Were the security cameras not functioning for quite some time? Or were they just recently disabled? If recent, could be by someone familiar with the residential area, or working on the grounds.

Clearly someone who hated him. I believe he was targeted. I believe out of pure anger would this occur.

Had he become a little grumpy in his older years? So their house was in tip top shape. They like things in order...perfect. I know older folks in my neighborhood that get angry if our stroller slides off the sidewalk onto their grass. Oh...and don't even let a little dog come near their manicured yard. So while I am certainly not saying that Mr D was this way...could he have been having an issue with someone in the community? That person finally snapped, disabled the cameras and went after them?

Perhaps when Sills said he didn't think Russell was killed at the scene, he meant in the garage specifically. As many of us have stated, it seems quite implausible that the murderer would go out of his way to deliver the body back to the home undetected.

Maybe Russell was killed within the house and the killer had time to clean obssessively. After all, Sills has made quite a point in the media to stress how pristine the house was, to the point that he mentioned it again to say it appeared as though no one lived there and that he had never been in a house so clean. And it was literally days before anyone discovered the scene.

I'm curious about the couple's schedule too. Did Shirley turn in early, before dark even, while Russell came to bed later, locking up the house and garage before coming to bed? Did Russell rise first in order to get in his long walks? Is it possible he was met by someone right outside his door, bludgeoned or shot, and quickly dragged back in to the garage? If it were light by the time Shirley awoke, it might make sense the killer took her with him instead of staying at the scene. While he had the cover of darkness and a largely windowless (?) garage in which to deal with Mr. dermond, it is most likely Mrs. dermond would be within the house. Being on a lake, the house would have windows, large windows, to enjoy the view. Pulling shades or curtains might attract attention.

Either way, I don't think it's a coincidence that Sills keeps mentioning the cleanliness of the house. It clearly struck him as strange.

Is there not reward money for info leading to answers in this case? Given a crime of this nature, prominent community, missing spouse...I'm surprised reward money hasn't been offered.

Would it not take more than one person to do this? I can't imagine all of this being carried out by a single person. Someone knows. Money could make them start talking.

Here is a link to a particularly interesting article about the cartel activities in certain areas, particularly Oconee County. It states the activities are so significant that LE routinely works with the FBI on cases in the area, although they rarely receive press because of the nature of the crimes.

The most interesting part of the article is when the interviewed detective states they have seen a drop in drug trafficking along the 20 mile stretch of interstate in Oconee. Because there is such a heavy police presence along the highway specifically targeted at catching traffickers, he surmises the drop in arrests signals the criminals have found an alternative way to move the drugs along that short 20 mile stretch.

It's no wonder the FBI was immediately involved in the Dermond murder. They have already been investigating cartel activity in the area for over five years.

I don't think he was brought back to the house dead. More likely to believe whoever did this carjacked Mr Dermond somewhere else and forced him to drive home. Once they used him to get pass the security gate and inside the enclosed garage they could have killed as soon as he stepped out of his vehicle.

There isn't a security gate though. The front entrance to the property is wide open. It has no gating around the subdivision. No key pad required to get in onto the property.

I think they were both already at home when this happened in the garage of their home. A lot of people don't lower their garage doors especially if they feel they live in a very safe neighborhood. If they had been out in town someone would have seen them out.

I think the perps live right in the community and that is why they would know their way around so well........even in the dark. It had to be someone very familiar with the layout of the grounds.

I agree with the Sheriff and this all happened between late Friday night and sometime in the wee morning hours of Saturday while everyone else in the subdivision was sleeping.

Someone was up and I still believe they were living right there.

IMO

Great article, and I'm sure this is happening anywhere near interstate highways to some degree, but this story is about a section of South Carolina near 85 - Oconee and Pickens county are near Greenville, SC and about 3 hours away from Reynolds Plantation.

Lake Oconee is in Putnam County, Georgia, near Eatonton and Greensboro - easy to get it all confused.

Thank you for the clarification. There is also an Oconee County in Georgia, around thirty miles from Putnam County. I did think the reference to i85 was strange because I did not see it on the map of that area. It never occurred to me South Carolina would have a county by the same name. Thanks for correcting that!

Something didn't work, Carolinapeach.

To post photos, click go advanced, click the paperclip, choose the photo from your computer, click open then upload. After the file loads, click the paperclip again & the file should be listed, click it & it should show up in your post.

I hope this is correct. Can someone direct us the where the process is explained in the forum?

I thought we had been told there was a security guard at the gate 24/7? Isn't that correct?

If there was, you can be assured that every guest that was allowed to enter would be written down somewhere. We have visited gated communities and we were required to wait while they verified we were allowed in...then they registered our names, vehicle and license plate in a book, along with who we were there to see.

I don't know that you could decapitate someone and clean it up to the point that is was totally undetectable. The blood would be everywhere....all over the criminal/s, all over the walls and floors, sinks, tubs, etc. You might could take 24 hours to clean it up, but luminol would lite that place up like a Christmas Tree....

This method will work, nozme. I read about this story from my local paper yesterday. I'm horrified. I wonder if the victim was decapitated because a bullet is still in the head. Sorry to be so graphic.

Greetings Sleuthers, first post after reading through the Thread. Such a strange and horrific case. Lots of compelling ideas so far. My time is limited today so this one quick post for now.
It seems the likely time frame in the murder (from what is public now) is Friday 5/2 (after newspaper delivery) until sometimes Saturday 5/3. Mr. D's body was found Tuesday 5/6. I am wondering about the weather conditions during the time 5/2 - 5/6 in the area of the home. We have had several periods of rain recently. Is it possible that blood, tracks, etc. been washed away by rainfall. Maybe someone local can recall the weather for that time. Knowing this will likely not give ultimate answers on what happened, but may be a factor on why blood or tracks are not present. Just something that ran through my mind as I was reading.
