Let's say they'd both been dead for 2 weeks, how did the dogs survive? They must have had access to water somewhere.

The responding deputy believes the heater “could have fallen in the event the female abruptly fell to the ground.” The pills from the bottle were “scattered on the counter-top,” it says. A German Shepherd was found about 10 feet from her in a closet in the bathroom.

Hackman was found dead in a mud room near the kitchen, according to the warrant. It states that the deputy believes he may have suddenly fallen.

Two other dogs were found alive on the property; one was in the bathroom with Arakawa and the other was outside the home

Re: the portable heater. If it was an electric one, it wouldn't be a CO hazard, just a possible fire hazard.

I am thinking the door found open may have been opened by one of the surviving German Shepherds.

Did they have reasonable/reliable cell phone coverage at their property?

MOO.

unfortunately, looks like this one is going to need more time to figure out. I have thoughts but there are 50! different scenarios because of how scattered the scene is. the reports are everywhere on this one. first it was just him, her and dog dead, now it's multiple dogs are on property or found their way out, relatives of deceased commenting on possible reasons of death and cops now saying it is suspicious?

I guess the main possibilities at the moment would be:
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Overdose / Gene not having appropriate care as a result
- Tragic accident in which both had accidents simultaneously, or as a result of rushing to get help for the other?
- Joint suicide? (very unlikely IMO)

But, why has a relative publicly commented on nature of death so early in investigation for the police to come out today and say it looks suspicious? Maybe it's me but it seems very odd.

I think because TMZ are ruthless and will squeeze a comment out of any grieving family member they can. IMO.

I think Gene fell and hit his head and died, his wife in grief took an overdose of pills, the dead dog ate one or more of the pills that were by her on the floor, the other dogs didn’t

For those of you who are younger than others here, please look into his amazing wealth of work (his movies). He was a giant in the film industry.
A few of my personal favorites are:
1967: Bonnie and Clyde
1971: The French Connection
1974: Young Frankenstine
I loved him in Hoosiers, 1986

Dead dog was in its kennel. The question is, was the kennel secured or open?

I think it is fine for the police to say it is suspicious since they don't know what happened and at the same time say no evidence of foul play. They aren't incompatible. I don't know what the family is saying.

The wife could of had health issues or was feeling unwell, and went to take medication from the bathroom, but suddenly died, knocking everything over as she fell. Gene unfortunately after not seeing her for sometime, attempts to find her and has a fall he can't recover from. As someone suggested, one of the dogs manages to open the door, jmo

Dog likely died of starvation then, would suggest they have been dead quite a while

Certainly possible. Autopsies will hopefully show cause of death for each. Will they bother to do a necropsy on the dog? I guess we will see if they think its necessary.

A German shepherd was found about 10 feet from her in a closet in the bathroom. This is different to the earlier reports.

Or the other way round - Gene went to see where she was in the house and fell. But then he should have an injury from falling. Looks like pills could be involved for her and the one dog.
Just another scenario. It's puzzling

Almost simultaneous accidents can happen. I know an elderly couple, a few months ago, the wife fell due to vertigo from medication and was hospitalized. Her husband was quite frail and had a fall at home and died while the wife was still in hospital. He was only left alone for an hour but was found with head trauma.

If Arakawa had a medical incident while in the bathroom, her fall could have knocked over the space heater, and she spilled pills she was taking (could be something like she thought she had a migraine, which was actually something much worse)

If the dog in the bathroom was crated (I'm not sure?) It makes sense it would pass from dehydration/starvation. Or if not crated, could have consumed some of the spilled pills.

The other two dogs may have had access to water in the house - fountain, toilet, etc., and eaten through trash or even a bag of dog food, gotten into cupboards etc. Dogs can open doors too... it's not impossible one of them did.

Obviously this is all just speculation on my part, but no matter what this is such a tragedy :(
