According to the book My Life Among the Serial Killers, Macek stated that he was out driving around when he had to go to the bathroom. He stopped and went into the cornfield. That's when he saw Sally walking her bike; he started talking to her then attacked her. Not all that dissimilar from what occured with Debbie.

The author, Helen Morrison, doesn't appear to have a website. I'm trying to contact her, as she spent several hundred hours interviewing Macek and should know his timeline better than anyone living.

http://www.nwherald.com/blogs/entries/2010/02/24/40397286/index.xml here is the article about the historian. I was able to get into through the 'back door', so to speak. Since he thinks that Macek is still in prison (he in fact hanged himself in 1987) I'm not sure how accurate the rest of his info would be.

Thanks. That wasn't much of an article... and I think you are right, if he thinks Macek is still in prison when he died more than 20 years ago, it doesn't sound like he did much research into Macek.

Something Cubby said earlier on is really becoming more and more evident, the more we look into Debbie's murder. ALL activity (or at least the reporting thereof) apparently stopped when LS was released. Usually, and those of you who spend a lot of time reading archived articles about crime know this, the news reports will mention previous cases in the area---Especially unsolved cases. However, I can't find any articles on Sally's murder that also mention Debbie's...Even though they only took place 6 years and a couple of miles apart.

I noticed that too. The more I think about it, outside of the recent article in the 2000's which Jeff Zimmerman wrote with the Daily Herald and IIRC maybe one with Rachel Mellon.... I'd have to go back and look.. and I might be recalling that with something else... Jeannine Nicarico (sp?) and Debbie's name being mentioned....

Maybe the media was all too well aware of the libel/slander suit so they no longer included Debbies unsolved murder in the media? I can't think of another reason her case would not be mentioned. But that would make sense with regards to LS, not necessarily exploring other avenues of Debbies case. :waitasec:- me too!

I found another article I personally hadn't seen before... Big letters on the front page of the Feb 14th Chicago Tribune trumpet "CHARGE COACH SLEW DEBBIE report solution of 2 child killings". However, the only article available details the arrest of the previously mentioned Russel Dewey, who had been apprehended in California on Feb 13th for the murder of 11 year old Susan Brady in December. I can't access the article about Debbie and LS. Grrrr.

I hope this works..

ETA: It did. It shows the 8 related stories tied to the one you couldn't access. I think the headlines were combined regarding both cases, because the arrests occured at the same time. Not because either case had anything to do with the other outside of the timing.

I'm still exhausted so hope I am making sense. Need coffee!

Since we have all been complaining about these darn pay to view Chicago Tribune articles I just have to add. Let's not forget this is the same company that owned the Chicago Cubs for a long time (and just recently sold the baseball team.)

A giant :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: from me for both these ( GRRR )
Pay to view articles AND the Chicago Cubs! lol..... had to! ;)

My memory was correct:

Here is the snippet to yet - another :banghead: pay to view - article mentioning Debbie.

Long, sad goodbye to Rachel Marie
$4.95 - Daily Herald - ECNext - Jan 29, 2006
The case of Rachel Mellon is in some ways sadly similar to that of Jeanine Nicarico of Naperville and Debbie Fijan of unincorporated DuPage County. ...
All 2 related - Related web pages

I'm now convinced Chicago just doesn't want anyone to know the news that goes on here! :banghead: Pay up, or it is our secret! GRRRR!

ETA: I think what the three had in common at the time the article was written is they were still all unsolved. Rachels case is still unsolved and she has never been found. Jeanine's case is complicated, but has since been solved and closed. Brian Dugan having been found guilty of her murder this last fall.

ETAA: though it is odd, that here we are discussing Debbies case and TWO cases in DuPage county, both Sally Kandel and Jeanine Nicarico involve men who were wrongly convicted and spend a lot of time in prison before they were freed.

I purchased the book My Life Among the Serial Killers by H Morrison, which details her conversations with Richard Macek. Not much new in the way of timeline, but I did find one interesting thing....Pictured below is the same year, style and color of car Macek was driving the night in 1972 when he killed Sally Kandel, not far from where Debbie was found in 1966:

1964 Chevy Impala, original cream color

Did the book by chance say that ROM's car was a 2 door and not a 4 door? Just curious. Just for the facts on the doors, not for any other reason....

Since no one actually buys newspapers anymore, I guess they had to figure a way to make money off the internet....

No, it doesn't. It just mentions that he had a '64 Chevy Impala, "beated up" on the right side and the door panels pushed in.

Sally's bike had a bent, crooked front wheel--I think it highly likely that Macek hit her with his car. I wonder if Debbie's injuries could have been caused in such a way..?

My dad still does... there is a whole generation out there who don't use the net for news. My sister is younger than me, born in the 70's and she still buys the paper for her sports. ;)

from what was posted it looks like Debbie walked up to and got into the car willingly. So she either knew her abductor, or someone convinced her to get into the car, help me find my dog.... or something...

It's possible she may have been hit when exiting the car.

I couldn't reach the detective and am having some problems with my voice mail right now and no caller id so sent off the following information regarding what we discovered regarding Richard Otto Macek.

Wanted to let you all know. Here is a copy of the email sent.

Hello Detective <Name>,

My name is XXXXX XXXXX, I left you a few messages and rather than play phone tag I am sending some information a small group of us discussing and researching Debbie Fijans cold case at websleuths.com have discovered. Her brother Jack found and joined our discussion at Websleuths as well, which led to his contacting you regarding his sisters case.

While going through old newspaper articles we came across information on the murder of Sally Kandel from Carol Stream. Sally was murdered near her home at Kuhn and Lies Rds on September 13 1972. Her body was found the following day on Lies Road.

The intial person convicted of her murder was later released when it was found the crime was commited by another man, Richard Otto Macek. Macek had a long criminal history starting in grade school and hung himself while in prison in 1987. He was approximately 18 when Debbie Fijan was murdered.

There are several similiarities between Debbie Fijans case and Sally Kandels case which follow:

-Sally was abducted around 5-6pm, similiar to the time Debbie was abducted.

-Sally was found on Lies Rd near Kuhn. Debbie was found on Lies approximately 2 miles west of the location Sally was found.

-When Sally was murdered in September 1972, Macek was driving a white 1964 Chevy Impala. Witnesses saw Debbie talking to a man in a white car shortly before she was abducted 6 years earlier.

-Macek reportedly slit Sally's eyelids. It was reported Debbie had stab wounds to her eyes.

-Macek was known to use a pen knife to stab/slit his victims eyelids and had done so to two other victims in addition to Sally. It was reported a pen knife was likely the murder weapon in Debbie's case.

Some additional history regarding Macek, found in a book written by a forensic psychiatrist who interviewed him for hundreds of hours before his death and other old newspaper articles:

-Macek had began getting in trouble for either stealing or attempting to steal girls panties while still in grade school. He had also been in trouble for using a telescope or something similiar to view into girls/womens bedrooms and/or homes.

-His larger troubles began when his father died in 1966. (we've been unable to locate a date in 1966 when his father died).

-About the time of Sally's murder it was reported Macek had done 3 years in the Joliet penitentiary for the 1968 stabbing of an Elmwood Park woman.

-Maceks victims ranged from age three through adulthood.

While much of the information regarding Debbies case discusses Loren F. Schofield as the primary suspect, there are too many similiarities between Debbie's case and Sally's case to not have further compared and investigated the two and the possibility Macek murdered Debbie.

Research into Sally's case included media articles comparing her case to other similiar crimes and crime victims in the area. None of those media articles ever mentioned Debbie's unsolved case being compared to or having been compared to Sally's case letting us know Macek may have been looked at and ruled out as Debbies murderer. Unsure if these two cases were compared, I wanted to make sure you had this information.

If Macek was ever ruled out as Debbies murderer could you please let myself, or Debbies brother Jack know of such?

We are praying for Justice for Debbie and her family, along with praying for those of you currently re-investigating her case to find the whatever evidence is needed to finally solve this cold case after all these years.

Thank you very much for your time.

Excellent job with the email, XXXX XXXXXX. (I think I'll stick with Cubby though. :p )

The book continues to reinforce the point that Macek's "rampage" began after the death of his father, in 1966. I don't think the author is referring to his peeping into womens' homes.....

IIRC the first article you linked regarding Macek included some information and mentioned more minor things started in grade school..... or his troubles started in grade school. With a birth year of 47 or 48 Macek would have been in grade school in the 50's.

We never found a month and date Maceks father died did we? We should still try and find that...... Debbies murder occured early in 1966. If Maceks father passed later in 66 that might mean there are just coincidences in the cases, or the dates researched regarding Macek were a bit off because Debbies murder was never taken into consideration during the research.

Also, if Maceks father had a lengthy illness the troubles could have began at the onset of his illness rather than his death.

just thinking outloud.
