GUILTY GA - Ahmaud Arbery, 25, jogger, fatally shot by former LEO and son, Brunswick, Feb 2020 *Arrests* #6

so glad this worked out the way it should have..IMHO.
You just can't treat people like that..it's wrong. That's a hard NO from humanity.
One additional thing I think is really sad though...I think these three men still think what they did was ok and justified. I just don't think the dots connect in their heads on how their actions were WAY out of bounds from the beginning. Even with the citizens arrest statute, it was wrong and what they were doing did not even qualify under that former law.

And btw...did anyone else pick up on the fact the TM's gun was supposedly stolen out of his UNLOCKED truck...the same truck that had a car seat in it...a car seat in the FRONT seat.
wth...just dumb all over.

So vigilante over neighborhood crime yet leave a gun in his unlocked truck.

The car seat is in front because no back seat, just the truck bed.

I like the "bully" example from the prosecutor's closing argument.

3 bullies are following and taunting a kid in the school hallway. They surround the kid against the locker, the kid cannot get away. "Trapped like a rat" is how Greg McMichael would describe it.

So the kid pushes one of the bullies defending himself. The bully then hauls off and hits the kid. The bully cries "self defense" says the kid "pushed me."

The law recognizes that "bullies" goad victims into fighting back all the time then use it as their excuse to hurt the victim. The law doesn't allow it.

The McMichaels bullied Ahmaud, cornered him like the kid against the locker, "trapped like a rat" according to Greg. Then when Ahmaud tried to defend himself Travis shot him and then, like the school bully, Travis cried "self defense."

On top of that, Travis used excessive force to "defend" himself. Ahmaud wasn't even armed with any type of weapon.

The 2 trucks were also used as weapons causing Ahmaud to fear for his life. A vehicle doesn't have to hit you for it to be aggravated assault, you just have to be in fear for your life that it could hit you, that it is coming at you.

They were committing 4 felonies before Travis even pointed the shotgun.

It is so hard for me to muster any kind of kind thought toward TM. But, that said, if he has a pick-up that does not have a second row, he would have to have the car seat in the front. However, having an unsecured gun in his vehicle gives me the sense that he was a serial "looking for trouble in the area" kind of guy. The gun owners that I know don't leave guns in their cars--out in the open or in the glove box. Their guns are secured and accounted for. They don't think it has to ride "shotgun" with them because there could be trouble in any moment. TM's thought process is scary on so many levels.

Probably got his gun hubris from dad.

Travis testified it scared him when his car lights shown on the guy who lifted his shirt and reached for his waistband at the dark house under construction. Travis was scared and ran home to daddy and called the cops. Dad took his gun and went inside the dark house under construction, Travis was too scared and stayed outside.

Greg ran into the house demanding Travis get his gun and truck and chase after the black guy running in the neighborhood.

Greg wanted English to call him for security help on his home. Greg inserted himself into the situation.

As former LE Greg seemed pretty entitled to carry his gun and supervise the neighborhood. Why call LE when he can chase down the guy himself?

A man was just killed, lying in the street and instead of rendering aid Greg turns him over to hunt for a weapon.
Greg had yelled "stop or I'll blow your @#$%& head off."
Described Ahmaud as being "trapped like a rat."
He told LE that "being honest he would have shot Ahmaud himself."
He told Travis that he "had no choice but to shoot him."

Your apt description of Greg and his son, make me so happy to know they are both in jail and will most likely spend the rest of their lives in prison. They really had the unmitigated gall to think they should scream and yell at this black man running down the street to STOP AND HE SHOULD JUST STOP AND LISTEN TO THEM- So frightening to have that thought process and deadly for Ahmaud Arbery

Totally agree.
And yes I stand corrected on the truck no having a backseat. My truck is 25 year old classic and it has a back seat. My kids were always in the back if they were in it...not used to newer trucks not having a backseat.

I gotta say that whenever I click on the link for this thread and I see the GUILTY box, I smile just a bit to know that these monsters are in jail. I would have rather never known the name of Ahmaud Arbery and he live in obscurity but to know that there is a bit of justice that has been meted out makes it feel a little better.

I think like you do- I would rather never heard of Ahmaud Abery- he would be living his life in obscurity- but those two monsters made sure that did not happen and I get a big smile on my face when I think how shocked they are that they have been found guilty and will be spending the rest of their miserable lives in prison. So often we who care, are deprived of seeing justice done, but in this case, thank goodness it was.

just popping in to see if there has been a sentencing date set yet. And to say I appreciate you all that were on this case thread for Ahmaud. I have appreciated watching this trial play out with you and the conversations we've had.

@tlcya - haven't heard anything about a sentencing date. I do know the Judge wants a hearing before that - so don't know "when" that will be.

I can't access the court site - but I'm "thinking" - maybe @sds71 or @watergirl62 do??

me too! I too appreciated all of us going through this trial together. It was one of the better trials I have ever watched thanks to the great prosecutor in this case and a judge who knows how to control his courtroom with a calm demeanor.

“When I saw your articles roll out, I reached back out to [the officer] and tried to get some explanation of what really happened,” Jones wrote in an email reviewed by TIME. “Because what I was reading in the paper wasn’t what he told me. I thank God for The Brunswick News.”

As Hobbs wrote those first words about Arbery’s death, some things just didn’t make sense to him. Among them: why was an alleged burglar, unarmed, shot in the street, in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon? Hobbs asked for a copy of the police report and the 911 calls.

It was Hobbs who published details from a police report about Arbery’s shooting, a document that includes an officer’s summary of the initial statements made by the men involved in the killing and the fact that police were unable to find evidence of a burglary. It was also Hobbs who reported the presence of a third man who chased Arbery, as well as the fact that the elder McMichael worked as an investigator for the district attorney who prosecuted crimes in Glynn County.…

It took a village to get this case to the light of day-- Mr. Hobbs surely played a part in it.

Humanity was served well in the guilty verdict of this case. We have a long way to go, but each case where justice prevails over small minded, bias, stereotyping, and racism is a win for all of us.

Rest easy now AA.

Nope! The Judge wants a hearing before the sentencing happens - but "we" haven't heard anything about any dates yet.... at least I haven't seen anything.
