The Chicago Police Department confirmed in a statement that a member of the hit Fox show was involved in a “racially-charged assault and battery.”

Jussie Smollett's Friend Who Was with Him After Apparent Hate Crime Says It Was a 'Scary Night'

“Two unknown offenders approached him and gained his attention by yelling out racial and homophobic slurs towards him,” the statement continued. “The offenders began to batter the victim with their hands about the face and poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim. At some point during the incident, one of the offenders wrapped a rope around the victim’s neck. The offenders fled the scene.”

Which story? I believe it was the producer of Empire who posted a picture of Jussie in the hospital if you mean how this first made the news.

I think you're right. And then it was deleted I believe?

I think it just took off from there.

He deleted it? Why would he do that?

What a complete travesty! To take your hatred to that extreme is just beyond the pale. Seriously. And likely to make others suffer the consequences of his foolish and ridiculously stupid act.

I'm going to be very curious about this so-called 'scheduling' conflict Jussie claims to be having, which is preventing him from going to LE. It would be very strange if Empire didn't want to get to the bottom of a hate crime/terrorism issue, especially with Empire itself being where the terrorist letter was sent. People get time off from work for jury duty, but somehow now Jussie can't get time off to help solve a terrorist/hate crime Empire itself is the victim of? Jussie may be making it up, but Empire had better make it very clear that they're not doing anything to delay him from speaking to LE.

And today is President's Day. I would assume even Hollywood has the day off even though most of them say "Not My President......"

Mr. Smollett was very vocal about his alleged attack, a few days before his concert in California, which sold out, after his attack, to show support.

If Mr. Smollett wants to get this cleared up, I would think, the sooner the better. Definitely before the Grand Jury next week.

The media is being very careful about not calling this for what it is, a hate crime hoax. Meant to create social problems.

What if the weather had been better? And this was Summer? Could this have been enough to tip into riots? I was in LA during Rodney King trial, and OJ, it was a very scary time. I had to drive to LAX every day for work, often at 4am.

Fortunately, people have more sense, even his own "village" was skeptical. But this type of baiting could have easily lead to societal violence. It is time to make this type of false hate crime setup a federal crime. With mandatory prison sentences.

I am a longtime lover of Websleuths, a new member, and a person of color who doubted the story from the beginning. I kept quiet about this, because in the civil society many people claim to want, I try to listen to people who claim they have been victimized, and I wait until sufficient evidence comes in to say otherwise. To me, civility means that I might voice my doubts, but I don't mock someone until there is clear evidence that they aren't a victim. I allow for the outlandish, because for years on this forum, I have seen stories of the outlandish happen to victims. I don't automatically assume that a group of people will riot, or that there is a conspiracy. I watch, I wait, and I keep my counsel until I know more.

Mr. Smollett deserves all of the censure and punishment that will come his way. Unless he directly incites others to commit real hate crimes, he is not responsible for actual hate crimes against others. Moreover, as reasonable beings, it is up to us to take future hate crime allegations on their merits, and not use this man's narcissism and lies as an excuse not to believe others right off the bat.

My opinion only. Thanks for all the good that has come out of Websleuths, and I look forward to being a more active part of diversifying and strengthening this community.

He clearly appears to have pulled it now, but I saw it on his Twitter page and I feel pretty sure someone has copy-pasted it on a thread here, where he basically said that he thinks anyone who supports Donald Trump is a Ku Klux Klan member.

While I'm perfectly willing to admit that Hollywood probably thinks this is the case; it's by no means so and I think it reaches the threshold of "hate speech".

Thanks, I must have skimmed over that and I take it back, JS did not remove it.

In the meantime, the Empire producers are doubling down on their support of JS... while very carefully saying nothing about the brother who was likewise their employee... I think this will come back to bite them.

Jussie Smollett Gets Renewed Support From ‘Empire’ Showrunner Over Attack

From link.

“He remains a core player on this very successful series and we continue to stand behind him,” the Fox units added on Valentine’s Day. Now, with the exception of Mahoney, the wide spread outrage over the assault on Smollett has been replaced by silence in recent days as the focus of the case has shifted.

That is not smart. I think in this case "even bad publicity is better than no publicity" does NOT apply. With this move I think they are putting the livelihood of hundreds of people on the line (i.e. actors, crew, etc.). This show will not last.

Robin Roberts says cops felt Jussie Smollett was credible at time of interview

“When I sat down with Jussie it was Tuesday night in Chicago, at the time to give his first account, publicly give his first account of what he said happened,” Roberts said. “At that time, on Tuesday, police officers were saying that his account was consistent, it was credible, and that he was being cooperative. This was all before the interview aired on Thursday, and then we found out about the brothers.”

Robin Roberts says cops felt Jussie Smollett was credible at time of interview

Media Research Center analyst Kristine Marsh noted that Roberts “did not refer to the attack as ‘alleged’ even once” and instead treated him “as if he were a martyr, with fawning questions.”

“Roberts came to Smollett’s defense, at one point, telling her fellow anchors that his story was ‘credible,’” Marsh wrote.

“Roberts gave Smollett a soft platform to spin his tall tale less than 24 hours before it was blown to pieces,” NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck wrote. “They wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt.”

Have a lot of his fellow actors from the series rallied around him?
