Hurricane Michael - October 2018

OBE....can you tell me about tall skinny pine trees.....do you have a lot near your home? I have a bunch that are thick....old....but can sure bend with the wind. My kids have taken theirs out so that none can hit their home. Any thoughts? Lato

Omg...now we are in the path of Michael ourselves.

Our local advisory says we may experience 80 mph winds and tornadoes.

I am so terrified of bad weather especially high winds.

My hubby has been busy removing everything off of our patio and anything else that could become flying projectiles. I have a lot of large flower planters too so he has taken them and put them inside his shop.

Praying for everyone.

oh no!!! I was so hoping not your area. Makes me feel panic just reading your post, that sickish feeling inside too. I hear you high winds scare me too. I am so glad you have your hubby. Please please stay safe. Yes, prayers for everyone. Take ❤.

“Nadine is moving toward the west-northwest near 8 mph (13 kph), and a motion generally toward the northwest is anticipated over the next few days,” the NHC said. “Maximum sustained winds remain near 40 mph (65 kph) with higher gusts. Some strengthening is possible over the next day or so, with weakening anticipated on Thursday,” Oct. 11.

Tropical Storm Leslie is continuing to move east in the Atlantic Ocean, and the NHC said that the storm is likely going to become a hurricane.
The storm’s forecasted path could take it back to near the west coast of Africa.

Interests in Baja California should monitor the progress of Sergio, said the NHC, adding that there are no warnings or watches in effect for the storm. The storm is moving to the east-northeast at 8 mph.
Over the coming days, the storm will likely weaken, the NHC said.

Hurricane Michael is now a Category 3 major storm and is 295 miles south of Panama City, Florida, the NHC said at 5 p.m. on Oct. 9.
The storm is still forecast to hit the Florida Panhandle on the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 10.

Thank you.

Just last July we had powerful straight line winds..pouring rain and hail. It tore off the top of our gazebo and tossed it a 100 feet further out in our yard. I thought for sure it was going to shatter our windows but thank God our home didn't suffer any damages.

We are use to having tornado watches and warnings but I never get use to them. I have always been so terrified of bad weather all of my life.

We do have a plan in place. Many times we have had to get in our hallway underneath a mattress with our two precious fur babies. It scares me to death for our family who also lives in our county.

It never gets any easier though and the anxiety is so great.

Be alert and safe everyone.

I need to read ahead. I am sorry I am replying again.

I just wanted to let you know that I too have horrible fear of storms. I was told that when I was quite young lightening hit near me, maybe that is where it comes from IDK. When attending university, I was the only one who during evening or night I would go down to the basement (there were dorm rooms down there too and I never unfortunately was able to be in one, think they were popular) during storms; we had many tornado warnings.

It is so hard for many to understand the real fear and anxiety I have. I do hear you. I will be thinking about you a lot. Keep us posted.

I hope everyone stays safe and keep on letting us know how you are doing. Prayers.

I'd blame Michael.

Hurricane Michael (Myers) in October.

Better watch out for this guy he can do a lot of damage!
Figured it would be him.

Oh sweet Katherine. I understand. Holding your hand dear.

Panama City is where our oldest daughter lives right on the beach. So does our oldest granddaughter and her family.

They have boarded up their homes and stored their boats. They all are on the way inland to Georgia where our oldest daughter and her husband have a home. They will stay there until they are able to return home.

It is sooo dark here in SW Georgia. Getting more and more hurricane warnings now as well. The last time I checked Michael is expected to come right over us. What I hope for everyone is it will quickly break up once it hits land...then fizzle out.

I know one thing lol..my sweet hubby is already so tired from working all day removing and storing away outside furniture and helping our neighbors do the same in our close knit subdivision.

Still praying for all who may be in Michael's path.

Hope your family stays safe!

It was cloudy all day here, no rain although there are reports of flooding on the roads of the keys like Longboat Key:

VIDEO: Flooded streets on Longboat Key

Bayfront Park:

VIDEO: Flooding at some waterfront parks in Sarasota

The South Jetty in Venice:

VIDEO: South Jetty in Venice closed due flooding, water crashing on rocks

..................................

It was actually good bicycling weather today I was worried about the winds coming home, but they were practically nonexistent.

this is just weird

it is psychological

why are they not telling people he will hit cat 4 wont landfall at cat 4 but people waking up and checking in in 6 hours and seeing a cat 4

why are they not bracing people

he is gonna hit cat 4

they need to put that out

the water off tampa is 84 degrees

he is gonna blow up

it just mental stuff

frances was like this

it was like all of sudden

they should

imo

they should be reporting that they expect a major intensification and then a drop

when your in it it is exhausting

why are they not saying will probably hit cat 4

We are on 4 acres and some is very wooded in the back part of our property.

We did have 40 to 45 foot tall pines which were big around in the front and huge 65 foot pecans and oaks. We had 11 of them removed that were around our home about a year ago. I felt so much better once they were down.

Just this past week our next door neighbor had four massive pines taken down that were close to her home. She told me today she felt so relieved they are gone now since we do have tornadoes and severe thunderstorms and now hurricane warnings.

My suggestion if you fear them falling then have them taken down around your home.

Pines do bend and sway if the wind is isn't real high but if it gets too high they will snap and do damage to roofs...homes. They also easily splinter becoming dangerous flying projectiles in high winds.

They are beatiful but if the winds are extremely high they can be dangerous.

OBE....what great advice re the trees. So nice to think about moving some of these big ones out.....both pines and hardwoods.
I was six when I experienced my first hurricane. Maybe that is why it is seared in my mind. The trees went down all over town. I didn't know at that time that winds could take out so many trees.

OT: Tornado warning Iowa....just south of DesMoines.....see the weather channel

We lost two very very tall poplar trees growing right in front of my childhood home. Tornado pulled them right out of the ground by the roots. Scary but true story: There was an open area not yet built up long ago where cows mooed and grazed all day a few streets up from me. The tornado in 1998 blew long splintered pieces of wood right through a couple of cows, you could see both sides of the wood pieces sticking through the cattle. They were still standing. Horrible torrents of wind.

Hang tight OBE, we'll be thinking of you and yours...preparing for these is exhausting! Sounds like you have a great guy! One good thing that happens from these terrible storms is the willingness to help others.

Just spoke to my cousin who is 40 miles from Panama City...she's staying there, they've been prepping all day too...worried about her.

I pray she is okay.

Nighttime for me is the hardest not knowing or seeing what is happening outside.

I want to thank everyone who has given me and my family support.

It means so much to me. You all are my second family.

I am logging off now. All in the path of Michael are in my thoughts and prayers.

Please stay safe.

Why, why why?
I live in Fire Country. *Southern California.
I understand it's different, we frequently get nearly zero advance warning and have to watch the vistas around us to try to figure out how close the fire is.
But, we have been evacuated 5 times since 2004. Although our home did not burn, the fires have gotten got within blocks of our home.
If I had the luxury of days of warning, I would prepare my property and leave, even if fur babies and we had to sleep in our cars.
Is this a mentality of "It won't happen to us?"

Lots of chatter on the Weather Channel about people ignoring evacuation orders.

They are beautiful but if the winds are extremely high they can be dangerous.

We live in an apartment and some pine and oak trees were cut recently, including the one (pine) outside our bedroom window. At the same time it makes me a little sad as an owl would sit in it periodically and hoot, plus the tree frogs singing late at night, would lull me to sleep. I kind of miss that.
