Descriptions of him apparently falling in the mudroom, and hence on his way in or out of the house, are consistent with a heart attack (rather than CO2 which makes people feel weak).

CO2 is Carbon Dioxide. We are surrounded by a certain percentage of Carbon Dioxide all the time. Carbon Dioxide is not poisonous as a gas. Carbon Dioxide give the soda we drink it fizz.

After reading about the pills, I don't think Carbon Monoxide has anything to do with this case.

Only way I can get my dogs to eat a pill is to wrap it in cheese.

But some dogs will eat pills like candy. I think the dog either died from eating some of the pills or dehydration/starvation.

Sounds like the only really suspicious thing about the deaths is that there were multiple simultaneous deaths. If they had occurred on their own it would just simply seem to be a death due to a fall.

to some degree I agree with you. But when LE finds two people dead and no obvious signs, it should be investigated as suspicious.

Yes, I was typing CO2 because (most) people on websleuths understand it as shorthand for CO2 poisoning such as happens eg when a propane or gas heater has a faulty connection, as has been previously speculated by others on this thread.

Totally off the cuff theory:

I'm postulating that in an argument, the wife hit him over the head and which eventually killed him.

Then she took lots of pills to end it for herself.

Maybe she hated his dog and forced the dog to eat more pills... or the dog ate them once she was down.

Obviously, I don't know. I do know that his, her and the dog's toxicology and cause of death will be pivotal.

Yes, I can certainly see the death of his wife causing stress. First action would have been to call 911 so would be good to know the location of phones. I'm not sure I follow the "space heater" falling on someone. Aren't those typically on the floor?

My best guess is, she suffered some sort of medical distress (which explains the spilled prescription meds) & passed, then he found her. In distress himself, he likely fell & knocked himself out and then also passed. The dog would have died of thirst or starvation if locked in the crate in the closet. Terribly sad no matter how it all went down.

What's puzzling is how the 2 dogs survived without anyone feeding or watering them.

I have the same question. Google says a dog can go 5 days without food. From all reports, Mr. & Mrs. Hackman were deceased much longer than 5 days.

There were no obvious signs of a gas leak in the home, it said, and the Fire Department did not find signs of a carbon monoxide leak.

CO2 is not what harms people when there is a bad connection with a gas heater. If gas (propane or natural gas is leaking) it can displace oxygen or ultimately cause an explosion. If the fumes are not properly vented, CO (carbon monoxide) is inhaled. CO IS toxic where as CO2 itself is not (just displaces oxygen). It seems that all three are unlikely now.
