With all respect, if one person there was the target, I'd be pretty upset being collateral damage to a personal vendetta. If the house was the target, then it's all chance/collateral for all 4.

Well, sure - there's a difference. But I do not think that's how the information came down.

First, they quickly realized that ONE of the persons in the house was the target. I'm guessing they looked closely at the victims, quickly and intensely. All four of them. So at that point, they'd have said "We think the house was targeted."

Then, narrowing down to what they think is good evidence that one person in particular was targeted, they say "We think one person was targeted."

"A neighbour of the four murdered University of Idaho students has denied the “upsetting” rumours swirling about him online after Reddit sleuths cast suspicion on him in the wake of the brutal stabbings.

Student JR said on Tuesday that he has “nothing to hide” but admitted that it was “upsetting being compared to a murderer” after his previous media interviews became the subject of intense online scrutiny.

His comments came as officials appeared to walk back previous claims that the killings were “targeted” with Latah County Prosecutor Prosecutor Bill Thompson now admitting that “perhaps isn’t the best word to use”."

Fair use snip with the name redacted by me. I am glad WS does not allow the accusing behavior found on other less-professional sleuthing boards.

Interesting. Wondering if she is not going to share her interview.

PIO for Moscow PD/ISP says they’re sending out *another* press release shortly to clarify the mixed messaging the prosecutor gave to one reporter yesterday and me today.

I assumed the 5th belonged to a surviving roommate. All 5 were there at the time of the murder so all are considered evidence.
The 5th car (black SUV) had Washington plates. It’s unknown who it belonged to. I read speculation that is may have been one of E’s siblings, but I don’t think that has been confirmed.

I have been on WS for years but this is my first post. I saw a post a couple of days ago and wanted to reply at the time, but didn't want to have a knee-jerk reaction, now I can't find the post. I apologize. Basically, the post was in reference to frat culture and had some very negative things to say about frats. The post said that frat kids were considered "elite". Are there kids who come from wealth and privilege? Sure. Are there kids whose families hover around the poverty level? Yes! The vast majority of these kids come from middle-class, working families.

More importantly, the post stated that the frat members were not tolerant of outsiders, kids from lower economic status, or even "gay" kids. My son is gay. He was welcomed into Sigma Chi (not at UofI). He has never been treated unkindly or unfairly because of his sexual orientation or for any other reason. I'm not here to defend frats. The truth is that often a fraternity is a great place for a kid to create friendships, develop a social life and even provide opportunities/build a network that can benefit them later in life.

My point is that maybe Greek Life is an important factor in this case or maybe it's not If you don't know or aren't familiar with Greek Life, I think it is important to not jump to conclusions about what kinds of kids are in frats. There are good people and bad people in every walk of life, frats included. I don't think frat members should be painted with a broad brush in the interest of developing theories. I'm sure almost all or all (without knowing all the facts) of the kids at UofI Sigma Chi feel this loss very deeply, love and support the families involved and are eager to find the person responsible for this.

I agree. I can certainly understand the frustration of friends and family of the victims. We are starting to see more and more criticism of law enforcement on this case. People want answers.
A few things to consider when we discuss the early days of the investigation; what was said, what was done, was the crime scene compromised, etc.:
When LE are dispatched to a scene, they basically arrive with a blank slate. They are responding to the information given by the 911 caller. This is why the call is so important. There would certainly be a different approach to, “My roommate is unconscious.” as opposed to “My roommate is locked in the bedroom and there is blood everywhere.” The number 1 priority for LE is always preservation of life. Did an officer approach one of the victims to see if he could get a pulse? It’s very possible. In doing so did he step in some blood or other evidence? Maybe. Does that make him useless or stupid? I don’t think so. If your loved one was laying on the bed unconscious wouldn’t you want them to be checked, just in case?
Now we have LE’s earliest statements. When you arrive on scene, you use your training and experience to make a preliminary assessment of what happened. A patrol officer in this situation would immediately call a supervisor and detectives to the scene. Within a short time the word has gotten out, you have 4 dead students, people are alarmed. You have to say something so you make a statement releasing basic facts and present your earliest theory of what you think happened. After a vicious quadruple homicide you can’t go out and say “No comment.” so you tell them your best theory based on what you know at the time.
An investigation is a fluid journey taking twists and turns as evidence is gathered, suspects are ruled out, and new information comes to light.
What is taking so long? These cops must be incompetent.
Sure, if you go to a scene in a pristine environment with a single victim and find dna and fingerprints and know there has been a recent bad divorce and the ex’s cellphone was at the home at the time of the homicide and he has no alibi, you might get a quick solve. Or what if you arrive at the scene and a suspect is standing over a dead body with the proverbial smoking gun?
But what if you go into a fairly large home, that is known to be a gathering spot and it is filled with red cups and party remnants and you have four victims spread out over two floors, and there’s dna but it doesn’t match anyone and you have to wait for all that digital data to come back and you start the labor intensive task of identifying friends, acquaintance, stalkers, exes and most of these people have left the area due to the Thanksgiving holiday or just because they are scared it could happen to them? Will that take some time? You betcha.
And you can also believe that these LE officers are working their butts off to identify this killer because they never ever want to have to respond to a scene like this one ever again.
Totally Brilliant OldCop you’ve still got it! Your Synopsis is just what this WS feed needed right now! A Practical and logical perspective! Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this!

Well, that's going to inspire a lot of confidence and peace. MOO
I think he's being honest and I think it will be appreciated.
He has no choice in any case.
Only a fool would remain unafraid under these circumstances

It really has grabbed the attention of the country, because they were young & it was a horrific crime. Please catch this madman!
Funny, I take care of my mom much of the year and I am now. She watches two hours of MSM news a night (I hate it!!!) but I haven't and she hasn't seen much coverage. Granted, I'm on the east coast atm but mom watches a lot of national news and I'm not seeing much. Just my experience & opinion.

EBM for typos

Isabella88, that's my thought too. I have wondered, since LE had said early on that there was a target, if they said that based on some (written?) message or sick "clue" left behind by the killer, that somehow indicated that there was a target.
MOO
In Brian Entin’s interview with BT last night that was on Banfield, BT said there were no messages left in the house. However, maybe we need to take that with a grain of salt given all of the conflicting statements.
