Where will housing be found for Sandy's victims?

http://www.centurylink.net/news/rea...ass&action=4&lang=en&_LT=UNLC_NKNWU00L4_UNEWS

NEW YORK (AP) — Government leaders are turning their attention to the next crisis unfolding in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy: finding housing for potentially tens of thousands of people left homeless.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it has already dispensed close to $200 million in emergency housing assistance and has put 34,000 people in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area up in hotels and motels.

But local, state and federal officials have yet to lay out a specific, comprehensive plan for finding them long-term places to live, even as cold weather sets in. And given the scarcity and high cost of housing in the metropolitan area and the lack of open space, it could prove a monumental undertaking..............

Another storm — a nor'easter packing heavy rain and gusts of 50 to 60 mph — was headed for the metropolitan area Wednesday, threatening more flooding and power outages that could undo some of the repairs made in the past few days.

With the temperatures dropping into the 30s overnight, people in dark, unheated homes were urged to go to overnight shelters or daytime warming centers..............more at link.....

I don't know why they can't bring those FEMA trailers and let people park them right in front of their damaged homes, on their land, so they can work on their houses while they live in the trailers for a warm meal and heat and a shower. I watched them do it in Greensboro Kansas for the F5 tornado that leveled everything. It's a little cramped but it will be the closest thing to home for a lot of these people. Just a thought.

Still haven't heard from Jersey*Girl!

I know when we went through Hurricane Rita in Fl we went 11 days with no power. Some people had no power 5 to 6 weeks. Sometimes your neighborhood can have power but if the power loss is coming from your meter and not the pole then you have to fix it yourself. I hope she's ok and her life returns to normal as soon as possible.

Yes, thinking of JerseyGirl, Filly, songline in Manhatten :what:

Who else? Someone on the thread was in Orange cty NY yesterday, need to go back and get names. Unbelievable how many we're in this storms path!

:blowkiss: thanks for your love.

I never felt the storm, we on the Upper West Side were very lucky.

My storm was internal... :(
due to the Nanny murderer, my heart was with the family of the victims.

I have read different versions of this story leaving me to wonder what really happened. One story says they were washed from her arms, another story claims she left them hanging on to a tree while searching for help, and today a different story quoting a sheriff saying she placed them on the roof of her vehicle and they were washed away. One story says she was trying to get to a relative's house, another she was going to work (her nursing job) and still another saying she was heading to a shelter. One story said she had the children when she knocked on the door -- another story says she did not have the children. A story said she had the children, got no answer to her knocking, and lost her grip on them while trying to pick up a flower pot to break in the house. So what really happened?

THIS!!!! :waitasec: Now I'm having bad thoughts.

This is truly a very sad story. There is no one to blame but the mother. It's the same to me as the african painted dogs killing the 2 year old. Momentary lapse of reason on the mothers part.

They had a father too though. Did he know the mother was about to drive out into the storm? Did he encourage her to do so?
Yes, she drove the car but I'd like to know where she was really going, what the plan had been and if she alone made the decision to drive the boys into the storm.

Afterall, this wasn't a tornado that hit within a moments notice. The news of the approaching storm was not a secret and was publicized for five days or so.

Omg I'm so very sorry. I just now had a chance to login. I've been home only twice this week. I'm cutting & pasting this message to everyone to save time in catching up. I'm so sorry to worry everyone. I've been volunteering & its taken up much of my time. I have several friends that have lost everything. The devastation is incredible. Very somber time along the Jersey shore right now. I'm humbled to my core knowing I've been giving my husband a hard time about finishing our house, then I saw so many people lost everything they ever had & the only home they've ever known. Very sad. I'm well, my family is well, all is good... But I needed a break to help my fellow man. Very sorry to worry everyone. Love yas all! Completely didn't mean to be rude, totally unintentional.

Xox, Jersey

PS- The news footage on tv doesn't even hit the tip of the iceberg. It's unbelievable, totally. Everything I ever knew of my shore memories as a child are just that now - memories - bc its all gone. AC looks good but North Jersey is horrible. The Red Cross is doing alot, they're amazing. FEMA reacted right away, so that's a good thing. We had a Stuff The Bus over the weekend last weekend & it turned out great. Everybody has come together to help. Makes me proud to be an American. For real. Like that kind of pride that tickles your belly & makes your heart beat fast.

I'm so glad your OK. I was hoping that's where you were. My heart goes out to you all in Jersey. I lived there for a few years....the NW in the muck lands about 50 miles from NYC. I'm very saddened to learn and see the damage to the shore as well as the areas around the city. I'm sure it is very humbling. Know that my prayers and thoughts are with you, but from afar. Be careful....and TY for all you are doing.

Apparently, something that happened almost 15 years ago is supposed to be relevant today...

You were doing exactly what I thought you would be doing - helping your neighbors.

Will take you off the missing list now.

i've also noticed that since Sunday, most of the media repeating this story is from Ireland, being the father, as you said, is Irish-American.

Awful situation, but I don't think Mrs. Moore was denied help because of her race, In those winds, so loud, you cannot hear the person talking even if you are shoulder to shoulder, also, I'm sure her voice was hoarse from her screaming, maybe confused Alan as to gender, adding to the fact that there were no children.

I feel the press has been unfair, and No apology or corrections, updates from CNN, the whole thing makes me sick and makes Americans , specifically, NY'ers look bad for the unfortunate decisions made by Mrs. Moore, I don't get off on bashing her, but my point is that the press and she pointed blame at a homeowner who was asked to help her when it was already too late for the boys. Here is article where she said " "I asked you to help me, you b***ard!"

http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/201...pt-away-by-sandy-confronted-neighbor-next-day

This case/situation has kept me up at night. Truly, because I don't know what I would have done in that situation. On one hand the woman was in the worst situation in her life and needed help...and the man has every right to his fear also. The woman made a very bad choice, but we all do at times and I'm sure she panicked. I can imagine the man feeling sorrowful and some guilt, even if he felt he was doing the right thing to protect himself and his home. Looting is common with hurricanes and people breaking into your home. I could use the excuse I'm a woman, but the guilt would riddle me to no end just as well. What a true tradegy and a horrible, horrible situation. I wouldn't want to be in either of their shoes....and my sympathy goes out to both of them. :(

I can't remember what I was searching under, but I found a website that is taking donations for the cost of the funeral and burial of the two boys. I'm not sure if it's due to money or if possibly the funeral home they wanted to use might not be up and running yet. I don't know that this donation page is legit, but here is the link if you want to see it:

http://www.autismwonderland.com/2012/11/help-glenda-damian-moore-raise-money.html

From what I can see; the site is legit; run by a family friend. I emailed to ask if they'd consider setting up a FB page to go with it. I found another FB page taking donations to a different location (Staten Island Police). I'll post back if I get a reply.
