Sometimes you wish you never watched a press conference. This is one of those times.

Heartbreaking to learn how and when she died and that Gene was there alone, without the one that took such good care of him, for what must have seemed to him like an eternity, if he even realized she was gone at all.

i dont think he knew at all
but to me the more shocking part is
the dog would have been throwing a fit in the kennel and he didn't let it out

IMO … For Betsy, they said the last proof of life was on 2/11. That doesn’t mean she died on the 11th. The media is jumping on the 11th. She could have died on the 18th.

Yeah I’m guessing she thought she just had flu when in fact it was more serious. IMO.
Does it mean the mice droppings/urine were inside the main house? If so, how did Gene avoid getting sick too?

Confirmed Alzheimers? I missed the first part of the conference

Someone earlier in the thread brought up hantavirus. I thought that was ridiculous-- and since I live in NM, I'm going to learn all I can.

The pup may have been calm too, you never know though. Also, I had a crate for my dogs and it was very difficult for me to open. I just left the door open rather than locking it. Maybe Gene wasn’t able to open it?

Also, those pills scattered over the bathroom counter and the heater crashed on the floor. Could have been Hackman looking for his medication since they were BP meds.
Good points!

Heartbreaking.

Poor Gene rambling around the house for a week. Poor dog in a crate, likely realizing B's death nearby, while also hearing Gene moving around but nobody coming to the rescue/release. And the other dogs living amongst this too.

😭

Very advanced Alzheimer's and very advanced heart disease for Gene. Hantavirus for Betsy. But where she was exposed was not clear. They said the Main House showed no evidence of rodent infestation, but that another building on the property did-- but that was not gone into.

WOW.
Basically you need to clean up all droppings etc with goves and keep your outside spaces sealed up so they cant get in.
I live in NYC and dealing with pests is a nightmare, but ours dont have hanta virus

If she was responsible for the cleaning (which I imagine, given he had advanced Alzheimer's, she was) she would be the one more likely to be coming into contact with rodents and their detritus.

Even just disposing of mice from traps or cleaning droppings can be a risk. Once stuff gets stirred up, and you breathe it in, that's all it takes.

I think they may be running into a liability issue here with the extermination company
although with Betsy's own mother with dementia dont know who would actually sue.

Do we know how active she normally was digitally?

Also Hantavirus usually happens from interaction with outdoors.
even your shoes coming inside would track in traces

Yes a scan of his brain showed he had advanced Alzheimers.

If only, if only....she had sought med attention. She was only 63.

Yes, If only. She was possibly always more concerned about his health than her own considering their situation. Maybe he made her promise to allow him live out his life in their home.

Did this include toxicology reports or it was just the autopsy?
Are they still running toxicology?

And that's hard. You live somewhere backing onto wilderness or in a rural area, and you're going to have to deal with rodents. We've never had them living in urban areas (and we have lived in some real dumps, five star crap heaps), but when we lived in a rural area in the central west of NSW? We had rats literally chewing through our kitchen walls. And we had cats who were in that room happy to catch rodents. Didn't deter them.
