I know I am way behind, and have seen this question asked, but nobody has provided any sort of answer...
Why did she immediately go to the lake where the bikes were located? If the girls had never been there before, and were not allowed to go that far by bike, then WHY LOOK THERE?? I'd probably have driven up and down local neighborhood streets for a while, figuring the firls had stopped to see, talk to, or play with another child.
Unless a "big deal" had specifically been made with regard to the girls wanting to ride to the lake and being told no, why would that be the first place you would think to look? I mean, if they had asked the night before to go there, and had been told "no" it would make a lot more sense to go right to the (forbidden) lake, since the girls had expressed an interest in it.
MOO
It doesn't seem like a big mystery to me but I am often obtuse (I don't get most jokes, either).
By the time Aunt TB heard about the cousins being missing, Grandma Cook had already driven around Evansdale for an hour and had checked all three parks.
Two out of the three parks in Evansdale can be scanned completely from a vehicle. The only one that can't be scanned that way is Meyer's Lake. Well, the skate park by Meyer's Lake can be scanned from a vehicle but with the trail, the rest of Meyer's Lake is sort of part of the park.
I think that either Aunt TB's subconscious mind made the obvious conclusion or her conscious mind did it but it was more dramatic to call it her gut feeling (in my humble opinion, anything goes with Aunt TB and I mean that in a nice way).
Drew Collins was at home, watching the young'uns and probably calling around to the homes of the various kids they know.
So if two kids were to be out of sight in Evansdale, where would I look for them if the possibility of abduction had not been in my mind at all? I'd go for Meyer's Lake, the only place that can't be completely scanned from a vehicle and has a nice trail that bicycle riders can use.
Or maybe Aunt TB really did have a flash of prescience. It could happen. To put it into any sort of context, though, I would want to know how often she has a gut feeling and how often those gut feelings are correct or incorrect.
I know my husband has very reliable gut feelings. I also know that he believes that they are a result of his subconscious mind adding up lots of little clues and popping the end result into his conscious mind. His gut feelings can always be arrived at via logic, once he verbalises them.
