Yet here we are , 18 yrs after the fact, 8 yrs of investigating CB , 5 yrs almost to the day of declaring to the world they had a prime suspect and no prospect of charges ,if the evidence didn't exist of a stranger going into 5a on the night of 3/05/07 and taking MM it won't exist today.
OG told us in 2013 that a man seen carrying a child fitting a description close to that of MM was seen at circa 10pm , he's the key always has been.
One would have had a great deal more confidence in that opinion had the investigators been informed of the appx. 10pm sighting had the witnesses come forward a t the time rather when they remembered it than a fortnight after the event.
As it stands there were three known sightings of unidentified men carrying a female pyjama clad child that evening. The two you mention and the man witnessed walking away from the direction MM's bedroom.

My money is on the man actually witnessed walking away from the scene of a child's disappearance carrying a child and reported immediately to investigators at the most relevant time.

Particularly as it seems highly likely any child being carried legitimately through the streets from a creche by her father is likely to have been eliminated from the enquiry in a police check.

Yet the world was told by family members,( so no lost in translation )early the next day that the window and shutters were broken, only later in Oct of that year did Mitchell deny it was the case, once said it can't be unsaid.
maybe they were I don't understand your point of how any of this leads to no possible way she was abducted.

The building where McCanns stayed was not a part of the resort complex. Just a nornal block of privately owned flats, some of them rented for resort guests by Mark Warner and other companies.
I don't think any of the resort properties were walled off within a resort complex.
For example Blocks #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 and #6 used the set-up you describe. For example the resident of the flat immediately above 5A was an owner occupier, who described her flat being invaded by a burglar who had entered and exited via a window which she had barred as can be seen from photographs.

RSBM it’s possible. However, probability suggests it’s unlikely… even more so that CB was responsible. In the context presented in the witness statements it would be very difficult. And, there are many things that need to be discounted from the statements for an abduction to have occurred.

  • #645
Please remind me of the name of the witness who overheard GM talking to his family at around midnight? Did he confirm the “jemmied” claim in his statement?

The sequence of communication that facilitated the announcement of the abducted child and jemmied windows on morning TV at roughly 7:00 a.m. on the 4/5 was quite remarkable.

If CB was responsible, he was in through the patio doors, in gloves, opening the window to either escape from or use as a lookout but definitely not opening them by force, applying ether to MM, not waking the twins, escaping through the window or the patio doors, while carrying MM… all the while not being seen despite the heavy parent traffic before vanishing without a trace.

And people say we need to look for a simple solution.
As can be seen from police files, initially the investigation followed a professional direction which made best use of the resources to hand, for example searching with dogs and handlers; checking know sex offenders etc.

Unreported though was the spate of home invasions occurring throughout the Algarve which targeted children as thy slept in their holiday accommodation.

Surely a far more profitable line of investigation than the trivia the investigators eventually followed which side-tracked any meaningful investigation for many years.

Some of these ‘Clues’ and ‘gotchas’ are Chinese whispers. They’re an example of the strength of the many layers they’ve stacked to their theory. They think that their big busy theory is a credible one, but in reality they’ve just diluted a bad idea every time they’ve added to it.

Creative writing comes in when they need to fill gaps - that’s why we read about super agents, ‘establishments’, phantom freezers, Lisbon Treaty’s, Jane’s Flip-Flops etc etc.

11000 pages, books, blogs, documentaries, SM clubs + 18 years spent on a theory - what is their one strongest most incriminating piece of evidence?

It won’t be as incriminating as a PDL paedophile & his obsession with abducting, assaulting & killing a little blond girl.

1 page of CB writing is more incriminating than anything they’ve come up with in 18 years.

I've never said no way was she abducted, not one of the LE's have said how they consider she was removed by a stranger especially the BKA, until such time if ever they do and remove all doubt then I remain sceptical.

As far as I know, no police force has catagorically stated that MM was abducted by a stranger.

I agree.

So again: the blocks were not the resort property. These were just normal, residential blocks of flats. There is a wall around the Ocean Club, with two pools, Tapas Bar, creche and tennis courts inside, the blocks though are outside of that fenced area as they are not the resort property.

You are absolutely correct. Indeed 5A, the property rented by MM's parents for their holiday was in the ownership of a Mrs McCann who had such an agreement with the holiday company.
This arrangement included maintenance and cleaning of the premises by holiday company employees.
Interestingly it appears that as well as working as a waiter CB worked occasionally in maintenance for the holiday company.
NewsUKCrime

The suspect in the MM case “repeatedly worked” at the resort from which she disappeared, according to a new documentary.
German paedophile CB was said to have carried out repair work at the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz before the three-year-old vanished from there in 2007.

Evidence gathered for a documentary by SAT.1, a German channel, showed CB was “very familiar” with the Portuguese resort and surrounding area.

Makers of the programme have shared their findings with the police.

New comments from Brueckner dismissing accusations that he abducted Madeleine will feature in the documentary.

He was living in a camper van near Praia da Luz in the Algarve around the time she disappeared.

Me too.
Instead it would appear that German law enforcement are concentrating on going for the jugular.

Snip
German Prosecutor HCW has suggested that the police "may know" the location of MM murder.

HCW revealed in a new BBC documentary that the German police are "sure" that MM, who went missing in May 2007 in Portugal, died there.

Indeed we are in agreement to that. It is the easy accessibility of the accommodation rented by the holiday company which perhaps allowed burglaries to be rife.
The general layout of the residences did present their own difficulties
  • in the case of the MM party it negated use of company staff to patrol the accommodation at night and they used their own system with disastrous consequences.
Of interest may be the following extract from Shining in Luz's blog which had looked at crime in Luz mentioning the accommodation.

The following comes from a travel review site. I have left it with the original spelling and capitalisation mistakes. I put the post in italics simply to make it clear what this commentator wrote at that time, and what I am writing now.

this has to be the worst holiday we have ever had. arrived on a sunday, three hour plus transfer, make sure you use the loo at airport before going on the bus to the resort. when we arrived we were greeted by the most rude male receptionist who hurried us through the booking in process and our bags were loaded into a van which took us up to the back or top of the holiday village, there are many steep hills and quite a distance to walk back to the main street where what little there is to do is situated. once in the appartment which i might add was very nice we decided to wait until the next day and ask to be shifted down hill. that night we had a prowler in the garden standing watching us, when we reported this to the rep she dismissed it as being a security guard, we knew it wasn’t as we saw his clothing which was nothing like
once in the apartment which i might add was very nice we decided to wait until the next day and ask to be shifted down hill. that night we had a prowler in the garden standing watching us, when we reported this to the rep she dismissed it as being a security guard, we knew it wasn’t as we saw his clothing which was nothing like the other guards, later during the week we met another family who were staying just along from us and on the same night a couple of hours after they were broken into whilst they were in bed and had some money stolen. the next day we got shifted to another apartment in which we would feel safer.

we agreed to take the new apartment and it was not until we acutally lived in it that we realised that it was to put it politely – sub standard, dirty, smelly. rather than bore you about our accomodation, watch out if you put a bad comment in the comment book, one of our friends noticed a bad comment made by another guest and told us about it, she said it sounded exactly like the many complaints we had, next day the page was ripped out. sheet’s were never changed, towels only changed once on day 5, you are supplied with one toilet roll and then told you have to buy your own for the rest of your stay.

once out, it is hard to find a good place to eat, everything is the same and if you are a vegitarian, then i hope you like veg. soup and veg pasta because that is all you will find.

the resort is unusually quiet not much for the holiday maker to do, although a visit to lagos is a refreshing change as there is life there and some nice places to eat.

i would never go back to luz and all i can say is that whoever owns the apartment g 1 c that has a welsh dragon tile outside the apartment, you know who you are, you should be ashamed of yourself”

The comment is at http://www.holidays-uncovered.co.uk/portugal/algarve/praia-da-luz/ocean-club.html

I was looking for information on how Ocean Club systems worked in 2006, and there is information about that on the same page, but that is reserved for a different post.

What can I say about this complaint? The first and most obvious point is that review sites are open to manipulation and it is impossible to verify the accuracy or otherwise of this comment.

If Mags Bruce was located to the north end of the Ocean Club, it would mean her first apartment was north of the Millennium. That is the only part of the complex that fits. It is certainly a fair walk to the beach from there and Luz is hilly, so a fair bit of energy is required.

Some of the comment sounds simply like a bit of venting steam. Menu choice at the time was South African, Indian, Portuguese, Italian, English and Chinese. If you can’t get variety or a veggie out of these, I am at a loss to know what it takes.

Other comments are incorrect, though I can understand why. The owner of the apartment in question, Welsh dragon with G1C, would have been required to keep the property infrastructure, plus fittings and furnishings, up to a reasonable standard. Mags comments about G1C, re dirty, smelly, sheets changed on day 5, and only 1 roll of toilet paper provided, these are all the responsibility of the Ocean Club, not the owner.

The comment about Luz being quiet I would file into my true cabinet. If you don’t know about Luz, it seems like the sea, the beach, the sun, some places to eat, and nothing else. If you know anything about Luz, that perspective changes – late night bars, singing, dancing.

Here’s a small note for you. G1C is in the ground floor of block 1 on Rua Dr Agostinho. The blocks on the south side of this road were labelled, from west to east, G4, G5, G6 and G1. Mags stinky apartment was less than 100m from apartment 5A. The prowler had to be 700m plus away.

If you scroll down a bit further on the same link, you get the following. Again I have put it in italics to show what the original poster stated, and again I have not corrected or altered anything.

My family and i have just returned from our holiday.with Thomas cook oceon club apartments praia da luz algarve portugal we got there on the 19th aug and by the 20th we had been burgled we found out later 3 other familys had allso been burgled from the same apartmentents praia da luz reminds me of alcatraz everywere you turn there are metal shutters and bars over every window. make sure you get a safty deposit box at reception as soon as you arrive .praia da luz is more for older couples with out children very quiet lots of resturants with great food at a good price however if your looking to find bars with sum music you will be looking for 2 weeks and you still wont find any

Other reviews of the Ocean Club are much more positive. The one for Ocean Villas is positively glowing. It is therefore important to point out that Ocean Villas is not part of the Ocean Club.

It would be great if I have got this wrong. In that instance, Smithman’s path would make excellent sense. He had taken his child out of the Ocean Club night crèche on Rua Direita, made a sensible diversion to the north, in order to avoid the roadworks on Rua Direita/Baptista, and was taking a logical route to Ocean Villas.

That would be Smithman solved, were it not for two problems. Ocean Villas is not part of the Ocean Club. And Andy Redwood did not find Smithman in the Ocean Club night crèche register. Oh, and Smithman, an innocent in this version, has not come forward in 8 years to rule himself out.

I am now trying to think what Andy Redwood said of the crime scene around Luz on the Crimewatch of late 2013.

I recollect it was to the effect that burglaries in the vicinity had gone up four-fold in the early months of 2007. If the prowler & burglary report of Mags in 2008, and the 4 burglaries report from Pearl Beniston in 2006 are accurate, then DCI Redwood is making Luz the crime capital of the universe.

At the moment, I am suspecting that these pieces do not fit together properly, but who knows.

Edit 15 May 2015. The current complaint system is a book, numbered pages, with 3 pages/copies per complaint. Top copy goes to complainant, middle copy must be sent to a local official, 3rd copy is kept in the book. I do NOT know what was in place in 2006/2007/2008, but a three-part copy system with numbered pages does not sound like rocket science. Ripping a page out is definitely not feasible.

Great informative post thanks...
Now the Mccanns left their apartment unlocked with the kids inside you would have thought that they had read the reviews about a prowler and the burglaries taking place .... Obviously not so with that in mind I really dont see what would have been difficult in an abduction to an experienced burglar ..one with pDFile tendencies like CB ...ok its not been proved yet however the germans say they based on what they have got believe she is dead 100% and he is there man... I dont buy the idea they are just looking to crack a high profile case or getting attention for themselves thats not how the police work ...if they say that and going off what we know about CB I am inclined to believe them over some age old conspiracy about the parents disposing of their own child while on Holiday.... My own opinion of course

How “ coincidental “ that the burglaries in PDL area increased fourfold , early 2007 , just after CB was released from his fuel theft jail term ..

I dont buy the idea they are just looking to crack a high profile case or getting attention for themselves thats not how the police work ...if they say that and going off what we know about CB I am inclined to believe them over some age old conspiracy about the parents disposing of their own child while on Holiday.... My own opinion of course
There isn't a great deal of independent information left on the internet prior to circa 2007, but what there is suggests that the majority of tourists would have had no idea about the dark underbelly of Luz represented by career criminals such as CB.

We did eat at the a la carte tapas restaurant but preferred the selection and quality of food in the millennium.

The Mark Warner staff were superb. The childcare facilities were great and when our son was ill they couldn't have done more to help.

All the pool areas are great. The adult pool is very peaceful and the kids pool area good fun.

One thing that is worth mentioning is that the resort is all cobbles so if you take a pushchair it's probably worth taking a sturdy one as the cheap lightweight one we bought especially for the trip wasn't really built for the bumps!

I recommend this resort for young families and those looking for a quiet peaceful resort with a lovely beach.

But it seems that CB was on the Portuguese police radar almost from the word 'GO' which makes it all the more extraordinary that they took such a wrong tack and wasted so much time in hounding MM's parents.

Portuguese detectives showed up to question prime suspect CB soon after Madeleine McCann's disappearance, but he wasn't in when they arrived.

They say that but in five years nothing but words.

I do think the Germans have suspicions that CB abducted MM, he may have even written as much.

The problem is though that the guy carried a gun, wore a suit and drove a Jaguar while earning his living fishing golf balls out of a pond. The guy is not only a paedophile, he is a delusional paedophile.

No matter what anyone thinks, or wants to think, CB can’t reliably be linked to a crime against MM - it’s quite clear.

One is certainly of the opinion that CB has a case to answer. Logic dictates that over the years since the MM case was looked at in earnest that any sexual deviants who fitted the bill were tracked down, interviewed and eliminated from the inquiry.
We know that the Algarve was a magnet for them and we know that CB was one who slipped through the net for many years. He is also the only one who has not been eliminated from the inquiries of all investigators.

He is also a sadistic rapist. Let's not forget that.
