Charles Barkley on Jussie Smollett charges being dropped: 'I think that we all lose'

I THINK WE ALL LOSE...

On Inside the NBA, he declared — with his co-hosts on TNT laughing after he said it — “Do not commit crimes with checks. If you’re going to break the law, do not write a check … get cash, man!”

But while appearing on The Late Show Wednesday night, Barkley was a lot more serious when Stephen Colbert asked him about his feelings on Smollett’s charges being dropped.

Here’s what Barkley had to say to Colbert:

“I think that we all lose. I think my black friends, my gay black friends, I think they lose, because there’s all repercussions when you’re a minority. there’s always a double standard. You have to understand that and accept that. For every black, gay person out there, we lost. And it’s unfortunate. I don’t know that kid, I wish him nothing but the best.

“But you have to understand, you have to always look at the big picture. Like, you know, there’s a lot of gay kids out there who are struggling. They’re getting beat up, they’re getting bullied, and things like that. And that’s not good. And then you see there’s this tenuous relationship between the black community and the cops, and we made the cops look really bad in this scenario. And there’s probably going to be some resentment. So the bottom line is everybody lost in this scenario. It’s not good.”

This, to me, is damaging on so many levels. For people who truly are victims of hate crimes, hoaxes like this decrease the chances of them reporting and/or being believed. Secondly, this truly proves how incredibly unfair our justice system is. Money is King. Thirdly, the fact that "some" people are in essence saying that it's because of the hostile climate in this country that this hoax was perpetrated at all - I call BS. I live in the South and grew up here. I don't care one iota what color you are, or who you are attracted to, or how much money you have. I care about one thing and one thing only - are you a decent, kind person or not?

I am not so naive that I believe racism or homophobia doesn't exist. I just believe that most people are more like me. Cases like this make my blood boil.

Dueling rallies over Kim Foxx’s handling of Jussie Smollett case expected in Chicago

Rev. Jesse Jackson, clergy, elected officials, attorneys and community activists are scheduled to hold one rally at the Chicago Temple on Monday to back Foxx, who received intense backlash from the public -- and from law enforcement officers -- after it was announced charges against Smollett for allegedly staging a racist and homophobic attack would be dropped.

The Fraternal Order of Police in Chicago is also expected to hold a protest outside of Foxx’s office on Monday.

Jussie Smollett update: What's inside the CPD investigative file?

When detectives showed one of the brothers a photograph of an El Yucateco hot sauce bottle recovered near the scene of the incident, he confirmed that it "indeed was the bottle he filled with bleach and poured on" Smollett. Both brothers also told police that "they had absolutely nothing to do with" the threatening letter Smollett previously received on the set of Empire.

Pretty poor that the NY Post found a key piece of evidence when so many LE officers were assigned to the case.

The Post's account of finding it is pretty interesting

"The Post’s discovery of a hot sauce bottle that reeked of bleach at the scene of Jussie Smollett’s alleged hate-crime hoax turned out to be a key piece of evidence, a police report revealed Wednesday.

Chicago cops initially pooh-poohed the finding on Feb. 7 — nine days after the “Empire” star claimed he was attacked by Trump-loving bigots who splashed him with the cleaning fluid.

“Are you trying to do our job?” sneered one detective when reporter Gabrielle Fonrouge alerted police that she’d found the bottle.

She wasn’t, but, as it turns out, she had.

One of the two brothers who said they were paid by Smollett to stage the attack “was shown a large photograph taken of the El Yucateco Hot Sauce bottle,” according to police reports released Wednesday under the Freedom of Information Act to outlets including CWBChicago.

The alleged co-conspirator “stated that indeed was the bottle he filled with bleach and poured on Smollett,” the paperwork revealed.

Neither brother has been criminally charged.

Wednesday’s revelation came despite initial skepticism of the reporter’s detective work.

“It’s highly unlikely that they missed anything that night,” one cop said at the time.

“They already took everything from the scene.”

Fonrouge was asked: “Did you sniff all these bottles? What made you think this one?”

“What else did you find? Should we process all these cigarette butts?” said a detective — who later groused while waiting for a crime-scene technician to arrive, “There goes my dinner plans.”

The Chicago Police Department confirmed on Wednesday that the brothers who staged the attack admitted they used that bottle.

“Those details were given during the interrogation when the brothers confessed to being accomplices in this hoax,” spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told The Post.

The spokesman also said the department takes the detective’s dismissive attitude toward the key piece of evidence “very seriously.”"

That's the site that the Fraternal Order of Police had planned to protest at. It appears the Foxx supporters converged upon the other group.
Not surprising.

Interesting. They are supporting Foxx, not Smollett.

Lovely post, thank you. I believe you spoke for a great many of us, I know you did for me. But, I need to ask this 'cause I've given this much thought - what would YOU suggest?

I've thought a lot more about your question since you asked me, Trident.

I think the only way healing can ever begin is for strong women or men who are our leaders, who has the courage to step forward, and offer an olive branch, and the other side also extends an olive branch in return, also wanting peace, stability, and unity to return.

Those who have the moral courage to put their own personal or political agendas aside, who knows what is the right thing that must done for all of Americans so we can become a unified nation again.

They have been a large part of this grave problem who has thrown our country into chaos, and turmoil for many...many ..years now.

They must be a part of the solution to repair the damage they have caused..

Also the media needs to become ethical journalists again, when vetted facts always mattered, instead of leading the charge with totally unvetted false narratives, time after time, with disastrous results.

Imo

It's only a fantasy now, but just think of how glorious it would be to see all of our elected officials working in tandem, and harmony, always in the best interest of all of us as a united nation of over 300M citizens.

With all of us having equal individual worth. No more identifying individual human beings as a group as if all such people in any certain group are exactly the same.

Returning to justice for ALL really meaning something we once prided ourselves to be true.

Returning to Lady Justice really being blindfolded for the valid legal reason it was always intended to convey in our country, and for all of the world to see.

Returning to the days when America prided itself as being the best, and fairest justice system in the world.

Returning to the country we once were when known worldwide as the most compassionate, caring, and charitable people, who were always willing to give a helping hand to those in need, here at home or whomever needed us.

Returning to the country who has had so many heroes in it who were/are selflessly willing to lawdown their very own lives for others, even in many other countries, where they have fought, and died so millions could also have freedom.

We have so many good, and postive uplifting things to be proud of ....including being the most productive hardworking citizens, and inventing things that not only help our country, but the world.

We have done so many amazing postive things, and we are still a young country ,yet long have been the world's leader.

Along the way we have righted terrible wrong decisions, always striving to become better.

Yet we hear none of this anymore. Constant negative spews have buried it.

Now people of entire races are being shamed because God made them of a certain race or put in some mythical box, and judged to be all exactly the same.

We have lost our individuality. How in the heck did we let this happen?

Now we paint with a huge wide brushes based solely on who they are as a group/category or even by their profession. WTH???

We are seeing a form of individual identity theft of all individual Americans taking place right before our eyes.

Its heart shattering how so much has drastically changed ,when we have always been a country based on protecting each one's individual rights for each of us.

We need to return to the days of unity, and being very proud of our country.

Jmo and nothing more.
