Hurricane Sandy updates

I think the mother panicked and started driving when she should have stayed in the house. I remember there was another case a while back where a guy panicked, got in his car and started driving during a hurricane-they found him dead later (if he stayed in his house he would have been alive). I don't think it's fair to try and make a villain out of the man whose house she tried to get into. I think he was scared-I wouldn't want to let a stranger into my house. There are also several versions of the story, but I tend to believe the children were already swept away before she tried to get into this guy's house.

I totally agree - thanks for sharing this story!!

There must be INNUMERABLE heroes throughout this horrible crisis. Heroes with stories that would hearten us all. I wish the media would focus on hero stories, and not grumpy people who are waiting in gas lines. During Hurricane Andrew in the south tip of Florida in 1992, I had a dear friend who breastfed 3 babies (she had one, and breastfed two more) for an entire week while supplies were trying to reach their communities. Those bottle fed babies would have died in that week, without formula and clean water, but for her giving spirit of taking other babies to her breast.

THAT's the kind of stories I wish the media would focus on here, and I'm sure they abound. Enough hearing people whine about gas lines. Really, enough putting the microphones in front of complainers instead of heroes.

Great story JeannaT. Your friend is a wonderful lady.

Looks like the Nor'Eastern predicted for mid week is going to hit the coastal NJ areas with lots of heavy rain, high winds, tidal flooding. :(. I can't even imagine the additional problems this is going to cause!
Here in the Hudson valley we are looking at a combination of snow, rain, high winds. The biggest concern for us is the high winds toppling trees that are already weak from Sandy and more power outages. We are fortunate to at least have a fireplace.
Off to clean out more closets for clothing donations.

URGENT: These 21 Sandy-Displaced Dogs And Cats NEED You To Adopt And Foster Them!

"Animals have not been immune to the devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought upon the city this week. And of course, everything that could go wrong had gone wrong this week to cause a sudden surge in homeless animals: Animal Care & Control web servers have been down since the storm, local shelters have lost power, and there has been a lack of support from local chapters of National Animal Groups. So there are a lot of homeless kitties and lost doggies who desperately need you to adopt or foster them, or else they'll start being killed next week."

This seems a little alarmist-like to me but nevertheless, maybe there are people who could help out. Read the whole article for more information.

So my dad's car had to be towed b/c the gas stations put water into the gas!!! Apparently, that is a way to produce more gas (or something) but if you're the unlucky one who gets it, it can really mess up your car. The AAA guy had to tow someone else who got gas at the same station!!

Bogeygal!!! You're back. I know it's been sucky for you but we're sooooo happy to see you on here (even if just thanking posts- I know what a pain it is to post on here from your phone- I did it for 5 days before my sister graciously lent me her laptop with air card).

BTW, the school district I went to was closed all of last week. And this week, it was already planned to be closed pre-Sandy Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. It's VERY likely that they will have 2 weeks off. Wow.

Oh, boy. That can really mess up your car and they know it. How awful. I hope they are held accountable when this is all over.

Tragedies can't break heroic NY community's spirit

http://centurylink.net/news/read.ph...ass&action=2&lang=en&_LT=UNLC_USNWU00L2_UNEWS

NEW YORK (AP) — Tragedy has too often visited one Queens community, but residents drew a line in the sand with Superstorm Sandy, rallying with a surfboard and kayaks at the storm's peak to rescue themselves as a fire engulfed 14 homes and flaming embers came at them like a torch.

"We heard screaming and crying in the dark," 55-year-old Thomas Buell recalled as he explained the midnight march through 4-foot-high flood waters in Belle Harbor by dozens of residents to reach a yacht club on higher ground. "It was a nightmare."

People here know disaster. On these few blocks of beach community that's home to many emergency responders, the Sept. 11 attacks hit hard, followed weeks later by a plane crash in the area that killed 265 people and now Superstorm Sandy, which took lives and touched off fires that destroyed about two dozen homes. But the rescues are the talk of the community, even as residents continue their cleanup, stacking destroyed belongings up to 20 feet high outside their ruined homes.

The heroism included Tommy Woods, who put his 82-year-old mother on a surfboard and ferried her several blocks to his brother's home through the chilly waters.......and more.......

The school district I work in was also supposed to be closed on those days but now is open 4 days, with just Election Day off, since the NJ Teacher's Convention in AC was cancelled. My kids' school was supposed to be closed Thursday and Friday and is now open all week.

This doesn't make sense. If they are putting water in the gas, there would be hundreds of cars needing to be towed.
He should contact New Jersey Office of Weights and Measures in addition to The Mayors Office.

Our small auto repair business has been without power all week! We've been using a small generator the last few days to power some lights. The guys have been doing whatever they can with hand tools and no working lifts. Now we are hearing an estimated restore date of November 11th !! With the another storm coming mid week that may push it back ANOTHER week. Sigh this is going to be very hard to recover from!

Just like the drunk who doesn't get hurt during the car crash, the bar survives the superstorm. Even the bottles made it. I think if a storm is heading my way I'm going to surround my house with booze.

A special thanks. This goes out to our National Guard who have be caring batteries that weigh anywhere from 125 to 150 lbs, up and down stairs. So they can power up cell towers. Not to mention the rescues. We can't thank you enough. We love and support all branches of the service.

He said there'd been a huge delay from the city in communicating to the state where needs were most urgent — he'd spent the previous day hauling 150 lb. cell tower batteries up dozens of flights of stairs — and on the state's end in assigning Guards to crisis points.

Don't panic if you can't reach or haven't heard yet from someone. I could not reach a close friend of mine in the Bronx-and was panicking..but his family contacted me today and said he is ok..just couldn't get any messages out to anyone..the same may be true of our friends. David is out helping everyone he can..
