Congratulations!

What I found most unfortunate about the walkouts here, were how they were planned and executed by the administration without a doubt, (They planned the lessons for the day, they planned where the students would "walk" to and what would be done once there.), and then students were "invited" to take part... invited with a heavy dose of manipulation in the form of extreme praise for choosing to opt in, and no real option to avoid the planned classes on the subject...

Once they knew they had an angle to play, "Our kids deserve our support", Our kids need to discuss school safety" ect... They exploited that loophole for all it was worth.

The students were "led" but the staff, too cowardly to admit that, just kept right on saying "we are respecting our students right to "their voice" by "supporting this protest".

And they were careful to hide the agenda. Never mentioned gun control once, ever, in the emails to parents, just couched it in terms like "school safety" and Civil Disobedience" (which is odd imo, because a school santioned walkout is hardly an act of Civil Disobedience. It's more let's play protest for 17 mnts!)...

It was disingenuous of them to suggest that those students had any voice at all since the only "voices" they had any respect for, were those that parroted their own.

Seems as though school safety would have a lot to do with gun control. IMO

KIDS AND GUNS: HERE'S HOW EASY IT IS FOR CHILDREN TO GET THEIR HANDS ON A FIREARM

http://www.newsweek.com/gun-control-children-access-suicide-shootings-847008

Though thousands have died, "millions" more children—including those suffering from depression or other mental illnesses—currently live in homes with guns easily accessible to them, according to a report published in the academy's (AAP) March catalog.

"Millions of U.S. children live in homes in which firearms are left loaded or unlocked or both," the report stated. Most children who use firearms to commit suicide or fall victim to unintentional firearm deaths use weapons found in their home, it continued.

"Our findings suggest that millions of U.S. children are placed at substantially higher risk of fatal firearm injury, especially suicide, than would be the case were parents to follow guidelines first put forward by the AAP more than a quarter century ago," the group concluded.

That study followed the organization's June 2017 report citing data from 2012 to 2014 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which found that nearly 1,300 children are killed by firearms every year. Another 5,790 children (ages 0-17) are wounded by gunfire.

One in five of the non-fatally wounded children—21 percent, or 1,244 children—is the victim of an unintentional shooting, according to the study. In unintentional shooting deaths, the majority of children 12 or younger were killed while playing with guns. That was the case for 49 percent of 13- to 17-year-olds.

After his family died, he threatened to kill himself. So the police took his guns.

LISBON, Conn. — John McGuire was inside his house with 81 guns when five state troopers were dispatched to investigate a threat he had reportedly made. They drove past a series of frozen lakes and up an unplowed driveway to a house set back in the Connecticut woods. The shades were drawn. A tattered mattress wasted away on the front porch, and boxes of medical equipment cluttered the entryway.

McGuire, 76, came to the door wearing a stained sweatshirt and uncombed gray hair. He hadn’t dealt with police in the two decades since he retired from the force himself, but he still knew the legal statutes and understood his rights. He asked the police if he was under arrest, and the officers said he was not. He asked if he had broken any laws, and they said he hadn’t. They told him he wasn’t being charged, or investigated, or even accused of any crime. Instead, they had come to search his house this winter evening based on a controversial type of warrant, one that represents the United States’ latest piecemeal attempt to prevent gun violence.

“Person Posing Risk to Self or Others,” read the bold lettering on top of the warrant.

FEC Reportedly Investigating Whether Russia Used NRA to Funnel Money to Trump

The Federal Election Commission has opened a preliminary investigation in whether the National Rifle Association took illegal contributions from Russian organizations that were meant to benefit Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, according to Politico.

The investigation is partly a result of a complaint from American Democracy Legal Fund, a progressive advocacy group that filed a complaint requesting the FEC look into reports of ties between Russians and the NRA.

Opinion: NRA’s mission has changed dramatically

The NRA has since led the movement that has changed the way many Americans think. We have gone from a society that rarely heard or read about violence with a gun to thinking you have to arm yourself to be protected. “If everyone was armed no one would dare use their guns.” So, how has that worked out?

As TPS Director of Communications Dan Voelpel explained: “If something happens at one of our schools that requires someone to draw a gun, she [Santorno] wants it to be a highly trained Tacoma Police Officer.”

After Santorno made the decision, she consulted with Tacoma Chief of Police Donald Ramsdell who expressed his support.
