Seven hospitals running out of lifesaving fuel as “shameful” level of aid reaches Gaza

Breadcrumb

21 October 2023

As 20 aid trucks crossed the Rafah border this morning, seven hospitals across Gaza are at breaking point as incubators and life support machines have run out of fuel entirely.

[…]

This morning’s news comes as Al-Quds Hospital, one of the biggest in Gaza has been issued with evacuation orders from the Israeli government. The Palestinian Red Crescent has said that the hospital, as with dozens of others across Gaza, is serving 400 patients and sheltering around 12,000 people displaced by the violence

“Given the loss of life and destruction of Al-Ahli hospital the other night, it’s unconscionable that over 20 hospitals across Gaza are facing evacuation orders – a complete violation of International Humanitarian Law.”

“The failure to deliver aid is costing lives by the minute and by the hour. With 2.2 million Gazans facing a humanitarian crisis we're urgently calling for a ceasefire and for the opening of humanitarian corridors. And while the focus has been on the Rafah border crossing, we are imploring the Israeli authorities to allow aid to flow through the Kerem Shalom checkpoint and other crossings from Israel. Only then can aid flow freely into Gaza and keep hospitals running."

"She was instrumental in the founding of the Muslim-Jewish Forum of Detroit — a grassroots collective of young adults of both faiths who gather in partnership to learn, celebrate and build community together,' the glowing profile read.

She was praised for helping 'to build and deepen important relationships' between local Jewish and Muslim communities, where she hosted 'revolutionary events, including an Interfaith Iftar dinner welcoming Syrian refugees.'

'By extending her hand and creating space for connection between Muslims and Jews, she has exemplified the values of healing the world'."

RIP :(

She sounds like a wonderful, compassionate, peaceful young woman. May she RIP. ❤️

Indeed

Anyway, I don't believe a word he says in any case. They're going to release all the hostages?

'Senior Qatari official Majed Al-Ansari says he is optimistic that all hostages held by Hamas will be released soon,'

sounds like a CYA for Qatar because they shelter & fund Hamas ( among others)

I am not sure that Qatar are the bad guys ... I think they are more like the "Switzerland" of the ME.

Remember that they were asked by the US to set up a communications channel with Hamas (back in 2012). The US did not want Hamas setting up their base in Iran or Lebanon for fear that no-one neutral (or otherwise) would then be able to communicate with Hamas.

Ismail Haniyeh (self exiled Hamas leader) may live in Qatar, but the US also has its largest ME military base in Qatar.

Airlifts from angels: Jews in America mobilize to equip Israel’s soldiers

DIASPORA AFFAIRS: As Israel called up more than 360,000 reservists, it seemed like half of them were sending requests to Americans for supplies - both tactical and practical.

In my sister’s neighborhood in New Jersey, two days after the attack on Israel they had a place set up for donations to the IDF. My sister and many others bought all kinds of supplies, enough to fill six truckloads, and those were driven to Newark Airport where an airlift was waiting to bring everything to Israel.

I have not bought supplies, but I have donated to several groups that assist the IDF and victims of terrorism.

What I have researched, because I desperately want to do it, is how to donate blood to those victims in the hospital.

I have a blood type that only 3% of Jewish people have, (it jeopardized my pregnancy), and I so want to donate it if it matches anyone there, but I haven’t found a way to get it delivered intact from New York.

Fortunately the blood banks in Israel were overwhelmed with people donating blood, but I know that my blood is needed by the 3% for whom I am a match.

BBM. Am I the only one who finds the words from the Israel PC to be a tad too authoritarian from a human rights perspective?

I didn't realize Arab citizens of Israel do not enjoy Freedom of Speech/Expression and are being arrested and detained for it. I think this could pose a problem in terms of how much $$$$ taxpayers in the U.S. are going to be willing to spend on military support for Israel's war that it claims is against Hamas but the words from the PC seem to give police the power to unfairly profile--and detain-- Palestinians.

Freedom of speech in the USA does not apply to the world. There are laws in every country regarding freedom of speech. In Canada, people can say what they want as long as they respect the autonomy of others. For example, anyone who promotes the false idea that the Holocaust did not happen is prosecuted for hate speech. In the USA, people like that are not arrested. It's important to understand the law in other countries before suggesting that people in other countries do not enjoy freedom of speech. They do, but it has to be respectful.

Can you use this?

We had three people arrested for doing the Nazi salute outside the Sydney Jewish museum.
But 15,000 people were allowed to peacefully rally in Sydney yesterday, in support of Palestinians. Jewish people are rallying here also.

Hate speech (and actions) are not allowed. Free non-hate speech is allowed.

I don't know what their laws are there.

Canada has "Free Speech" too, but it's caveated. Hate speech (such as holocaust denial) or harassing speech can be charged as in Germany and many places in Europe etc.

I do believe that "Anti-Semetic harassment/speech" is illegal in Israel. I don't consider that to be "patriotic" or else, but rather as "don't be anti-semetic".

According to her lawyer, Abeer Baker, she was accused of "disruptive behaviour" by police officers, who said her posts could incite violence among her followers.

The post that attracted police attention was an image of the Palestinian flag with the Arabic motto: "There is no victor but God."

Ms Baker says the singer, who is well known across the Arab world for her songs about Palestinian heritage, was expressing a religious sentiment. Israeli authorities interpreted the singer's post as a call to arms for Palestinians.

Israel now has zero tolerance speech. I think she was arrested because she is influential. It wasn't anti-Semitic. It was pro-Palestinian. Maybe Israel does not allow any dissent from non-Israelis?

It doesn't sound like it was Nazi type stuff or hate speech.

Her post was on Facebook, so I linked her FB here. She said it has been removed.

Amid the rubble in Gaza City, agony and personal loss

ISRAEL-GAZA BORDER — Throughout the day, missile strikes have been launched from Gaza into central and southern Israel, and there have also been airstrikes and artillery bombardments inside Gaza.

In Gaza City, an area near the Al Shatea refugee camp was hit. At least one home that was struck had people inside it.

After hearing the blast, one woman arrived at the scene as rescuers were combing through debris, searching for survivors. She then walked two miles to a hospital, where she discovered nine of her family members had been killed in the blast.

The woman's mother, father, brother, sister-in-law and were among those killed.

<snipped for focus>

I don't have a problem with Israel having to curtail certain rights during wartime if they determine that they could be fanning the flames of violence in a region where this could easily happen, and likely is happening. We don't know all the details, only what the singer's attorney is saying to the media, which is only his side of the story/situation.

The language accompanying the flag maybe could have been interpreted by some as referring to holy war or jihad. Hard to say. Authorities are dealing with an explosive realty in that region of the country.

During wartime, I think patriotic types will get behind the leaders of their country. Here in the U.S., although many don't support the current administration, they have acknowledged the hard work of Biden and Blinken and mostly get behind them.

This isn't the time for fanning the flames about people boo-ing their leaders who are doing everything they can to save the country.

Hey, she wasn't arrested..LOL

What a shame that they did not evacuate, as they were asked, during the last week or two.

UK PM wants a stream of aid trucks into Gaza

Helen Catt
Political correspondent

In his latest comments, Rishi Sunak added that he made this week's trip to the Middle East to show the UK stood "in solidarity" with the region "against terrorism".

The PM said he wanted to talk "face-to-face" with other leaders because it was "more important than ever to accelerate diplomatic efforts".

And in a Sunday Telegraph article, he calls for all water supplies to be restored to Gaza wherever it is physically possible.

He welcomes the reopening of the Rafah crossing to allow aid to enter and calls for a "stream of trucks" to come rolling through.

Sunak also says the government is "working intensively with international partners" to allow trapped British nationals to use it to leave Gaza.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has told the Sunday Times the government will only call British nationals forward when it's "confident there would be a long enough period for them to credibly, safely leave Gaza", and it's "not yet in that position."

Israel says it will step up its airstrikes on Gaza. Here's what else you should know

From CNN staff

The Israel Defense Forces chief of staff, Herzi Halevi, told IDF commanders Saturday that the military is readying an operation to enter Gaza and take out Hamas.

“We’ll enter the Gaza Strip. We’ll embark on an operational and professional task to destroy Hamas operatives and infrastructures,” the chief said in comments to the Golani Brigade of the IDF. He did not provide a specific timeframe.

Meanwhile, the IDF will increase airstrikes on Gaza, IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said Saturday. “We will increase our strikes, minimize the risk to our troops in the next stages of the war, and we will intensify the strikes, starting from today," Hagari told reporters during a briefing in Tel Aviv.

Airstrikes have killed at least 4,385 people in Gaza since Hamas launched its October 7 attack on Israel, according to the health ministry in Gaza.

Here are other headlines you should know:

Absolutely. I think realizing a leader is doing the best he can with what he was dealt is the best we can hope for. IF we did or didn't vote for them, if they do or don't create policies you agree with, if they are on your side of the aisle or not. It's not the time to voice crazy theories or ideas publicly to create more hate/chaos.

I really doubt it. Muslims often talk like that. It's very common.

Even Palestinian Christians talk like that on FB.
I'm friends with one and there is a lot of "God talk"..Lots of "Amen" responses to FB posts.

Israeli airstrikes hit Hezbollah targets in Lebanon as six militants killed

Israel has said its aircraft struck Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Saturday and that one of its soldiers was hit by an anti-tank missile, in cross-border fighting that the Iran-backed group said killed six of its fighters.

Reuters reports that with the frontier region seeing its worst violence in years as Israel wages war against Hamas, the Israeli military said it traded fire with Hezbollah in at least four different areas along the Lebanese border.

The hostilities have forced residents on both sides to flee their homes.

A security source in Lebanon said one Hezbollah fighter was killed in the Lebanese area of Hula, opposite the Israeli community of Margaliot, which Israel said was the target of an anti-tank missile attack. The Israeli army said it fired back.

Hezbollah, which claimed attacks on Israeli military positions throughout Saturday, later said five other members were killed.

Israel said its soldiers struck a cell attempting to launch anti-tank missiles towards the area of Shlomi, an Israeli town about 70km (44 miles) from Margaliot.

An Israeli soldier was severely injured after being hit by an anti-tank missile near the Israeli town of Bar’am, the military said. Two other soldiers were lightly injured in the incident, it added, without saying if they were also hit by the missile.

Hezbollah and Israel’s military have been trading fire at the frontier almost daily since Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel on 7 October and Israel retaliated with fierce air strikes on Gaza.

Israel’s military says seven soldiers have been killed since Hamas’s raid. Hezbollah says 19 of its fighters have died, including the six on Saturday. The violence has also killed civilians and journalists, including one with Reuters.

Western leaders look to Qatar to get their citizens home

The Gulf state’s role in the release of two American hostages by Hamas has burnished its reputation as a global mediator

As news broke that two Americans held hostage in Gaza had been released by Hamas after talks brokered by Qatar, telephones started ringing in Doha.

France’s Emmanuel Macron, and the UK’s Rishi Sunak were among the world leaders waiting at the end of the line, officially to congratulate the tiny Gulf state on its successful negotiations, but mostly to ask for help getting their own citizens home.

[…]

“Mediation and conflict resolution is an essential part of our foreign policy, so sizeable number of personnel are actively engaged on this part of the file,” a Qatari official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

[…]

Qatar has now mediated in disputes involving a long and growing list of countries beyond Gaza and Afghanistan, from Yemen, Lebanon and Syria, to Sudan, Chad, and Eritrea.

Most recently it has brokered talks between Russia and Ukraine, securing the return of several Ukrainian children.

What efforts in the territories are not being supported? All we know is that Hamas terrorists under the Gaza Hamas government enjoy torturing and brutalizing babies before setting them on fire.

"Imad Harb, the director of research and analysis at Arab Center Washington DC, says Palestinians should be allowed to hold democratic elections in Palestinian territories to form a 'truly independent government.' He says Hamas is not 'a true representative' of the Palestinian people and criticized the Israeli and U.S. governments for not supporting efforts in the territories."
