MONTEZUMA, Iowa —
The Division of Criminal Investigation said the autopsy on
Xavior Harrelsonis not complete and there is no official cause of death or determination if his death is a crime.
But that has not stopped the town from honoring Xavior.
“There's a lot of questions still out there,” Montezuma Elementary School Principal Kurt Hanna said.
Hanna said it's been a tough day. Kids are back in class after learning that Xavior Harrelson is no longer missing.
“It was obviously sad, but also some ability to grieve knowing that he is in a better place,” Hanna said.
School counselors spent Monday helping students cope with the news.
Many already assumed the remains found a few weeks ago in rural Poweshiek County were those of Xavior.
Now, it's official.
“It’s a ton of pressure for kids. I don't want a kiddo going home and thinking they're not safe to walk away from school or they're not safe at home,” Hanna said.
Hanna is asking the town to honor Xavior at Monday night’s volleyball game at the school gym.
“We're asking community, and fans and family members to wear orange. We want to keep Xavior’s memory going,” Hanna said.
Residents said they're glad Xavior is no longer missing. But, now they want to know what happened to the boy.
“It's very sad," library director Christine Grimm said. "But, in a way, it's sort of a relief because he's no longer missing. Just thinking, as a parent of two boys, I think the not knowing would have about killed me."
