I have looked and can not find Mark's obit. My mom died in 1991 and I can still find hers.

I can't find it either. I wonder if it was not publicized for fear his wife and children, if he had either, might be targeted.

Does that mean he was alive when they beheaded him? Oh my, so sad.

I watched an actual newscast on that same station this afternoon/evening, and they seemed to be saying that, because there were no signs anywhere on the body of any trauma, no stabs, no bruising, etc., that basically left only the idea of a fatal head injury. I took it that it could be gunshot, blow to the head, or, yes, death by decapitation ...but I imagine maybe, from the cutting marks, amount of blood loss, etc., they may have been able to rule that last out. (I hope so.)

Not sure if toxicology would be complete yet?

Do not sleuth friends and family members, please.

I have a friend who is in LE here in Covington (about 1/2 hour from Lake Oconee), and we were talking about this case yesterday. He knows Sheriff Sills personally, and said if anyone can get to the bottom of this, Sills can. He said Sills is a "bulldog" and will never give up on this until he solves it... I hope they find out what happened to this poor couple, for the family's sake. I have several friends who live on the lake, and they're pretty freaked out.

All comments are just my personal opinion.

Welcome to Websleuths, Dr.Watson! :websleuther:

As it happens, I couldn't find one either. Not sure how significant that may or may not be, though.

I admit I'm not the sluethiest sleuth, and it might not even be related, but I can't find any info on Mark Desmond's killer either.

Some court docs have been posted and you can find him using the offender search at the Georgia Department of Corrections web site. It indicates he is still incarcerated.

Interesting to note he was killed on is 47th birthday.

Hmm, I am wondering if anyone noticed a boat near by during the daytime hours..just sitting in the same spot (probably wouldn't seem out of place...I would naturally assume it was someone fishing)? My Dad was an avid boat person and I spent many years out on the lake with him, even overnight. Lakes can be tricky...even when you know them like the back of your hand. At night it is pitch black and you can run into the danger of running into stumps...even sandy areas. Usually the only landmark we could identify was the local state park and that was b/c it was a well lighted area. Most times we used spotlights if we were moving fishing spots, but usually set up in one spot until daylight. You would think someone would notice someone out on the water with a spotlight approaching their dock.

Seems like the killer may have waited nearby and had that route mapped out like the back of their hand...probably traveled it many times during the daylight hours. Maybe someone now remembers a boat that seemed to be around very often, but wasn't necessarily a regular before.

I wish the residents on Lake Oconee would organize this weekend and search the lake's shore for a body. That could be done while in their boats.

I'm finding posts of an Olympic canoeist named Russell Dermond competing in 1960 and 1956. DOB is listed as 12/31/36 from New Jersey. Has a DOB been released? Coincidence?

Edited to add: the ages wouldn't add up. Probably nothing here but an uncanny coincidence.

In my humble opinion, i dont think it will help to search the woods or shoreline... If they killed Mrs. Dermond then I fear that she - and the other "evidence"- are both at the bottom of the lake near the dam where it's about 100 feet deep...

Sheriff says they don't believe Mark's murder has anything to do with his dad's murder and mom's abduction.

Replied once already to your post -- just picking it up again to say: Just now on Macon's channel 13WMAZ, some interesting coverage -- it won't be posted yet but y'all can check later, here is the home page: www.13wmaz.com

One thing said: Sheriff said they have "no reason to believe" the recent events have anything to do with Mark Dermond's murder -- but he has obtained MD's case file from Atlanta.

He will be 89 next month. That makes his DOB June 1925?

Oh, I thought Grasshopper was onto something. I don't have the heart to delete my post and bow down.

no, the article said that because there was no other trauma on the body I think, so had to assume head trauma
