because all cars require licensing, and large databases exist for compiling the data, and if they know the type and color of vehicle, they can find it. they know how many were made, who owns them, the ones that were totaled, etc., and that means, for this car to be unidentifiable and unable to be traced to an owner, someone either slipped through a wire or the owner doesn't know the car is gone. there are a number of posts about this earlier in the thread, but this is unusual that LE would need the public's help to ID the owners.
BBM for focus

The owner could be a snow-bird (or whatever that term is for people with multiple homes, travelling to warmer climates when cold sets in?). Owner could have a squatter driving his/her car around all while owner remains oblivious to case. Oooor parents are snow-birds, oblivious to true-crime and case, while young-adult child cruises around in this car committing atrocities.

Yeah, but if the car is un-findable then it almost certainly means this wasn't a crime committed by some aggrieved college kid or impulsive incel.

My opinion.
Are we even sure if the car has anything to do with the crime or this is just a desperate hail mary by the police to find someone who may have been around the area at the time? I don't know, I'm feeling pessimistic.

I agree 120%, but just want to ask:

The "KA-BAR knife" has been mentioned a lot in interviews (I remember one LEO expert brought his own KA-BAR out in an interview because he was ex-USMC)... has that been 100% fully confirmed to be THE murder weapon?
Lots of knife companies/bladesmiths make 'clones' or very similar style knives to the KA-BAR USMC design. A general 'combat' or 'fighting' knife design. Curious why they're so sure it's a KA-BAR brand USMC knife.

Currently KA-BAR uses 1095 Cro-Van steel in that model... with a Rockwell hardness of 56-58.
56-58 RHC is a sweet spot in between lower/softer RHC chopping steel (axes/machetes) and higher RHC sharpness/edge retention (but more brittle) steels like CPM-S30V used in premium pocket knives.

I have a KA-BAR brand USMC knife... with some leather/thick grippy gloves and a tight hold on the handle (stacked leather, lots of traction) in addition to a hilt... the killer is less likely to have cut themselves than a typical kitchen knife with no hilt.

JMO of course

No, LE has not confirmed the brand of knife. The have publicly indicated it it was generally similar to KA Bar by description and the media picked up the term from a store owner who I believe indicated LE was inquiring about Ka Bar or Ka Bar style knife sales. There has been mention of bruising which leads me to think of the hilt you mentioned.

I believe it’s a general/regional term. Many in my area refer to any larger folding pocket knife as a Buck knife.

I would speculate that if this was a cheaper replica of Ka Bar, the blade would dull quicker, which may explain SG’s mention that his daughter’s manner of death was different or more brutal.

It could also be that they were modest and not wanting to be part of the "hype" surrounding this high profile case. My dad would do his best to avoid news cameras when he was working large cases. He never wanted attention, just wanted to do his job.
I agree-I wouldn’t want to be associated with this case considering the lynch mob that’s attached to it. One officer makes a face due to indigestion from a spicy lunch and BOOM, he’s SM’s next suspect!

that is a possibility. it's also possible that with the number of stolen cars, this was a previously stolen one and the person who sold it isn't really interested in providing that information. lots of chop shop and other bad behavior possible. or it belongs to someone who is indisposed and unable to report it stolen. IMO it fell through some sort of safety net for LE to need the public's help. unless the killer is dumb as a box of rocks, the only way they'd drive their own car to a quadruple homicide is if they knew it would not be traced to them. imo.

In the show "Unbelievable" they got the guy from his white truck caught on camera.

It's based on true story.

I agree, this is not a professional ‘hit’ IMO, it’s also not random enough to be a crazed outburst of rage / jealousy or some comeuppance. JMO but it’s got the signs of someone who has given up on their own life and cares not a jot what becomes of them, maybe depression, despair, or alienation, or psychosis, but has the sociopathic element enough to decide to take these people out as if it were a blood sport. In which case, I’d say it’s someone well prepared (night vision and armed with preferred weapon of choice) and it is also ‘personal‘ (knows these people and has come to despise what they represent to him). MOO

I agree. While It is likely that he had some connection to the students, I am concerned that the feeling of him outsmarting the best LE in the country, and the FBI will result in him striking again. I pray that this will not happen and that they get him soon, that is if he is even still alive.

So you’re saying there is some sort of database so they have a list of every white Elantra licensed between 2011 and 2013....
There is no list per se of 2011 to 2013 white 2011 -2013 Hyundai Elantras in Idaho. Rather, the computerized DMV records can be queried to produce such a list.

All car registration records contain searchable data fields in addition to just the license plate. These searchable date fields are very likely to include model, make year and color. They might even include zip code of registered owners.

So, one just asks the Idaho DMV computer to produce a list of car registration records containing the following data field entries: Hyundai (+) Elantra (+) white (+) 2011 -or- 2012 -or- 2013.

In the unlikely event that the computer does not have a built in feature that allows boolean loop searches of those data fields, IT pros could write a program very quickly to do it.

If the car in question had foreign plates, it is possible that another university or college would have that info for parking permits. I am not sure that would make its way to the registry.

Maybe I missed this but with all the activity on this case it is bound to happen. Were the stools in the door from the beginning, or did the police place them there? I only ask because there is a picture posted here the night after the murders that do not have the stools in the door. Just curios if the lock didn't work on that door. I used to stick an old wooden broom handle in my sliding door and that was pretty efficient
Maybe it had nothing to do with security but more on the line of keeping everyone off the doors until they properly processed them. moo

and this is potentially one of those times. they caught Ted Bundy from a stolen VW. I'm not saying that it can't happen. I'm saying the killer would be stupid to get caught that way because it's kind of a given.

I've never heard of exterior panel siding before. Do we know what kind of siding 1122 has?
You have never heard of a side panel home ? The home is not brick. It has individual horizontal lines representing panels overlayed on top of each other. The edges are sealed with a caulking usually as referenced in the original post. The 1122 is not a brick home, so it has siding. Since brick siding is sealed accept where the wood trim meets the brick, the panel siding is sealed. I am pretty sure you are aware of what a side panel home is. The material used in the architecture is not the subject. It's just sealing may crack and for that reason, the observation of red fluids at the base of the home identified in the published pictures after the news announced the murders in that home.

Poster asked why blood would leak out of the homes in the north are sealed ?

Another poster responds that the homes don't always have good seals.

All seals break over time.

Response is

There are many reasons a car would not be registered with a DMV. They ask for the public's help in these situations often.
This is not like a TV show where you type a query and a list magically appears. The reality of this process is far from that.
there is no legitimate reason the car wouldn't be registered, and I think that the point is that the car fell outside of the legit reasons. imo. and there are ways to access information pretty quickly from the dmv. No one thinks it's like tv, at least not from what I cn tell, but there are background databases that access lots of information, including last time seen in public, and that's pretty scary imo, so yeah. and I do not have a link to those databases because they're not public, but I've seen and used them. they do exist.

You'd imagine they'd not bring their phone or car, but I'm sure it happens.

it could be, but then the car still had to be sold to them or they had to bring it into the country. imo LE probably thought to check Elantra border crossings.
not if you drive to college from canada
