.

It will be interesting when the facts finally come out.

I think the judge ruled differently.

I'm right there with you. I've followed and commented, and then just sat back and read comments and news over the past day. If this latest tweet is true, I may have to step away from this case. That report on what was happening last week with Jahi's body won't leave my mind, and I'm worried about her mother and siblings witnessing the ugly truth of everything deteriorating and decomposing, when what they are hoping for is a happy, healthy Jahi. Those surrounding them encouraging this, I have certain words for them but they would get me sent to band camp if I voiced them here.

Is it wrong that I'm hoping that today's article about them asking for privacy, plus the surgery tweet, means that her heart may have finally stopped on its own? I just want those who love her to begin to heal. There will be no healing of any kind the way things are now, for Jahi or for her family.

My opinion.

This story is from Monday. As of today Dolan is saying the family needs privacy and wont say if she is at a facility. but the sister is issuing her own new bulletins. Interesting.

No, I see the judge ruled completely in CHO's favor in regards to the tracheostomy and the feeding gastrostomy tube.

Exactly, I agree.

And I also find it rather disturbing how many people are adamant at calling Jahi a corpse and repeating ad nauseum that she is decomposing. I've been truly appalled by the lack of compassion for the family, particularly since attitudes are so very different toward the pregnant woman. There's a lot of people talking out of both sides of their mouths.

FACT: The reason we are calling Jahi a corpse and stating she is decomposing is because it's true. She's been declared dead and has a death certificate to prove it - you are then a corpse.
Like it or not, it's not "calling" it anything but what it IS at this point. Denial doesn't change fact. There has been the link (ad nauseum) for those who will READ IT and understand that yes, indeed it IS decomposing. Choosing to ignore that report doesn't make it untrue.

Opinion: IMO there is a HUGE difference between Jahi and the pregnant woman for one reason (and in my opinion), and one reason only. In the case of a pregnant woman there is a viable life to still potentially be saved. THAT child has rights because the fetus itself has NOT been declared deceased. Now, if that unborn child is declared brain dead, along with the mother, then I would absolutely feel the same way I feel about Jahi.

Comparing the pregnant woman with a viable fetus to Jahi's case is completely absurd.
One has POTENTIAL for a viable life; should sustaining the body for a specific time deem successful.
There is ZERO chance of Jahi "surviving" what her parents are putting her earthly body through.

There is a CHANCE at life with the sustenance of one of these bodies; Jahi's isn't that one.

He refused to rule in accordance with the law though. He could have chose to end it, and yet he didn't. He found something Dolan argued legally relevant.

I see it completely differently than you do.

IMO the trach and g tube were for NW more than Jahi. IMO, NW may equate food with love. If this is what it takes for the grieving mom, so be it. It is not going to change the outcome.

Personally, I am just glad she is out of CHO, so the staff can resume some normalcy. IMO, Jahi is receiving some sort of palliative care at another facility and hopefully not at the detriment of the care givers. The willingness to accept Jahi as a patient and offer care was probably a weighed decision.

Hopefully now, NW can truly begin the process of "letting go". Hopefully the bashing of CHO can stop. JMV

Fetuses have rights? Starting when exactly?
She was 14 weeks along, according to the article and at that time the only thing ascertained was the child had a heartbeat because of the ventilator.
