Before I forget, one resident interviewed on a podcast, I thiiink it was on Anderson or Chris Cuomo, said that when they added the new section, her section of the tower was “swaying”, jmo.
Huh? I believe the building was all built at one time. Was she referring to something else?

I keep saying by the time it’s all said and done, I’ll have oceanfront property. I’m not in a flood zone or even an evacuation zone. But I’m sure at some point, a hurricane will come along and wipe out Siesta Key and Longboat Key condos. People keep right on building out there. I guess the Dolphin Towers debacle wasn’t enough of a wake up call. Sigh.
I hear you and agree.

This needs to be more than a wake-up-call. This needs to be the beginning of the end of the high-rise craze on our country's eroding beaches! I know it is easier said than done, but get those monstrosities repaired or get them evacuated and imploded. How much are those lives worth?
I respectfully disagree.

I want to do something oceanfront when the kids are gone. Couple more years.

That's OK. I've had a bug in my bonnet about beach erosion and construction since the 1960's.....yes I am old.

Hmm. Idk, the impression I got was there was an addition, maybe I misinterpreted. I’ll have to look into this now. I deleted my post in case it is wrong, which it sounds like it may be. Thanks for pointing that out, @GatorFL. :)

I agree that it is not the smartest thing to be building high density accommodation on oceanfront properties. And so much of it. It is far different from building little beach shacks in those locations.

IMO we need to have more respect for the land and its capabilities - of supporting great weight, of erosion, of tidal effects.

Build the highrises further back from the beaches, they will still be able to see the ocean. And allow smaller, lighter, easier-on-the-land construction closer to the shoreline.

I'm still astonished with the speed of the building collapse.

The center and north section fell in less than 6 seconds.

The east section started weaving at the 13 second mark and took 7 seconds to fall.

I don't think the center or north would have come down if just the east segment pancaked

An April letter sent from the president of the Champlain Towers South Condominium Association in Miami said that damage to the doomed building’s basement garage had “gotten significantly worse” since an inspection about two and a half years earlier and that deterioration of the building’s concrete was “accelerating.”

The letter also suggested that millions of dollars in needed repairs had been a subject of frustration among residents. The letter offers a glimpse into the events leading up to the building's deadly collapse last week that has left 11 people dead and over 150 missing.

“We have discussed, debated, and argued for years now, and will continue to do so for years to come as different items come into play,” the letter stated.

The April 9 letter was obtained by USA TODAY from a family member of two building residents missing since Thursday’s collapse. The author, Jean Wodnicki, president of the association’s board of directors, survived Thursday’s collapse, a condo association attorney told the media.

Miami condo deterioration was worsening in April, letter says

A video of one of the apartments in the area of collapse. It gives you an idea of where the woman was who saw the pool deck collapse.

I would like to know if there were any eyewitnesses from the building to the north across 88th st. There was such a large, bright white light(s) flashing on and off from that side of the building throughout the collapse. I can't imagine that no one in that building saw that.

Some of the bright lights seemed to be brief flashes from the interior of 2 apartments. IMO these might have been electrical arcs, part of the process of wires snapping. Or, doomed people may have put lights on to see what was going on, but the power went out...

totally agree. so sudden and so fast. and so total and complete.

See post #538 about the addition.
