"While Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) primarily affects the lungs, severe cases can lead to heart failure and even cardiac arrest due to the virus's ability to damage blood vessels and cause fluid buildup in the lungs, leading to shock and organ failure.'
That doesn't discount what I said. None of that PROVES the cardiac arrest was CAUSED by hantavirus.

ETA, I need to go back and listen to the press release again. Linked to hantavirus is not caused by hantavirus. I need to check exact words.

What’s the chances of finding out how often pest control was there? I’d like to know if it was monthly or random. If they hadn’t been in awhile, the abundance of droppings may have gone unnoticed considering the size of the house.
Me too.

Early this evening I posted quite a few questions about the pest control connection that day.

they say in the press briefing that she had a cardiac condition caused by the Hanta virus which they say is rare.
Yes. I believe the term the ME used was either Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome or Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome.

"Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a rare viral disease that can damage your heart, lungs and other organs."

"It progresses quickly and can be fatal."

"Another name for HPS is hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS)."

From a 1993 article about the Mammoth victim. Article says her cabin was infested with rodents, but other articles said it wasn't.

Messier’s case illustrates how rapidly the disease, which often begins with fever, headache and breathing difficulty, can quickly escalate into a life-threatening illness

Messier, who was studying birds at the Valentine Ecological Reserve, sought treatment for flu-like symptoms last Wednesday. Rutherford said that after being seen at a hospital she went back to her research station.

She returned to the hospital the next day and was flown to a Reno hospital, where she died Friday. Rutherford said that the cabin she lived in was infested with rodents.
"Infested" could mean almost anything. A cabin in the woods is going to have "guests" no matter what is done.

I remember when that disease was first identified. People were just as terrified as they were during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, or the beginning of COVID.

So how long would he have had alzheimers before it was advanced? Wish a reliable expert could weigh in. I genuinely have questions because I know people in their situation
I fear becky may not have known how advanced his disease was
Was he even seeing a medical professionali assume she would have experienced the onset, but maybe it was just that quick or she was too overwhelmed to notice how bad it was. No sane person would take that challenge on without professional help.
Alzheimer's, and other dementias, present differently in every patient.

Here's an old "Forensic Files" episode about hantavirus. No, no crimes were committed, but plenty of forensic investigation was done to figure this out.

@tomstrees was the first person to mention hantavirus!! (at least, that I saw). It was Thread #2, post #911 on Wednesday. And then several of us responded. I responded post #915.

So, I'll give credit where credit was due, it was @tomstrees

I did make another post about it this morning, but it was only b/c of what TomsTrees mentioned two days ago.
Yes I saw the one this morning, very nice to give credit where its due. Good thinking on @tomstrees part. I'm not a stranger to hantavirus we've had it up here in Alberta, Canada. but Its not something I would have thought of. Sometimes the simplest things get overlooked, like what was the pest person there for? That might have given us a clue.

p.s. A hemorrhagic fever that killed a number of American troops during the Korean conflict is also believed to have been caused by a hantavirus. In this case, the main cause of death was kidney failure, and dialysis was unavailable. (Warning: This video does have some very graphic footage.)

I actually looked up how many Hantavirus cases in Alberta, Canada

"From 2014 to 2018, 16 cases of hantavirus were confirmed in Alberta residents. Of those cases, one was fatal. There have been two cases of hantavirus confirmed in Alberta this year." (article written in in June, 2019) more cases than I would've thought! Simple precautions can reduce the risk of hantavirus | Alberta Health Services

Yes I remember we had a bit of a scare, everyone was cleaning everything during that time. I cant remember why it was such a big deal back then? Thing is if you lived anywhere near a reveen, or a field, mice could get into your house. They supposedly can get in a hole the size of a pencil ?? I hate mice, Those little tiny things freak me right out, and when you get one .. game over. They reproduce like 10x a year and have up to 6 baby mice at a time, they increase exponentially, doesn't take long to get infested. you don't even need to be infested just sweeping up their droppings makes it airborne.

Where did you hear that? I listened and the Medical Examiner said "Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome", then later she described how a victim of this disease will experience sudden fluid in the lungs which could have caused her collapse.

No mention that she had a heart attack!

ETA: not saying she was sweeping her shed, but that she might have cleaned something up with mouse or rat droppings.
It sounds like (from Youtube video of woman who contracted hantavirus, and survived), she only needs to come into contact with the droppings. This woman who survived hantavirus only retrieved her cat bowls from a mouse-dropping-infested chicken coop. she wasn't even cleaning them up, but she still came into contact with the droppings (to be fair, she said she was on her hands and knees though, so her face would've been closer the ground).
This is a really good video about hantavirus, because it shows how quickly the onset could be. and how severe the symptoms are. Severe back and neck pain can also be a symptom. She also said she was hallucinating at one point - that might explain why Betsy didn't call 911. It must've been sudden. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Betsy's last phone call to her massage therapist?

).
Yes, that's a different strain, found in Europe and Asia (per CDC

I listened to the press conference on the way home from work. Glad we finally have factual information to discuss, the baseless speculation drove me to take a break from reading here for a while.

Hantavirus wasn't even in the realm of possibilities, who would have even considered that. But did I read somewhere that a pest control company had been making bi-monthly calls to the home recently? Was it for rodent control?

The ME explicitly said her cause of death was Hantavirus disease. Not "with" it, it caused her death.

No one knows.
Dealing with a rodent problem has to be more intensive than that tho, have to check traps daily, not every 2 weeks!

Wow 20 different strains?

The hantavirus genus was conceived in 1983 and currently, the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses recognizes more than 20 unique species within the hantavirus

and from the same article :
The incubation period of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome has been determined to be between 9 and 33 days with a median time of symptom onset of 14 to 17 days post-exposure, although incubation periods between 46 to 51 days have been reported .

Not if you are refilling bait boxes! We have that service at work and they come monthly in winter, bi-monthly in warmer months.

They block entry points, remove food sources, and remove places they live like a pile of leaves or any cluttery spot. They put out traps and/or poison. and come back to monitor.
No traps for me, if I see a mouse, he's getting the green poison that shrivels them right up in no time. No mercy.

“Unforgiven star Hackman may have wandered around the sprawling 9000 square foot home, lost and confused, for seven days - without his partner of three decades by his side to feed and care for him, or look after their three treasured dogs,

Left to fend for himself and with his wife's body decomposing in their bathroom, Hackman, who was already in 'very poor health' went without food.

An autopsy showed his stomach was empty at the time of his death.

Hackman was found dead with his cane and sunglasses by his side in a room just off the kitchen following an apparent fall - hinting he may have been on his way out of the home before his weak heart gave in”

but she said he wasnt dehydrated, so does that mean he could have been eating before?
how long does it take for your stomach to empty? or he must have been drinking something?
