Prosecutors say Shaw hired two men, Drew Wagner and Johnny Church, to kill Bagley for stealing from him. Jonny Church changed his name from Drew Blahnik four years ago.

In 2018, Bagley was missing for more than two months before his body was found buried in the yard at Wagner’s Cedar Rapids home. Wagner has since taken a plea deal and is serving a 47 year sentence for voluntary manslaughter, among other charges. Church is serving 57 years for second degree murder for stabbing Bagley to death

Detectives believe James Bryant's body may have also been left along the couple's route between Philadelphia and Virginia in June 1972, police said.

At a news conference on Monday, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis praised the detectives who did the "hard work" to identify Carl.

"You still knock on doors, you still talk to family members, you still talk to potential witnesses," Davis said. He also highlighted the power of genetic genealogy, which he said allows the department to "bring closure far, far more often than we ever have."

The prosecution asked Bagley’s wife, Courtney, to take the stand around 10:00 a.m. Friday. She discussed her marriage with Bagley, and his relationship with Andrew Shaw. She said Bagley had started spending more time with Shaw in the year before his death. That’s around the same time she said her husband started using meth.

“I felt like he was definitely more secretive, He wasn’t the same as the man that I had married,” said Courtney Bagley.

When asked by a prosecutor if she knew anyone he was hanging out with specifically at that time, she responded with, “Um, the defendant, he was around him.”

Courtney also said her husband’s behavior continued to change, and that he had become more paranoid in the weeks before his death.

“I believe he was in fear because of the mannerisms he made. He was always looking out the window, changing security camera codes, hiding his truck when he parked,“ Courtney Bagley said.
