I have the urge to eat the rest of the Reese's peanut butter cups from Christmas. I do not have voices telling me to do so.

I think she is saying it the other way around, the voices are speaking first, and become so compulsive it becomes an urge to do as the voices command.

He was demoted first and then discharged.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/esteban-santiago-ruiz-fort-lauderdale-airport-shooting-suspect/

"The Pentagon told the Associated Press that Santiago had gone AWOL several times during his stint with the Alaska National Guard and was demoted - from specialist to private first class - and given a general discharge, which is lower than an honorable discharge. "

Yes, national guard, not active duty. Makes a lot more sense!

Blurting out I am not Jewish does have some looseness in thought process implications.

They do that a lot , blurt something out that has no connection to what is going on around them.
BBM
Could he have been responding to the voices?

I think I am the only one that is freaking out!!

I hope you don't think I was calling you out or something with my post. I was actually referring more to the media and whatnot than to this thread. I was watching various stations earlier and they talked a lot about the gun in checked baggage.

In November 2016, he walked into an FBI office in Anchorage claiming that he was being forced to fight for ISIS and was sent to a psychiatric hospital, officials revealed.
He said he did not want to hurt anyone...

So he does not want to hurt anyone but he is being forced to fight for ISIS. Sounds to me like he was fighting the urge to fight for ISIS.

This is actually really sad isn't it? He fought the voices but they won. It seems like he fought pretty hard too if he was walking into FBI offices and agreeing to be committed.

OMG, you mean like they were shouting "I'm not Jewish!" hoping it would keep him from killing them? How terrifying and horrible for them.

Yes, I hope that is not the case. :(

Does someone have a link about the "I am not Jewish" thing because I haven't seen that anywhere yet.

The laptop guy said that the gunman was quiet.

Shooting Suspect ‘Lost His Mind’ After Tour In Iraq

“Only thing I could tell you was when he came out of Iraq, he wasn’t feeling too good,” his uncle, Hernan Rivera, told the Bergen Record newspaper, as reported by The Associated Press.
Bryan Santiago, the suspect’s brother, said Esteban’s girlfriend had recently called the family to alert them to his treatment, but didn’t provide many details.

PTSD imo stuff emerging

“lost his mind” and was hospitalized at one point for mental health issues. (about 6 weeks ago)

Hospitalization indicates severity of his illness

Because you are not schizophrenic.

I have spent 40 years with a schizophrenic in our family. I know him and his voices and his urges very well. The voices are a constant, even with meds. But they can be managed when he is in a balanced, medicated state. But if he gets stressed and upset or really tired, then the voices have more power over him.

And the voices usually are urging him to do destructive things. Like smash something or say something mean. Luckily they do not usually tell him to lash out physically although that has happened a few times.

The voices are essentially 'urges' because they urge him to do things that his rational mind is resisting.

When discussing whether this was a terrorist attack or not, let's think of the terror everyone in that airport suffered!

This was a life changing day for many people that we will never hear about. Were the people in baggage claim and the airport detained all day to be interviewed?

There are also the poor people who have been caged on the planes ready to take off. Yes, to me it is caged as their rights have been taken from them and they have no options! When is the day going to come that someone on a detained plane goes "crazy" and a drastic event occurs?

It is time for airports to have better security measures. People cannot be held on planes for hours. It is inhuman! Luggage with guns need to be personally claimed at a window. There is always a lost luggage window, so that would be an ideal location. A special luggage tag, held by the owner, would have to be presented.

This incident is unfortunately the test for a follow up copy cat that we will see in the future. While it probably was not planned as such, the fact that it worked, will be used again.

My opinions only.

as of this minute, they are still waiting for buses to remove everyone from the airport (in the 1000-2000). also calls for fire to help wash blood in terminal. such a sad tragedy

so there is no source for the claim that he felt uncontrollable urges to fight for ISIS? ok.

Yes it is sad.

But if he had said he killed his wife and baby because the voices in his head made him do it, would we all be as sympathetic right now? Wouldn't we still hold him accountable for his actions?

so a few times the voices have told him to lash out physically and he wasnt able to resist that? and his condition seems to be related to proper medication? interesting, great info.

so there is no source for the claim that he felt uncontrollable urges to fight for ISIS? ok.

I guess it is in the interpretation. He said he was 'forced' to fight for ISIS. I interpret that as he felt urges to do so.

Tell me how you interpret the statement that he was being forced to fight for Isis? What does that mean?
