ID - Charles Smith & Christina Haynes for child abuse, St Maries, 2008

I can't stand it-I mean really can't. At least 5 calls made by professional people, including nurses. For both girls. Nothing. Not a wellbeing check-nothing. Na-thing. Sorry-it is making me crazy.

Ohhhh - I know. It is so frustrating. But, hopefully, this will shake their system up and maybe some new policies will be put in place that will ensure other don't fall through the cracks.

And she's getting better now. The poor little thing. It just breaks my heart.

I'm holding on to the thought that mom is having some rough times in the local pokey. I wish I knew someone in there I could slip a note to. I'm just hoping the women in there with her are "helping" her out, if you know what I mean.

It would be nice if it shook up their system. In the state I live in, after several cases like this where it was apparent that CW dropped the ball, they instituted a new rule that not all calls from mandatory reporters (daycares, social services, teachers...) had to be logged at all! Prior to this ruling, all calls from mandatory reporters at least had to be logged, if not followed up on. I guess they are more interested in covering their legal behinds. (I'm being grumpy and jaded). I know there are a lot of wonderful workers for CW and some that aren't so wonderful. But, I'm talking about the system being messed up.

Zanko - this is terrible. I was hoping that calls would not only have to be logged, but that CPS would make it a rule that they "laided eyes on the child." I really, really, really hope this case does not cause a backlash that will make it easier for CPS to avoid actual contact with a child. That would be horrible.

Maybe we need some federal rules for how CPS acts and when they actually view a child. Then all agencies would have to act the same in this regard. Another reason to call the police and ask for the "welfare" check.

So sad......

Hi all,
What also is strange is the lack of anger in the bio dad during the raw interview with him. Very strange!

  • #86
Bio Dad is probably medicated-I cannot even fathom how much you would feel like you failed your child if you saw her relatively healthy and 3 weeks later the hair had been ripped off of her head and she had dead flesh...forgive the recap.

Harrison firefighters hold fundraiser for Kyra
http://www.kxly.com/global/story.asp?s=8621683

Kyra is slowly getting better and has been transferred from the ICU unit to the pediatric unit at Sacred Heart Hospital.

The Harrison Fire Dept fired up three barbeque grills on the 4th of July, cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs, to help aid in her recovery.

The report also mentioned that she had suffered from internal bleeding.

Praying Kyra's perpetrators get everything they deserve!

The Harrison fundraiser got $4,000. And Kyra is now in satisfactory condition! I'm not sure if the link will work, cuz I had to have a password, but give it a shot. It's from the St. Maries paper.

Also, a spaghetti feed fundraiser will be in St. Maries at the Elks Lodge on Saturday July 25 from 5-8 pm.

Kyra in satisfactory condition

Kyra Wine’s condition was upgraded to satisfactory and the 3-year-old was moved from ICU to the pediatrics ward.

[snip]

Doctors will remove vacuum bandages this week that assist in healing and providing oxygen to the wounds on Kyra’s feet.

“They are going to remove the dressings and see how well they did,” said Mrs. Wine. “Overall, she’s doing really good.”

A firemen fundraiser last weekend in Harrison raised approximately $4,000 for the girls.

[snip]

The state agency itself is being scrutinized after several people accused the department’s child protective services of taking no action despite receiving calls from concerned neighbors.

The agency refuses to answer questions regarding the calls it received.

Michelle Britton, administrator for Health and Welfare's Division of Family and Community Services, said privacy laws prevent her from commenting.

“I cannot tell you how many calls,” she said. “It is truly private.”

Joyce Broadsword, who is the vice-chair of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee, said an internal investigation is underway, as well as an investigation by the Keeping Children Safe panel n a watchdog group that reports to the legislature.

“I have every confidence if there is a problem it will be taken care of,” Sen. Broadsword said.

Your link worked fine, thanks so much for the update!

Wow. This is just mind numbing.

Look at this guy. He is a major tweeker. How in the world a mother could let this skinny sore covered creep near her children is beyond me. What in the world would any female find the least bit attractive.

Nobody is perfect, especially me but honest to God, if I even DATED someone who didn't think my kid was the greatest, let alone abuse him, he is TOAST. Gone, Done,...TOAST sorry, i said that already

This might be irrational but my anger raging more for the mom. Don't get me wrong, I could throw the switch on the boyfriend and go out dancing after but it makes me crazy when I read about women who let their boyfriends abuse their children.

Idaho - thanks for the update. The link worked just fine for me. I got teary-eyed reading that big sister Amanda is getting therapy, taking swimming lessons and is now playing like a normal 6-year old. Poor baby.

It will be a long road for Kyra, but it looks like she is going to make it and it sounds like Grandma Wine and dad have got her covered. Grandma seems to be spending a lot of time at the hospital with her, thank goodness.

And Tricia - I don't think it is irrational to rage at the mom in this situation! Mom needs to be held accountable. She put her daughters in a very dangerous position, could see what was happening, probably contributed to what was happening, and did nothing to help her children. I could throw the switch on her too!

I'm glad she's doing better. Now not to be funny but can you walk with out your toes? I thought your pinky toe was vital to your ability to walk.

Actually it's you big toe that does most of the work.

She will learn to walk without her toes, and probably have a customized shoe made with toe inserts. She's very young and will learn in time to adjust to walking, although it may take some time.

She will probably become the star of the softball team!

Change made at H&W office

At least one Health and Welfare employee was fired in the wake of an investigation into a local child abuse case.

Sources who didn’t want to be identified said that a Child Protective Services worker is on a leave of absence from the St. Maries office following the Kyra Wine incident.

The worker isn’t expected to return.

[snip]

A St. Maries fire fundraiser last week raised $5,500 toward health care needs for Kyra and her sister Amanda.

Another fundraiser is set for the St. Maries Elks this weekend.

Well the article tried to excuse the behavior of the H&W agency and the Board could find no "fault" but whatever..... at least someone is getting fired, no matter what they say publicly.

Thanks Idaho for the update.

And bless all those fundraisers. I'm sending prayers that they make a lot of money.

I agree about the article, Salem. They tried to play it off as not being connected, but whatever.

My dad was at the fundraiser this past weekend. He said that there was so many people there it was unbelieveable. It was a spaghetti feed that started at 5:00. He said that when he first arrived at about 5:15, it was already full with no place to sit. There was so many people that he waited in line at least 45-60 mintues before he even got food. By the time he left, the line was still just as long as it was when he first got there. That is one thing about St. Maries. There may be a lot of crap that goes on, but when someone needs help, people step up big time. I'll get a number on the amount raised as soon as I can. :)

Thank you very much Idaho4Groenes. It is wonderful and so helpful to have a WS member right there on the "scene" as they say.

I appreicate your updates. This case is too important to fade away until justice is served.
