Hurricane Sandy updates

I said our power came back on a little while ago. However, my inlaws have no power in Montgomery Co. MD, in Chevy Chase. So there are still thousands without power in the DC area. But we were mostly spared, thankfully.

At least seventeen dead on the continent and seven million without power, catastrophic property losses in several states, blizzards in the mountains beyond - and yet, and yet. Sandy appears not to have punched as hard as advertised, and that's a blessing. Computer model yesterday predicted eleven million without power and damage-based paralysis for much of the Eastern Seaboard. Hard to say we got off easy, even if only one person had died. But Katrina was so much worse that Sandy can't even be spoken of in the same sentence.

We are in CT, mid-state...made it through fine. The wind was horrendous, but thankfully we still have power...it only flickered off twice but stayed on.

Michigan feels Superstorm Sandy pain with power outages, high winds, waves

By Jim Lynch, Tom Greenwood and Oralandar Brand-Williams
The Detroit News

It may be centered over Pennsylvania, but the wet, icy power of Hurricane Sandy has created havoc in Michigan, resulting in high winds, power outages, canceled flights and tremendous waves on the Great Lakes.

The storm has killed at least 16 people in seven states, cut power to more than 7.4 million homes and businesses from the Carolinas to Ohio and caused scares at two nuclear power plants.

In Michigan, wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph were recorded along the Lake Huron shoreline in the Port Huron area, according to the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.

"Fort Gratiot, which is located about three miles north of Port Huron, recorded a gust of 74 mph," meteorologist Steve Considine said Tuesday morning. "Winds are dropping a bit now, but we can still expect gusts of 50 to 60 mph from the tip of the Thumb to the Port Huron/Sarnia area."

As of 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service reported trace amounts of sleet and snow in some portions of Oakland and Genesee counties...

Yes, thinking of JerseyGirl, Filly, songline in Manhatten :what:

Who else? Someone on the thread was in Orange cty NY yesterday, need to go back and get names. Unbelievable how many we're in this storms path!

Concerned about Jersey*Girl - hasn't been on since 2:10am yesterday. Have sent her a note.

Everything good here, albeit a tad shaken up but ok.

Very sorry for just now checking in but transformers were sparking all night last night, was very scary.

Wanted to mention by the grace of God there's no major damage here. I absolutely can't believe it. We were feeling 85+ mph winds & the heaviest part of the storm (what comes after the eye) was dead set to target our area. Well at the last minute it curved & missed us by about 4-6 miles. We didn't even flood. I swear I think it's divine intervention. The nuclear power plant (PSE&G) didn't obtain any damage at all, neither did DuPont's. truly - it's hard to believe. I'm so very grateful.

My heart goes out to all that was in the path of this cyclone. It was a beast of a storm!

I have multiple relatives living on the coast, an aunt & uncle plus a great aunt living in AC - re the mayor in AC, it's not how it seems. My family got out but several people stayed in shelters that felt they had nowhere to go. The mayor informed the people it is ill advised to stay. He tried to coordinate last minute shelters to try to help those that refused to leave for whatever reason they had. IMO, & in my family's opinion, he didnt do his job to the best of his ability bc he should have demanded they leave & if not then leave them on their own to suffer their own consequences. It was stupid for anybody living in a coastal area around there to stay. They should have heeded Gov Christie's warnings - they didn't. However, the mayor of AC did warn his residents, he was only remiss in the way he said it. He should have been more demanding to drive it home to them that this was a very serious situation, one in which there could be loss of life.

Right now there's 2 feet of sand in my aunt's neighborhood. Omg. She took video of 15-20 ft waves before she & my uncle rolled. It's unbelievable.

2.4 million in NJ without power. Almost 8 million in combined states of NJ, MD, DE, NY and lower part of PA. That's not counting what will happen in upper PA. I'm not sure of the numbers in CT.

Received a text from SugarQueens DD, and DD is doing all right. Got power back a bit ago.

However, I can't reach Mom. I've tried several times, but she hasn't answered her cell, and her landline doesn't go through. I suspect overloaded lines, and possibly also power outage (for the landline not going through).

I'll keep trying.

I've looked at some photos and some vid...and I can't express the horror that I see, the gigantic proportions of the damage Sandy left in it's wake...and things will get worse before they get better.

Just horrific damage.

Best-

I am still catching a few pages back. Just have a question. My neighbors are out clearing branches from their yard. AM I Lazy for not doing mine ? Or, just cautious of ground soaked large trees that "appear" to be ok ?

No way I am going out to clean up. It is still windy and cold. BBBBrrrrrrr.

I'm sleeping today:waitasec:

Without knowing what your yard looks like, I'll chime in with my 2 cents worth.

1) If the branches do not risk any further damage to surrounding property then I would say just stay indoors and wait it out for a few more hours.

2) If there is a risk that the branches (depending on the size) will risk damage to your own home (flying debris) or neighbours then my opinion would be to remove at least the bigger ones out of harms way.

Again my :twocents:

Do stuff inside & get your rest, too. The outside stuff can wait. :)
