Attorney who made comments about Ahmaud Arbery's feet quits job | firstcoastnews.com

The attorney whose closing argument sparked racial outrage and offense in the trial of three white men convicted of murdering a 25-year-old Black man has resigned from her position with the National Criminal Defense College.

An attorney who has closely followed the debate, speaking off the record, said, “The College ended up issuing a statement condemning her actions, and then there was a lot of turmoil a back and forth. The faculty split into factions, some believing that what she and her defense team did was very wrong, and others who were saying she was just representing the best traditions of zealously advocating for the client.”

I'll second that. their vision statement, first paragraph of their home page on website:

We envision a world in which all individuals who come in contact with the legal system are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness, regardless of wealth, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, or status in any marginalized group.

Hogue's statements during trial exhibit the exact opposite of this vision. IMO

Broader jury pool sought for Arbery death hate crimes trial

Attorneys in the upcoming federal hate crimes trial of the three white men who chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery want the jury pool to come from an expansive area of Georgia that covers 43 counties, including some that are a four-hour drive from the courthouse where the trial will be held.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys filed a joint motion Thursday in U.S. District Court, with both sides in agreement that casting a wider net for potential jurors will improve the odds of seating an impartial jury. The first trial in Arbery's slaying, seen by many as a reckoning on racial injustice in the legal system, resulted in murder convictions in a state court the day before Thanksgiving.

A joint legal filing by prosecutors and defense attorneys asks a federal judge to seek the jury from the 43 counties that make up the federal court system’s Southern District of Georgia.

She lied anyhow about him being barefoot, because you can clearly see in the video where he's checking out the house that he's wearing running shoes.

She was referring to his bare toes on the autopsy table, photos the jury saw during trial. Makes it even worse. MOO

Preparations for Hate Crime Trial of Three Men Convicted of Killing Ahmaud Arbery Have Begun, and Lawyers Want Jurors from Areas Outside of Brunswick, Georgia

c84eac15c61415095e3b33c26ad09978

In an effort to seat an impartial jury in the Ahmaud Arbery hate crimes trial, both parties have filed a motion in a U.S. District Court to pull jurors from 43 counties from all over the state of Georgia.

The legal motion read, “The parties believe that it is likely that many potential jurors from the Brunswick Division will have experienced sustained exposure to the case and may have formed immutable opinions, in one direction or the other, that will ultimately preclude them from sitting on a jury in this case.”

The prosecution and defense asked the judge to take an additional measure in selecting the jury and submitted a 14-page questionnaire alongside their jury duty notice that will help in identifying anyone that might be excessively biased in the case.

This is a completely different process than the state trial that convicted the men of murder.

Travis McMichael’s attorney, Amy Lee Copeland, is taking it a step further, asking the judge to consider having the trial in a different city with the judicial district. She suggested Savannah or Augusta.

Both requests came less than two weeks from the pretrial hearing for this federal case on Dec. 20.

Who really cares about the hygeine of his toenails, even if he had run barefoot??? Or shown his skin in khaki shorts? It was all about dragging the victim through the mud with racist slave tropes. He had every right to run in a white neighborhood. Maybe he was contemplating buying a house there.

Totally agree.
And yes I stand corrected on the truck no having a backseat. My truck is 25 year old classic and it has a back seat. My kids were always in the back if they were in it...not used to newer trucks not having a backseat.
Older trucks can also be 1 seaters. My husband bought his in '92. It's a small Nissan pickup -pre- Frontier model.

You don't have to literally "break in". You can just walk in.
How is that Burglary when a construction site is unguarded with no doors or fences??? He didn't take anything. And if that's a crime, why weren't the other people who walked into the site charged?

Burglary? HA!

What he was doing didn't even meet the legal definition of trespassing in Georgia.

To be trespassing in Georgia there has to be a sign saying no trespassing and/or the property owner has to tell you to stay off the property, or you have to do $500 or less damage to the property or steal from the property.

Many of us were ticked off about everything you're mentioning, just in real time. Racism was definitely the term that came into my mind. Having grown up in the deep south, I was greatly relived when the guilty verdicts were announced. moo

Just an FYI, you don't need actual breaking for a burglary. If a door is unlocked, and someone opens it with the intent to commit a crime, then it would still be burglary
