Catch up: Here's what the prosecution said during closing arguments

From CNN’s Pamela Kirkland

While we wait for a verdict to be read in court in the federal hate crimes trial of Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William “Roddie” Bryan, here's a recap of what happened when prosecutors presented closing arguments on Monday.

Prosecutor Christopher J. Perras began his closing by going through some of the evidence presented during trial and walking the jury through each charge against the defendants.

Perras argued that the defendants’ claiming Ahmaud Arbery was trespassing doesn’t hold because there had been other instances of trespassing in the neighborhood committed by White suspects that they were not concerned about.

“This wasn’t about trespassing. It wasn’t about neighborhood crime. It was about race. Racial assumptions, racial resentment, and racial anger,” Perras said. “All three defendants saw a young black man in their neighborhood and they thought the worst of him.”
Perras did not show the video of the pursuit of Arbery on February 23, 2020. He did bring up the testimony of Matt Albenze. Albenze, a resident of Satilla Shores testified that he saw Arbery in the house of Larry English the day of the shooting and called the non-emergency police line. In closing, Perras said Albenze had a clear view of Arbery and described his running as “long, looping strides” and “like he was running in slow motion.”

Perras said Greg McMichael only knew he saw a Black man running down the street and played a portion of audio from an interview he had done with investigators saying McMichael didn’t know if Arbery had stolen anything.

Perras claimed the defendants made false statements to the police by saying Arbery had been caught breaking into houses during interviews with investigators. Perras said that the defendants knew what they had done was wrong and did what they could to try to get away with the murder.

Perras also went through some of the evidence previously presented by the prosecution that he said shows the defendants' views on race including the Facebook posts made by Greg McMichael, texts and posts by Travis McMichael, and Roddie Bryan’s use of the word “bootlip” in messages to friends.

"The evidence establishes what was driving the defendant was pent up racial anger," the prosecutor said.

We're minutes away from the 10:30 reading of the verdicts in the federal hate crimes trial of #AhmaudArbery's convicted murderers. Travis McMichael & his father Greg face three charges; their neighbor Wm. Roddie Bryan, two. Jurors deliberated ~ 3.5 hours over 2 days.

US District Judge Lisa Godbey Wood cautions the room to keep the dignity of the courtroom, no matter how they feel about the verdict...and if anyone can't, this is the time to leave. They're bringing in the jury. #AhmaudArbery

The foreperson passes the verdict form to the Marshal. The first unanimous verdict for Travis McMichael is GUILTY and they found all elements. Greg McMichael is also GUILTY of count 1. That's the "interference of rights" count, often called the "hate crime" charge. #AhmaudArbery

The jury was polled individually to confirm \GUILTY verdicts were freely and individually given on all counts. Judge LG Wood commends jurors for steady work on this difficult case. No one has to ask whether you'll step up to do their civic jury: You have. #AhmaudArbery

Jurors are excused. The judge is addressing each defendant as they approach the bench, informing him of post-conviction rights. They have 14 days to file motions; can get another appointed atty if need be; right to appeal. Remanded to US Marshals' custody. #AhmaudArbery

Judge Lisa Godbey Wood commends the attorneys for the skillful prosecution and the zealous defense, saying their work means "No one need wonder whether they got a fair trial and whether their attorneys were skillful. They did, and they are." #AhmaudArbery

Good.

This was a very difficult case to follow because it's so horrifying. The worst part is that these three probably still don't think they did anything wrong.

Oh well, so sad. Enjoy prison!

First time in the state of Georgia someone has been convicted of a federal hate crime! Armaud is in the history books now. A horrible way to get there. Rest easy, Armaud, you didn't deserve to die so needlessly.

I agree with you, I think these three don't think they did anything wrong either.

I'll keep an eye out for a sentencing date.

Sigh of Relief in my neck of the woods. I am hoping this sends a message to all who harm because of the race of a person.

Justice has been served for Mr. Arbery. He never deserved to die but at least these murderers will never walk free again. Rest in Power and Peace, Ahmaud. I am sorry that you ever encountered these animals.

Can't thank you enough @Kristin Esq., for keeping us up to date with this trial. I feel the jury got it right and agree, these men still don't get it. I am sure they feel they've been victimized. Unfortunately that ilk always do.

Tomorrow is February 23, the anniversary of Mr. Arbery's death. Georgia will commemorate tomorrow and February 23 going forward as The Ahmaud Arbery Day.

Georgia designates Feb. 23 as Ahmaud Arbery Day
State Rep. Sandra Scott, a Democrat who represents Clayton County, introduced a resolution designating Feb. 23 "annually in the State of Georgia as The Ahmaud Arbery Day."

I mentioned above but it’s worth repeating: I was horrified that the shooting hit the local news shortly after it happened, but only made the national news after that moron thought the video would vindicate them. If he hasn’t have been so stupid this probably would never have come to light and Arbery’s murder would have been buried on page 12 and justice would not have been served.

Rest Peacefully, Ahmaud.

May the world learn from this and may your death stress the importance of more love and tolerance between all races.
Peace to all who loved you, peace and the memories of your gorgeous smile.

IMO, its very fitting that now the person who described Mr. Arbery as "being trapped like a rat" will be caged like a pet rat.

I missed a few days here and I’m struggling to catch up but wanted to thank @Kristin Esq. and everyone who posted tweets.

I hope English realizes how his failure to secure his property contributed to Ahmaud Arbery’s murder. He expected LE to respond every time he called. Did any of the police suggest he secure the property and put up “no trespassing” signs? Over and over again, he was diverting LE resources that might have been needed elsewhere and, in the background, stirring up his racist neighbors.

I hate that Ahmaud Arbery’s family have to live with the memory of their son, murdered while terrified and trying to escape from racist thugs.

I am so thankful that the judge rejected the plea deals for the McM's, and that they were exposed as the true racists that they denied being. AA's mother went down hard on the DOJ for ignoring the family's pleas against the deals. I can't blame her for being angry. This Federal case was too important to not be heard imo.

Were the defendants in court today? Haven't seen any reports about their reactions.
