Hurricane Michael - October 2018

  • Only three major hurricanes have made landfall in the Panhandle since 1950: Eloise in 1975, Opal in 1995 and Dennis in 2005. Michael will likely be the fourth.
  • Michael is expected to be the strongest hurricane, based on wind speeds, to make landfall in the continental US since Irma in September of last year.
  • The "forecast cone" for Michael (the storm's projected path) stretches from Florida all the way north to New Jersey.
  • About 28 million people are under a hurricane watch or warning, or tropical storm watch or warning, across six states (Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina).
  • Michael will be the strongest hurricane to hit the continental US in more than a year

I need to read ahead. I am sorry I am replying again.

I just wanted to let you know that I too have horrible fear of storms. I was told that when I was quite young lightening hit near me, maybe that is where it comes from IDK. When attending university, I was the only one who during evening or night I would go down to the basement (there were dorm rooms down there too and I never unfortunately was able to be in one, think they were popular) during storms; we had many tornado warnings.

It is so hard for many to understand the real fear and anxiety I have. I do hear you. I will be thinking about you a lot. Keep us posted.

I hope everyone stays safe and keep on letting us know how you are doing. Prayers.

Good morning everyone.

Katharine as we all continue to worry and pray together I have my own story of why I have always been terrified of bad weather even as a small child. I saw the fear my mom (RIP) had so I felt if she was terrified I should be too.

She went to her grave worrying about bad weather. The day she was buried couldn't have been more beautiful with bright sunshine and calm winds. We all thought how that would have been a day she wouldn't have to worry about the weather.

During the 80s we had a tornado in my mom's area. She was in her brick home with her dog Toasty. Her sister in law lived close by however her home was made of wood. Instead of calling my aunt to come to her more solidly built home she loaded up Toasty in her vehicle and drove to my aunt's. By that time the weather was really bad so no matter how much she tried to coax Toasty out of her car..she wouldn't budge.

She races into my aunt's home. Moments later they saw the tornado and right at the edge of mom's property it lifted up over her home and was gone but all in that area there was major tornado damage all around her and my aunts home.

We had no idea she had done this until afterwards. We ask her 'moma why in the world didn't you get aunt Suzie to come stay with you since your home is brick?' She said all she could think of was she just didn't want to be alone.

I am so thankful my family evacuated from Panama City. Their lives mean everything.

However as I have watched the news since 4am I think both of their homes will be destroyed since both homes are right on the beach.

I worry for all of our WS members' safety no matter where they are since it continues to show some of us are within the eyewall path even if we live inland.

May God be with everyone who may be impacted by this monster.

Please stay safe.

This storm is a monster. I am about 80 miles inland from Panama City, and my county in SE Alabama is under a hurricane warning. I've lived in this region for many years, and I'm more afraid of this storm than any that I can remember. Good luck to everyone in its path!

I have a friend in Alabama so I am keeping in touch with her religiously but looks like they will only get rain (thankfully). Stay safe, dancemom!

My prayers are with all of the people in the affected areas. My family booked a vacation in Cape San Blas for this coming March. We've never been there before but have been looking so forward to it based upon the beautiful videos and pictures we've seen. Now, this demon of a storm is barreling down on this very location.
