Just reading along and I started thinking.

If the Sheriff thought this was some threat to the community wouldn't there be warnings out to the community at large???

You'd think, honeybun1807. From my experience, warnings are only given to GA communities by LE/DNR when a rogue black bear is sighted roaming in the neighborhood..jmo

Imo, if Sheriff Sills truly believes that there is no threat to the community. He would release the FBI BAU2 psychological behavioral profile of the unknown suspect/s...jmo

Yes, absolutely I would be on edge if I lived in the area. I mean I'd probably be seeing all sorts of things that I could imagine into being a head - thus Sheriff Sills and his comments regarding probably getting a lot of calls this holiday weekend and there would be someone there to check out any suspicious findings.

Earlier poster said she questioned some people at the lake if they were worried and she said they weren't worried at all. . . . I don't understand that at all. Kind of like maybe they're sticking their heads in the sand.

Until the head is found, I think the people closest to this case will be affected negatively. Maybe the perp did take the head for self-preservation, "I'll give up the head if you take the death penalty off the table." ?? No clue. Dahmer kept his victims' body parts because he couldn't bear to part with them. I really don't think this is the type of perp we are dealing with in the Dermonds' case though.
The few people I've talked to, while out and about in the area, believe the Dermonds were targeted; a hit. I guess that makes them feel safe and they have nothing to worry about? I think many have only read and seen the articles and news broadcasts readily available to them. They aren't looking for updates every day like I am. I am worried about it and that's why I signed up here. To me, they are sticking their heads in the sand but that's JMO. Different coping mechanisms, I suppose...

I sure hope so but I also wonder if they hold back as not to create panic in the community. I wish we knew more.

I am really behind on reading the posts! I apologize if this has been mentioned already... I thought it was strange that the deceased son was not mentioned in Mrs. Shirley's obit. Did anyone else think that was strange? I wonder who wrote the obit...one of their children? I wonder why they would leave off a sibling.

I don't post much but this one is a doozie! I have relatives that have a lake house on Lake Sinclair so I am a little familiar with that area (although I have never been to Lake Oconee).

Politicians don't like crime prevention warnings...that makes their city/county/state look bad...and we all know who/what controls the politicians.

As for the families I know who live in gated communities at Lake Oconee, they are living with the security alarms on all day and all night.

Oh! And I had my screen name WAY before this case. Sorry it contains the "g" word!

If the will is written so as to split equally among all the children and if there is plenty to inherit, well, how odd would that look?

RE: RP & GW Community; 'No Worries'..

JMO, After the Meredith Hope Emerson abduction/murder/decapitation my community was initially in a state of shock. The ms media in conjunction with local/state LEAs and local Churches attempted to minimize the dark reality of the tragedy, imo.
The following Sunday, I attended the Church with the largest congregation of locals; Appalachians and gated community members. The theme of the Pastor's sermon was; 'Rumors and Speculation'. The motive for this sermon theme was to quell the community's fears and convince them that the horrific crime was only an anomaly and could not happen to them..imo

After the service was over, I approached the Pastor and told him, "It is not Rumor, nor is it Speculation"!

Ironically, a deacon from this church had given serial killer Gary M. Hilton, a love offering of $50.00 for food and gas only days before MHE's abduction..

:thud: People never cease to amaze me at their naivete at trusting complete strangers. My father was one of the worst. He was taking in prisoners newly released from prison because they had no place to go and homeless people who wandered into town.

The media and LE who try to minimize crimes such as the Dermonds don't make much sense to me either. I understand not wanting to set off uncontrollable panic, but telling people it's an isolated incident and don't panic isn't the best route either.

Carolinapeach, in the past decade, I can only think of one example where the Sheriff gave the community a warning that there was an active predator/spree/serial killer in their midst. This was the July 4th weekend in Gaffney, SC, 2009. The perp; a recently released prisoner(violent criminal) on a drug binge, was killed by LE in a shootout after an aware citizen's 911 call alerted them to his location....

Good to see you AbbyG :)

Yes that whole leaving the murdered son's name out of the obit caused quite a bit of conversation. I think it may have been in the last thread though. It was definitely noticed and caused remark.

Most of us are used to seeing the some mention of deceased children such as was preceded in death by son Mark - or some such. I do not think we ever really reached a satisfactory conclusion on why that was the way things handled or who made that choice.

Great point, Foxfire. I remember this as I am originally from upstate SC. I also remember the Gaffney Strangler. I was very young when that happened but we were aware then too. Knowledge is power, yes?
IMO.

Don't you imagine the children know what the will says?

My guess is this will is going to be sealed so the public cannot find out the financial facts.

And it still amazes me that no one has come forward to raise the reward money! This is a family of three successful grown adults who by all means have access to chip in to increase the reward money!

I am positive if the tables were turned, their parents would give every penny they had to find the murderers! What is the hold up here???

I would expect that there would be the traditional "reading of the will". The sale of their prior restaurant investments may have changed the texture of accounts "receivable" to the estate to be handled etc.

I'm freaked out and I'm far away in New York.

I'm about an hour and a half away from Oconee and I'm freaked out too!
We had lunch with our family from that area last Sunday and I was asking all kinds of questions and even followed up with emails.
They really aren't scared at all and couldn't attribute it to anything other than, "well, they weren't from around here" and "I'm sure it is the result of something related to when they lived in NJ".
They think it's a crazy situation, but they aren't scared or freaked out and assume it was on a one time thing.

Paid to kill or debt not having to be repaid or financial scam not being outed or lawsuit threatened being avoided ...anyone else have other ideas on the possibilities ?

Sent from my SCH-S720C using Tapatalk 2

If I may add, all of the above including retaliation.

A person/s known to the couple and/or their relatives. This horrific act affected their relatives immensely. They sent a message of what they are capable of doing.

:welcome5: Glad to have you posting. How are your relatives taking the news about the Dermonds? Worried or feel the Dermonds was targeted specifically?

I wonder about the deceased son being omitted from the obituaries, or barely mentioned. I kind of figured with him having drug problems he might have alienated his brothers and sister by being a user and all the drama that comes along with people who have drug addictions. I'm sure the Dermonds loved him very much and that might have caused some discord among the siblings who felt the parents should have booted him to the street. Just a thought. What are your thoughts?

Again, glad you're here abbyGATOR! :seeya:

I don't know. Good question though. Things were as they should be... ?

Thank you Xara! Keep us updated. I keep searching the net for updates or breaking news on the case. It's very frustrating. I know it takes for LE to get their :rubberducky: :rubberducky: :rubberducky: in a row and especially a paper trail. Patience is not my strong suit. :tantrum:
