Thanks to all fellow posters too. It's almost over. Being together here made it a bit easier to tolerate this horror :loveyou:

Sure has. Thanks everyone, for being here for Cherish and each other.

I still haven't made it all the way thru the ME's testimony. No wonder she asked for a break.

Good summary article here of the facts presented at trial:

http://www.actionnewsjax.com/news/l...ys-of-the-cherish-perrywinkle-trial/699245785
1. The medical examiner said that Cherish Perrywinkle died from being strangled, probably with a piece of clothing. Her injuries were inflicted before she died.
2. Rao, an experienced medical examiner who was conducted thousands of autopsies, unexpectedly asked for a recess during her testimony.
3. Dr. Rao had Donald Smith photographed, and noted injuries to his genitals.
4. The defense rested without calling a single witness.
5. The DNA taken from Cherish Perrywinkle was a 1 in 35 quintillion match to Smith, experts say.
6. In 2015, authorities placed microphones in vents at the Duval County Jail and recorded Smith reportedly discussing the case with a fellow inmate.

“A medical examiner who conducted the autopsy on eight-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle after she was abducted, raped and murdered became emotional and had to interrupt her testimony on Tuesday at the trial of the registered sex offender accused of the crime.

Jacksonville Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Valerie Rao told the court that Cherish sustained severe injuries all over her body from being strangled with a piece of clothing and raped.

Viewing photographs of her battered body in court on Tuesday, she became teary and unable to continue.”

Warning this article is graphic and is distressing. Hopefully he will be on death row.

There were 2 trials that stuck with me due to their brutality and depraved killers. Christianson/Newsom and Pettit family (sp?) Now I have 3.

Bravo, I would have to agree with you. I followed both of those cases and they really affected me. The total senselessness of it all is so difficult to comprehend. There are truly monsters amongst us.

And the endgame -- getting caught and tried in a DP state -- must have been clear to him from the beginning. It mattered no more than his victim did. And nothing has changed, IMO. What a vicious, pointless crime.

They may hang on DP. If they follow the Law and leave out their beliefs they should be able to reach a DP verdict. Nothing redeeming about this guy. Closing should bring it all home. Not sure what the Defense can say other than to pound it into the Jurors how "they" will be "killing" this man. IMO

Oh wow, just replayed the ME's testimony and am totally sickened. I would have absolutely no problem at all at sentencing this pathetic piece of manure to death. None at all.

Yes, I can totally understand the ME having to take a break, I too had to take one.

I'm so speechless and that doesn't happen very often. I am horrified at what Cherish endured.

I will NEVER understand how someone can be so evil to do this to a child.

The only solace I can find in all of this, is that I am quite sure, that he will never see the light of day again, and hopefully, at some point, he will cease to breathe in our space.

If ever there was a person who deserved the Death Penalty, Donald Smith is the Poster Boy.

While we are waiting for the final phase anyone care to share coping strategies you find helpful during and after horrific trials. Exactly how did the stress present?

I'm pretty much desensitized after years and years of following and reading about true crime. Yes, this case is extremely horrible, but I've read about ones much worse. If people become extremely sensitive and stressed over matters like this, they should not be following these types of cases, IMO.

Suggestion for tonight...open up a nice bottle of wine!

Good for you. I had a hot soak too earlier and put on some comfy's. Having a glass of Pinio and watching some Olympics. I have been meaning to get some of those coloring books adults are doing. Thanks for the reminder. Great stress reducer I hear.

I don't think I ever read if there were loved one's at Trial for Cherish? Or killer? Not that I would blame any of them for staying away. Cherish's Dad seems to be a really stand up guy. Spoke with her often and had her for visits. One of the links had referenced her Dad taking her to Disneyland. I'm glad she had some sugar and spice in her short life.

I've been following crime threads for a very long time, for years on Websleuths and I have to admit, I had to take a break today after hearing the testimony from the ME. I've had a couple glasses of chardonnay and am about to go sit in the hot tub for a while. This one will linger on with me for a while and I truly hope this jury will send him to the death chamber.
