GUILTY IL - Anita 'Jeanie' Kustok, 58, shot to death, Orland Park, 29 Sept 2010

I got into that one too. Here it is:

October 2, 2010

BY MICHAEL SNEED Sun-Times Columnist

Sneed is told Orland Park businessman Allan Kustok, 59, who was charged with the murder of his wife, Anita, reportedly led a shadow sex life.

• To wit: Police are investigating reports that Kustok had a five-year affair with another woman and might have used an Internet site for married people interested in having sex with others.

Police are investigating whether Allan Kustok, who is charged with killing his wife, had a five-year relationship with another woman.

• The Kustoks' children, Zak and Sarah, an anchor for Comcast SportsNet, were apparently unaware of any infidelity.

• The .357 magnum used to kill Anita Kustok, whose dead body, wrapped in bedsheets, was taken by Kustok to Palos Community Hospital shortly after she was killed early Wednesday morning, was reportedly purchased at Chuck's Gun Shop in Riverdale.

• Blood evidence: Kustok, a medical supplies salesman, was wearing medical scrubs when he showed up with his wife's body at the hospital. Contrary to Kustok's claim that his wife shot herself with a gun he had given her as an anniversary gift, sources tell Sneed there was no blood spatter indicating such a scenario.

"The blood pattern definitely indicates Mrs. Kustok was killed while she was lying in bed," the source said. "There was also no gunshot residue on her hands."

That says it all.

Wow. This guy sounds like a Grade A <mod snip>. I agree, we are going to find out all kinds of bad stuff.

Wow, is all I can say to the mortgages! Yikes.

I have a feeling more stuff is going to come out. He seemed to be living a life for appearances with no way to really support that lifestyle. I wonder what kinda debt they had in addition to mortgage debt.

I also wonder if the kids knew he had been a janitor at Cook County Jail from 2004 -2007. Maybe he put on a suit and tie everyday, went to work and no none was the wiser.

I think a whole lot more may come out in addition to today's news.

from the Sun-Times article (plus here is a different link to the same article from a different source, if anyone is having trouble with the original link):

In 2003, he became sales manager for Commander Packaging Co. in Monee for an annual $100,000 base salary. Four months in, he was let go. He sued his employer for breach of a five-year contract, saying it owed him more than $600,000.

A jury awarded him $1 million in 2006. He and the company settled for a little less.

From the timing, it sounds like he took the Cook county job after he was fired from Commander Packaging and was pursuing his legal action against them.

This is the period that they also borrowed more against their home.

The couple had taken out mortgage after mortgage on the spacious house with two fireplaces in the 10900 block of Royal Oaks Lane. They started with $538,000 in 2001. Then $650,000 in 2003. Then $664,000 in 2006, borrowing against the property's rising value.

The settlement should have helped them out considerably though.

I would think that this would have been a really tough time emotionally for Allan (2003 - 2006) and Anita and, not surprisingly, it was during this time that he allegedly began his affair. Getting fired from a job can be very hard on the male ego (and the female ego as well). I can see him trying to hide the resulting financial pressures from as many people as possible by maintaining the 'lifestyle', including, quite possibly hiding it from his children. Don't get me wrong....I am not defending his apparent actions in any way!! I'm just saying the time period appears to tell a story.

Do we have any idea why he lost his job in 2003?

Ah hah ---no GSR. What I said yesderday was as an obligatory right handed person I couldn't direct the gun in such a way as to get the bullet out the right side of my neck. The only angle I could get was to have the bullet coming out to the left side of the midline of my neck. You have to be above and on the left of the person to get the bullet to come out that way . In other words she was ASLEEP AND HE FIRED THE BULLET INTO HER LEFT CHEEK AND AT A SOMEWHAT DOWNWARD ANGLE FOR THE BULLET TO EXIT WHERE IT DID. I am so much stronger in my dominant hand I don't know if I could pull a trigger with my left hand. And if there was any recoil I'd probably shoot out ceiling light and miss myself completely. I know some people are more ambidexterous but I couldn't do it. LE will be able to analyze blood splatter and the MR can get a really accurate picture via the bullets path to determine the trajectory very accurately.

It's possible a jury could have reasonable doubt, EXCEPT the circumstantial evidence will do him in, imho. IF she had shot herself, he wouldn't have waited 90 minutes to take her to the hospital. He would have called 911. No, he waited so long because he was trying to clean her up and the house too and trying to THINK up a story.

I imagine the children are in shock. They may WANT to believe their dad and are telling everyone he didn't do it, but I DOUBT they really believe that.

This doesn't look good for the husband.

It's too sad. Such a wonderful family, all down the tubes because of one selfish individual. :(

Agree totally.

There is a OP fire station 1.2 miles from his house at
153rd and Wolf Road. I mapped it. Time: 3 minutes

It's 4.9 miles to Palos Community Hospital. 11 minutes.

I would imagine an ambulance might exceed the speed limit. A lay person can't.

That and the girlfriend does him in.

I believe there will be a defense expert that will opine it to be "possible" for her to lift the gun over her face and fire. Although the way he stated her hands/arms were positioned is a little odd (arms crossed over chest with gun in right hand). I've never handled a gun but if she indeed shot herself, one would think her arms would fall and the gun would fall out of her hand.
So he took the gun from her hand and fired the shots into the curio?

IMO he didn't think that one through.

But O'Brien agreed to prosecutors' request for a bail of $2 million. At a later news conference, Assistant State's Attorney Peter Troy explained why he didn't believe Kustok's story.

"I found it striking that, according to him, she was lying on her back with her arms crossed and a weapon of significant power and weight was still in her right hand," he said.

"I believe any reasonable person would find it unreasonable to wait an hour and a half before you take your loving spouse to the hospital with a gun shot wound to the head," he added.

Asked about a motive, Troy would only say that authorities are investigating "all of the circumstances regarding the domestic situation between the defendant and his late wife."

Do we have any idea why he lost his job in 2003?

No, not that I know about. The fact that he was asked to leave 'four months in' though would indicate he did not perform. But after only four months? Apparently he sued the company and won the lawsuit so :waitasec: who knows.

I read earlier in the thread (can't find it now) where someone posted that they bought their house in 2001 for $160,000. I thought there is no way one could buy a house like that in 2001 for that amount of money. I ran across this link showing where the $160,000 came from http://chicago.blockshopper.com/sales/cities/orland_park/2001/Feb

This must have been money they borrowed against their mortgage back then when home values skyrocketed. If so, they may have had money struggles for many, many years. But when you win a lawsuit to the tune of $800,000. I wonder why that doesn't fix things. :waitasec:

Oh I see some of the suntimes links I posted aren't working - they work for me but my information bar comes up so maybe it has to do with security systems. Thanks to those who covered for me.

So they received close to $900,000 in 06, just 4 years ago. That would easily cover their $650,000 mortgage completely....if they wanted to go that route. Plus, both of them were working and their children are grown. So I'm trying to figure how money issues would play a big part. Of course, sometimes lots of money is a bigger trouble-maker than no money. And then there was that reported "affair."

It's interesting that Zak finished his college football career on top of the world in 2001.

Shortly thereafter, everything began falling apart for his father financially.
Could it be that he was banking on his son making it big in football?
Could it be that AK was counting on his son to make it big and when that didn't happen everything began to fall apart?
Maybe it was the joy the children brought to the home through their accomplishments that held the family together for so many years.

Apparently Zak transferred to Northwestern from Nodre Dame.
The article says that he sued the NCAA to play football sooner as there was a rule that he'd have to sit out the first seven games of the season.
Very possible that the father was banking on the son to make it big in the NFL. Also interesting that they sued the NCAA. I wonder how many other entities he sued in addition to the previous employer.
