It does sound a bit odd...

Dermond family friend Len Nelson said he drove to the vigil with the couple’s next door neighbor.

"She's got to get over it, she's just got to get over it security around her home. It’s tough, it’s tough,” Nelson said.

The comment about "so sweet" also seems a bit odd. But odd comments aren't evidence for charges kwim? I will say something about the rural South....a lot of folks don't like their neighbors. Kind of funny since there is often a lot of space between houses, but nevertheless.

I wouldn't expect them to charge him for the odd comment but it wouldn't have hurt to ask him how he knew the "horrific nature of how they died" when LE didn't know she was dead, hadn't found her yet or know how she died JMO.

One clean cut? Sounds like someone that has had deer hunting experience. Course that doesn't narrow it down much in rural Georgia.

could be a butcher or a surgeon

Absolutely, in my opinion.
Perhaps, they know who this man is, or perhaps there is another person, as well, besides this man.
Maybe this person wore unique clothing as well, that could determine where he worked perhaps? (uniform?)
Many questions due to the fact he said "We'll just leave it at that".
IMOO.

you know, another thought or angle, if this guy knew there was some sort of description of him, he might or someone else involved, might come forward to rat, SS has been saying someone knows something and many times a solved case takes someone tipping them off,

Also still confused on the GW security and the Dermond's security, does anyone know if it was BOTH that had been tampered with or disengaged, seems like the dermonds was tampereed with 2 weeks prior to the murder or discovery, which would be around easter and then the GW went out on the 28th possibly, according to the no name poster here..............?? And then the nieghbor said THEY died, the dermonds said seemed resigned that SD was dead, this is all just very strange to me

snipped:

BBM< and snipped from a MSM article from almost a year ago:

Friday, May 16, 2014 Investigators: Shirley Dermond died of blunt force trauma
http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/source-investigators-find-body-putnam-county/nfyK5/

Sills says most killings usually involve some kind of criminal activity but that doesn't appear to be the case with the Dermonds, someone he calls an all-American couple.[/B]
______________________________________

"Imo, there is no such thing as the perfect crime, only an imperfect/incomplete investigation"... "How can an investigation be thorough when all available investigative resources are not being utilized; the GBI"? jmo

Foxfire, that quote, if the Dermonds weren't into criminal activity, if the Dermonds weren't robbed for drugs (thinking not due to the cleanliness), if the Dermonds weren't a mob hit (something from their past), SD wasn't raped (that we know of)

what does that leave us with??? Someone they know or someone SS knows? Seriously, what's left? And why kill them and lead or confuse the investigation??

And this could have still been a hired hit? But WHY?? What did they have someone wanted? What is it that SS thinks the lawn man POI was possibly looking for? Is that what I read early? SS said someone was looking for something and they need to match up someone to something they have on file or whatever?

Right now, we’re looking at people who used to live in the neighborhood prior to the murders.” al queda?
Authorities are also working to establish the identity of someone who was seen walking in the couple’s yard during the time period that authorities believe the murders occurred.
Sills said the person who saw that individual was unable to provide authorities with a description.I thought earlier SS stated "we'll leave it at that, as if he had more on this poi and just wasn't going to tell

Maybe they couldn't give a good description but were able to tell that the man did more than walking while in the yard? IOW SS wouldn't be holding out on the description of the man, but holding out on his actions.

FROM WGXA NEWS: Russell and Shirley Dermond were brutally murdered a year ago. With no suspects and no leads, their killer remains a mystery. One man hasn't given up hope and remains Determined for the Dermonds. Monday at 10pm on FOX24 and 11PM on ABC16.

I do not get this channel so hopefully someone who does can update or maybe it will be posted on the news site after it airs.

A Year Later, Putnam County Sheriff Still Baffled by Dermond Murders

Story Published: May 4, 2015

It's been a year since a quiet community in Putnam County was rocked by the murders of 88-year-old Russell Dermond and his 87-year-old wife Shirley Dermond. And Sheriff Howard Sills said they are no closer to finding those responsible for killing the elderly couple than they were a year ago.

“We are unfortunately, as far as developing a suspect, not much further than we were 10 months ago,” Sills said. “I’m not going to tell you we don’t have some people that we have some interest in.”

The couple was killed in May 2014 in the Great Waters community, part of the Reynolds Plantation Development on Lake Oconee.

88-year-old Russell Dermond's body was found by friends in the garage of the couples million dollar home.

“His body was lying on the garage floor minus its head,” Sills said.

It seems that SS is putting much more credence in the sighting of the man on the property than previously. Maybe he thinks that the man was waiting for the boat.

SS said that the killer was looking for something in the house and when they catch him they have evidence that will match up. Maybe fingerprints?

This has been discussed before but do we know more about if the killer came or left by the unlocked front door? How did the people who found Mr. D get in/ Did they have a key, did they come in the front or back? Was the garage door up?
I don't think this really matters but I don't recall that we knew that the couple who found Mr. D. were the hosts of the derby party.

bbm: I was wondering, too, about whether the garage door was up. Sure seems like that was discussed (and answered) somewhere way back but I haven't found it yet. I'm wanting to say it WAS up, but that's just my memory of earlier discussion and it may be way wrong.

Yep, I think that the friends who found the scene were the Derby Party hosts IS new info for us. Something else I'm thinking is new, bbm in the quote::

...His wife, who was not beheaded, died from blows to the skull, wounds possibly inflicted with “something like a hammer,” Sills said. ...
http://www.macon.com/2015/05/02/3726718/new-details-as-mystery-reigns.html#storylink=cpy

Isn't this the first we've heard about a hammer-like weapon?

Something else I am wanting to know -- asked it way early on but I don't think the info has ever been forthcoming from any of our sources: Did both Russell and Shirley still drive?

I do remember that Shirley was catching a ride with someone else to bridge, I think it was...but just wonder if she still did drive some -- say, a quick run to the store. With her being up and dressed while Russ was not dressed to go out, thought crossed my mind that she might have been out (or been headed out) briefly for a quick errand.

Been trying to figure out how to say this without sullying the good name of a person who attended the vigil but seemed to know that Shirley would be found dead and "they" were killed in a horrific manner.... The gentleman was probably just overcome with emotion and said what everyone was thinking, that Mrs. D was dead and may have been murdered in the same manner as her husband.......BUT, if I were SS, I would be wanting to know more about this.... especially since the gentleman had a construction company and one would assume, access to any kind of concrete blocks that he needs... is resident of GW and can come and go without notice... and lives on the golf course.... and his wife is deceased so he probably lives alone so one one would know when he comes and goes...I don't want to jump to conclusions, just noting facts.

Isn't this the first we've heard about a hammer-like weapon?

When I read this article:

Snipped By Me:
"Her husband’s head, neatly severed,..."
http://www.ajc.com/news/news/sheriff-elderly-couples-murders-still-a-mystery/ngKyD/

Coupled with "something like a hammer",

I thought about a hammer and a sickle.

A sickle is sharp! A hammer can be used as a deadly weapon, as well.

Just throwing that out there...
Not to say there is a communist affiliation of any sort,
just putting words/items together to form a thought process
of what the murder weapons could have been.

IMOO.

They had 2 cars, I would assume so, he was at publix, they went to church regularly

Good thoughts Damifino, on your earlier post in regards to this

Now why would a neighbor with a construction co kill them? Not being coy, seriously. Who else could be involved and why?

ANd then there is the security system issues

No idea why.. If we knew why, we would probably know who. At this point, all ideas are on the table. It could be anybody.
